M" Meech the Widow of Captain Thomas Meech dec'd who was lately employed to cruise within this Province to prevent & discover illegal traders appearing at the Board produces a Letter of the 16th of 8ber 1697 writt to her by M' Philip Clark of St Marys County wherein he gives her an acco' that her late husband had spent above four hundred pounds in that Employment besides his loss of time

And desiring to have satisfaction therefore she is told that her husband undertook that service upon a Certain Agreement which he made with his Excellency the Gov' & which said Agreement is entred upon the Council Book to which she is referred

Ordered that the Clk of this Board shew Mrs Meech the said agreement upon the Council Book to morrow morning

George Layfield Esq' late Collector of the District of Pocomoke makes oath to an acco' of the 1a ph aris on Tobacco in Potomack district from the 18th of 7ber 1696 to the 6th of Iuly 1696

The Petition of Mr William Sharp of Talbott County read praying that two Actions now depending before his Excellency the Governor & the Council upon appeals & writts of Errors might be continued till the Assembly being read is granted

George Plater Esq' delivers for his Excleys use upon the Acco' of the 3d for Arms two sets of Bills of Exchange one drawn by Mr William Sharp on Sir John Duddleston of Bristol for 50ł Sterl thus endorsed memd the within Bill for the 1' 3d p hhd 3d p Tun & Coll fees the duty on tobacco to be paid according to the Quantity of Tobacco entred that year at the custom house in Bristol Ship Iohn & Susannah Wm Iones Commander

Agreed that his Majestys Justices of the Provincial Court do advise among themselves to adjourn the Court whether to the first or second tuesday in November next & that notice be given thereof & that no other Court will be held until the spring

Read what was advised on Sunday last in relation to M' Gerard Sly

Then read his narrative & a Letter written to him by M' Samuel Watkins of Patuxent

Advised that upon the said Slys acknowledging his Offence in open court as well against the Gov' as Gov' & asking Captain Hills pardon for his abuse & reflections that his Excellency be graciously pleased to remit his Imprisonment

Further advised that the Fine imposed by the Court on Captain Sly be appropriated to pay those persons that laboured to support the Govt & had great trouble given them for their better Encouragement

Read the Condition of the Bond proposed Mr Sly should give for his good Behaviour & advised that the sum he & his Security are bound in be five hundred pounds Sterl Iointly & severally it being Conceived to be better then a greater sum which if forfeited will Scarce be recovered

Advised Mr Sly make Oath to his narrative in Open Court p. 152 Mr John Coods rough Draught of Articles of Charge against his Excellency produced & read

Mr Gerard Sly being brought before the Board & Submitting himself to his Excellency altogether humbly begging pardon & promising better behaviour for the future

His Excellency tells him that he has rec'd his petition & Narrative which he is willing to believe
