Item I give and bequeath vnto the said Margarett my wife the lease of the howse or Tenement wherein I nowe dwell called or knowne by the name of the Cocke togeather with all the ffurniture implementes of howshold plate money beddinge lynen woollen and other moueables whatsoeuer of in or belonginge to the same togeather wth the lease of all those howeses and Tenementes neere or adioyninge to the said Cocke scituate lyeinge and beinge in Turneagaine lane or in the Court comonly called or knowne by the name of the Cocke court, all wch said howses and Tenementes are comprehended and comprised in one Lease thereof to me made. Item I give and bequeath more unto my said wife all those leases of howses tenementes or rentes of or in right belonginge vnto me by vertue of the ffree guift legacy and bequest of the aforesaid Thomas Charles conteyned and specified in his said last will and Testament, all wch said howses tenementes and rentes are scituate and dispersed in divers places, To this end and purpose that shee the said Margarett shall therewth paye and discharge my funerall and all such other guiftes legacyes and bequests as in and by this my last will and testament or conteyned given and bequeathed. Item I give and bequeath vnto my sonne Richard Gresham the som'e of thirtie poundes of lawfull money of England to be paid vnto him wthin one yeare next after my decease, And if it shall happen the said Richard to dye and depart this life before he shall receive the said som'e of xxxli soe given unto him as aforesaid, that then my mynde and will is that Tenn poundes thereof shalbee and remayne vnto Elizabeth Gresham my said daughter his sister and the other Twenty poundes to returne vnto the vse benifitt and behoofe of my Executrix herevnder named. Item I give and bequeath vnto my said daughter Elizabeth the som'e of Tenn ponndes of like lawfull money of England to be also paid vnto her wthin one yeare next after my decease. Item I give and bequeath vnto my yongest daughter Margaret the som'e of an hundred poundes of lawfull money of England to be paid vnto her on the day of her marriage (yf in case shee shall happen to marrie before her said age of xxj yeares by and with the expresse good will and consent of her Mother) or otherwise not till her said age of xxj yeares. Item I give and bequeath vnto the poore people of the parish of St Sepulcher's without Newgate London the som'e of five poundes of lawfull money of England to be distributed and to be deliu'ed into the handes and custody of the Churchwardens and Overseers for the poore of the said parish for the tyme beinge by my executrix hereafter named, and by them to bee bestowed amongst such as they in their discrec'ons shall see to haue most need thereof. Item I give vnto my foresaid sonne Richard my seale ringe with the grasse hopper. Item I give and bequeath vnto my loveinge brother John Gresham my other gold ring wth the Emperors head cutt in stone. Item I give and bequeath vnto my lovinge freindes & kinsmen Paul Gresham and James Gresham Tenn shillinges apeece to make each of them a ringe to weare for and in remembrance of my loue towards them. Item I give and bequeath vnto Edward Baylye my daughter Elizabethes husband my workingday Cloake lyned with Tawney Bayes and my blacke grogram suite. Item I give and bequeath vnto Thomas Ruteledge my servant the som'e of Twenty shillinges to be paid vnto him at the discretion of my Executrix. Item I give and bequeath vnto Rose Overbury the som'e of fforty shillinges to be paid vnto her wthin one yeare after my decease. The rest residue and remaynder of all and singuler my goodes chattells and debtes whatsoever and wheresoever due or owinge vnto me, my funerall solemnely p'formed and my legacyes and bequestes herein and hereby given and bequeathed as aforesaid first paid and discharged I do whollie give and bequeath unto the said Margarett my welbeloued wife whom I doe make constitute and ordeyne the sole and onely executrix of this my last will and testament willinge and requiringe her faithfullie to performe the same as my trust is she will. And Overseers of the same I doe nominate and appoint my trusty and welbeloued Brother John Gresham and my kinde freinde Mr Thomas Stevenson to whom I doe give for and in considerac'on of their care and paynes to be had and taken herein Twenty shillinges a peece. Patent Roll, 30 Henry VIII., part 2, No. 44.

Licence to the Abbot of Hyde, co. Southt., to alienate to Sir John Gresham the manors of Saundersted and Langhurst, co. Surrey, which in the whole do not exceed the clear yearly value of £25. To have and to hold to the said Sir John, his heirs and assigns, for ever. To hold of the Abbot and Convent and their successors by service of one red rose at the Nativity of St. John the Baptist yearly, and an annual rent of 43s. to the Crown in the name of a tythe of the premisses at Michaelmas. Grant by the King to Sir John Gresham, Knight, of the City of London and to Mary his wife, and the heirs and assigns of the said John Gresham, in consideration of the sum of £1007 13s. 4d., of the manors of Lymesfeld and Brodham, with every their appurtenances in the said county of Surrey, to the late Monastery of St. Martin of Battle, co. Sussex, now dissolved, belonging and appertaining. And the advowson of the Rectory and parish church of Lymesfeld. Also one yearly pension of 2s., which the Rector of the Church of Lymesfeld for the time being ought to render and pay to the said late Monastery, and all messuages, lands, tenements, rents, reversions, services, Courts Leet, Views of Frank pledge, fairs, markets, etc., in Lymesfeld, Brodham, and Oxstede which to the said late Monastery belonged and appertained. To have and to hold to the said Sir John Gresham and Mary and the heirs and assigns of the said John Gresham for ever. To hold of the King in capite by the 20th part of one knight's fee, and by the yearly rent of £5 12s. to the Court of Augmentations at the feast of Michaelmas yearly. [T. Patent Roll, 31 Henry VIII., part 5.

Grant to Sir John Gresham, Knight, his heirs, executors, or administrators, in consideration of the sum of £789, of all that messuage called Metewayes, and all lands, meadows, feedings, and pastures, with the appurts. to the said messuage belonging, lying and being in Lingfeld, co. Surrey; also one messuage and all those lands, meadows, and pastures called Kyrwell and Bryglande, with the appurts., scituate, lying, and being in Lingfelde, co. Surrey, late belonging to the monastery of Hide, co. Southt. The King also grants the manors of Saunderstede and Felcourte, and the borough of Langhurste, with their members and appurtenances, which to the said late monastery also belonged, and the advowson, gift, free disposition, and right of patronage to the Rectory, Vicarage, and parish church of Saunderstede. And also all messuages, lands, tenements, meadows, feedings, pastures, woods, underwoods, warrens, wastes, commons, waters, rents, reversions, services, fee farms, rents of tenants and farmers for term of life or years and rents demised, knight's fees, escheats, relief, Courts Leet, View of Frank Plege, chattels, waifs, estrayes, and all other liberties, franchises, possessions, and hereditaments scituate, lying, and being in the borough, towns, fields, parishes, and hamlets of Langehurst, Saunderstede, Lyngfelde, and Felcourte, co. Surr., in as ample manner as the said late monastery held them. Also the King grants all the manor or farm of Lovestede, with the appurts. in co. Surr. and Kent, to the late priory of Merton, now dissolved, formerly belonging, and all lands etc. to the same manor or farm belonging. Also all those lands, meadows, and pastures called Marton lands in Tanridge, to the said priory belonging, and all that the yearly rent of 13s. 4d. and service which William Hardyng and his heirs ought to pay for the lands in Chelsham. Also the yearly rent of 10s. 1d. and service which John Gaynesforde, knight, and his heirs ought to pay for his manor in Crowherst, and which he holds of the Crown.

To have and to hold the aforesaid manors etc. and all and singular the premisses above expressed to the said John Gresham, his heirs and assigns for ever. To hold by service of the 20th part of one knight's fee. And yielding yearly for the same manors of Saunderstede and Felcourte and the borough of Langhurste and other the premisses etc. 69s. 24d. And for the said messuages etc. called Metewayes, Kyrwell, and Bryglande 5s. And for the manor etc. of Lovestede, Chelsham etc. 13s. 6d. [T. R. apud Westm. 4th November by the King.]

Grant by the King to his loving servant John Gresham of London, Knight, and in consideration of the sum of £1441 19s. 7d. to be paid to the treasurer of the Court of Augmentation, all

those the Manors of Westerham and Edenbrigge, with every their members and appurts. in the co. of Kent, to the late monastery of St. Peter's, Westminster, now dissolved, formerly belonging. Also all messuages, lands, tenements, mills, tofts, cottages, meadows, feedings, pastures, woods, underwoods, waters, fishings, commons, furze, heath, marshes, wastes, moors, rents, reversions, services, rents upon whatsoever demises or grants reserved, knight's fees, escheats, reliefs, and other rights, commodities, and hereditaments whatsoever, with the appurts., in the towns, fields, parishes, and hamlets of Westerham and Edenbrugge and elsewhere to the said manors belonging. Also markets, Courts Leet, View of Frank Pledge, free warrens, assize and assay of bread, wine, and ale, chattells, waifs, estrays, and all other rights, profits, commodities, and emoluments whatsoever. Also all those the rectories and churches of Westerham and Edenbrigge, with every their rights, members, and appurts, and all messuages, glebe lands, tithes, oblations, etc., to the same belonging, to the monastery or priory of Christ Church, Canterbury, lately belonging. To have, hold, and enjoy all the above premisses to the aforesaid John Gresham, his heirs and assigns. To hold of the King in capite by service of the 20th part of one knight's fee, rendering annually £9 6s. 9d. into the Court of Augmentation. [Witness the King at Westm. 16th August.]

Licence to Nicholas Hare, Knight, to alienate the manor of Southreppes, co. Norfolk, and lands, etc.. in Southreppes, Northreppes, Crowmer, Thorp, and Systrond, co. Norf., to John Gresham, Knt., Thomas Gresham, clerk, William Hardyng, mercer, and Thomas Rowe, merchant tailor, London, their heirs and assigns for ever. [T. R. apud Westm. xv die Februarij.]

Patent Roll, 35 Henry VIII., part 14, m. 9, No. 27.

Grant to Sir John Gresham, Knight, and Sir John Williams, Knight, in consideration of the sum of £647 4s. 2d. paid to the Treasurer of the Court of Augmentations, of all the manor of Henden alias Hethenden, with the appurts. etc. in co. Kent, late parcel of the possessions of William Stafforde, Esq. and Mary his wife, the daughter and heir of Thomas, late Earl of Wilts. And all the park of Henden, and all lands, meadows, feedings, pastures, woods, and hereditaments known as Hendon Parke, containing by estimation 300 acres, lying and being in the parishes of Sundrysse, Chedyngstone, and Brasted in co. Kent, and all those lands, etc. called Farbye lands, lying in the parish of Brasted. Also all messuages, etc. lying in Sundrysse, Chedyngstone, and Brasted, together with Courts Leet, View of Frank Pledge, rents, etc. Except all advowsons of churches, etc. Which said manor, park, etc. extends to the clear yearly value of £24 7s. Old.

Licence to Edward North. Knight, and Alice his wife to alienate the Manor of Maighfeld alias Mayfeld alias Maughfeld, and 200 messuages, 4000 acres of land, 200 acres of meadow, 2000 acres of pasture, 1000 acres of wood, 2000 acres of furze and heath, and £30 rent, with the appurts. in Mayfeld, ffrankeham, Wadehurste, and Lamberherst, together with the rectories of Mayfeld and Wadherst, and the advowson of the vicarages of the churches of Mayfeld and Wadehurst, which are held of the Crown in capite, to John Gresham, Knight, and William Hardyng. Also patent 1st Sept. 30 Hen. VIII. of the manors of Lymesfeld and Brodham; also patent 18th June, 36 H. VIII., manor of Warlingham.

Grant to Sir John Gresham, in consideration of the sum of £427 7s. 6d., of the annual rents of 69s. 24d. and of 5s. and of 13s. 6d. by the letters patent of 4 Nov. 31 Hen. VIII., and the rent of £9 6s. 9d. by patent 16 Aug. 32 H. VIII., and the rent of £5 12s. by patent 1st Sept. 30 H. VIII., and the rent of 40s. 101d. by patent of 18th June, 36 H. VIII. Patent Roll, 37 Henry VIII., part 1, m. 11, No. 33.

Grant in consideration of the sum of £408 18s. 10d. to Richard Gresham and John Gresham of London knights and William Gresham Citizen and mercer of London of all lands meadows feedings pastures woods underwoods rents services and hereditaments called Rowholte with the appurts. now or late in the tenure of the said John Gresham knight scituate lying and being in the parish of Chelsham co. Surrey to the late Monastery of Shene now dissolved formerly belonging. Also the messuage tenement and farm called Westbarnes with the appurts. in all five hundred and seventy-six acres and a half lying and being in the parish of Marten to the late monastery of Marten belonging; also all tithes of sheaves grain and hay; also all those woods there containing 20 acres in the parish of Marten. Also all that messuage called Welcombes and Laurence lying in Whatyngdon to the late Monastery of Chertsey belonging. And also a croft and half a virgate of land called Stacye's, etc., in Whatyngdon formerly belonging to Thos. Bassett and to the late Monastery of Chertsey and now parcel of the honor of Hampton Court. Also all woods underwoods and trees, etc., on the above premisses growing and belonging also all rents and yearly profits whatsoever reserved, etc. Also grants that the said Richard John and William have the premisses as freely and fully as the last Prior of Shene; the last Prior of Marton, and the last Abbot of Chertsey respectively held the same. The possessions in Chelsham extend to the clear yearly value of 26s. 8d.; in Westbarnes to £18 10s. and in Whatyngdon 50s. 1d. To have, etc., to them and the heirs and assigns of the said John Gresham for ever to the use and behoof of the said Richard John and William and the heirs and assigns of the said John for ever. To hold, etc., Westbarnes Welcombes and Laurences and other the premisses in Marton and Whatyngdon in capite by service of the 40th part of one knight's fee. Rendering yearly for Westbarnes, etc., 39s. 8d.; for Welcombes and Laurences and other the premisses in Whatyngdon 5s. 1d. into the Court of Augmentations. [T. Grant to John Gresham, Knight and Alderman of London, and others, in consideration of the sum of £1,276 0s. 10d. of divers premisses in Barbican, Swanne Alley, Golden Lane, Bichlane, Redcross St., Whitecross St.. Grub St., and Moor Lane in the parish of St. Giles Cripplegate. All which premisses extend to the clear yearly value of £91 2s. 11d. To hold, etc., in free burgage of the City of London, and not in capite. [Leiges, 12th April.]

Grant to Sir John Gresham, Sir Rowland Hill, and Geo. Barons, Citizen and Alderman of London, and Wm. Blakwell, gent., common clerk of the City, in consideration of the sum of £1,461 2s. 6d., of 5 closes of land, containing 27 acres next Gallowe feld being in Lambeth, co. Surr. to the late Hospital of Thomas Becket in Southwark late belonging; one croft of land and meadow called Jewes meade containing 1 acre in Camberwell, And all lands, etc.. lying in Wymbledon and Mitcham; 26 acres in St. George feld, Southwark; an annual rent of 13s. 4d. issuing from a teuement in Blackman St.; an annual rent of 18d. issuing from lands and tenements in Penge to the late Hospital formerly belonging. Also an annual rent of 24s. in Dunsford, co. Surr., an annual rent of 40s. issuing from the manor of Chilworth, co. Surr. Also the Rectory of Great Wakeryng, co. Grant to Sir Richard Gresham of London, in consideration of the sum of £11,137 11s. 8d., of the scite of the late Monastery of ffontibz alias ffountaunce, co. York, and all the church, belfry, and cemetery of the same late Monastery, and all gardens, orchards, lands, meadows, woods, and underwoods, etc., containing by estimation 12 acres, lying as well within as without the scite aforesaid, two watermills for grain under one roof, a house called the Barkhouse, and a mill called the Bark Mill; a messuage within the scite of the Monastery, and all and every the walls about the premisses, all which premisses are scituate within ffountaunce and Rypon, or in the parishes of the same. Also ffountaunce Parke and all houses, etc., to the same belonging. Also the scite and capital messuage of the manor of Brymbam, and all the park of Brymbam, and all houses to the same belonging, and all the houses and lands to Brymbam Grange belonging, and divers lands in the parishes of Massam and Kyrkeby Malsherd, co. York, to the said monastery lately belonging. Also all the Grange called Morker Grange with the appurts. in the parish of Ripon, and all houses, buildings, gardens, and orchards to the said grange adjoining or in any wise belonging in the parish of Ripon. Also all the grange called Haddocke Stone Grange, and all houses, barnes, dovecotes, orchards, gardens, etc., to the same adjoining or in anywise belonging. And also all the grange called Swanley Grange, and all messuages, houses, buildings, lands, woods, commons, etc., in the parish of Rypon and elsewhere to the said grange belonging. Also the granges called Sykes Grange, Burthwayte Grange, Calfall House Grange, the messuage and tenement called Westholmehous in Massam, Estholme house, Sykesfurth alias Sixefurth Grange, and all houses to the same belonging, Hashaye Grange in Rypon, Baker Grange, and all houses in the parish of Rypon, and in and upon the moors called Grene Hoe Mores from Craven Crosse to Craven Kelde. And also the messuage or tenement called ffelbeck house, and pasture, etc., to 35 "lez Stottes" in winter time and to 4 oxen all times of the year in the lands called Brymben More to be yearly depastured. The grange called Warshall Grange. Also all the scite and capital messuage of the manor of Balderbye in the parish of Topcliff, and all the lands adjacent, lands in Beverley, and all that pasture of sheep upon Beverley Rigges, and upon the Moors at Northcote in Craven in the hands of the late Abbot at the time of the dissolution of the said late Monastery, divers houses and tenements in Arneclyffe, and rents to the amount of 17s. 10d. The water mill called Scothorpe Mili, the water mill for grain, and all the fullers mill in Kylnesey, and all the water course running the same mills. The Lordships and Manors of Brymbam, Beverley, Aldburgh, Malham, Lytton, Kylnesey, Merkynton, and Bordeley alias Bordeley Barony, and all messages, lands, etc., demised as well by Indenture as by copies of Court Rolls, Knights' fees, escheats, etc. The King further grants to the said Richard Gresham all the house and scite of the late Monastery or Priory of Swyne. And all the church, belfry, and cemetery of the same and all houses and lands thereto belonging in the parish of Swyne in Holderness, also pasture and feeding to 60 cattle yearly in the common pastures of Swyne, and for 24 cattle yearly in the common pastures of West Carre, Drypole, Wolburghe, and Launthorpe Granges, feeding for 500 sheep, and all other animals and cattle without number in Somergranges in the parish of Swyne. The house and scite of the late priory of Nunekeling, and the church, belfry, and cemetery of the same priory, and one windmill in Nunekelynge. To have hold and enjoy the aforesaid manors, granges, and all other the premisses above expressed to the said Richard Gresham his heirs and assigns for ever, to hold of the King in capite by the 20th part of one knight's fee, rendering yearly for the scite of the Monastery of ffountaunce £5 5s., for Brymbam Grange £1 10s., for all the other granges and lands in the whole the yearly rent of £40 16s. 6d. to be paid at the Feast of St. Michael at the Court of Augmentations. The King grants to the aforesaid Richard Gresham all the issues, rents, etc., of all the manors, lands, etc., from the Feast of the Annunciation last past to have to the said Richard Gresham without account. Witness the King at Westminster. [This grant extends to 7623 acres of land.]
