Sir John Gresham, Kt., of Titsey, co. Surrey. Born at Holt, Norf. Was of the Fishmongers'=2. Katherine, d. of. Company. Admitted a Mercer 1517. Purchased the Manor of Titsey 5 May 1535. Sheriff of London 1537. Knighted 1537. Lord Mayor of London 1547, when he revived the pageant of the "Marching Watch" on Midsummer Eve. Founded the Grammar School at Holt 1546. Lent £40,000 to the Crown in 1546. One of the Commissioners under Bishop Bonner for persecution upon the six articles. Died of fever at his house in Bassinghawe, London, 23 Oct.; buried in the Church of St. Michael, Bassishaw, 25 Oct. 1556. Mon. to him there destroyed in the Fire of London. For account of his funeral, see Stowe's 'Survey,' ed. 1720, book i., pp. 258-9. Wills dated 12 Feb. 1552 and 18 Sept. 1554, proved in the P.C.C. 26 Nov. 1556. (28, Kitchen.) 2. Sir William Gresham, Kt. (heir male of his cousin Sir Thomas Gresham, Kt.). A Student in Gray's Inn. Admitted at St. Alban's Hall, Oxford, circ. 1575. Knighted at Whitehall 23 July 1603. Lived sometime at Intwood, Norf. Held a Court as Lord of that Manor 1591. Lived at Croydon, Surrey, where he died "A foole 8 May 1624, æt. 69. Buried at Titsey 11 May 1624. Admon. P.C.C. and never borne to doe himself any good." (Ex relatione Robti Gunsley, Rectoris de Titsey.-Coke's Entries, p. 35, No. 28.) Squandered all his large landed estates, including Fountains Abbey.

* The Parish Register of Croydon gives her burial Nov. 12. It is clearly an error for Dec. 12, the previous entry being Nov. 19. The inscription on her monument at Croydon gave her death on 9 Dec.
