The Commissioners above named receive three hundred dollars per annum for their expenses in visiting and superintending the Park.

Pilot Commission.

Office, No. 69 South street.

In consequence of the repeal by the Legislature of the State of New York, in 1845, of all laws regulating pilots and pilotage for the port of New York, by the way of Sandy Hook, the Chamber of Commerce and Board of Underwriters organized a Board, consisting of five members; of whom

2 were appointed by the Chamber of Commerce;

2 were appointed by the Board of Underwriters; and

1 was appointed by the Navy Department.

In 1853, the Legislature passed the present law, legalizing the action of the above bodies, and creating a Board of five Commissioners

3 to be appointed by the Chamber of Commerce; and

2 to be appointed by the Board of Underwriters.

PILOTAGE.

FEES FOR INWARD PILOTAGE.-For every vessel drawing less than fourteen feet of water, per foot, three dollars and seventy-five cents; fourteen feet and less than eighteen feet, four dollars and fifty cents; eighteen feet and less than twenty-one feet, five dollars and fifty cents; twenty-one feet and upward, six dollars and fifty cents per foot; for every armed vessel, seven dollars and fifty cents. If boarded out of sight of Sandy Hook lighthouse, one-fourth of the above rates are added. From November 1 to April 1, four dollars are added to the full pilotage of every vessel.

FOR OUTWARD PILOTAGE.-For every vessel drawing less than fourteen feet of water, per foot, two dollars and seventy cents; fourteen feet and less than eighteen feet, three dollars and ten cents; eighteen feet and less than twenty-one feet, four dollars and ten cents; twenty-one feet and upward, four dollars and seventy-five cents per foot; for every day's detention, three dollars.

FOR TRANSPORTATION FROM NORTH TO EAST RIVER AND VICE VERSA.-A seventy-five-gun ship, twenty dollars; a frigate, fifteen dollars; a sloopof-war, ten dollars; and all merchant vessels, five dollars.

From Quarantine, one-quarter of the inward pilotage, exclusive of the off shore. Hauling into the river from the wharf, three dollars. Pilot boats holding commissions from this Board are numbered and designated by a square burgee, with white center and blue border, the number being in the center.

NEW JERSEY PILOTS.

Office, No. 104 South street.

The rates of pilotage are the same as those under Board of Pilot Commissioners above.

HELLGATE PILOTS.

Office, No. 23 Coenties slip.

FEES. From or to Sands' Point, for schooners or sloops, per foot, two dollars; for square-rigged vessels, two dollars and fifty cents. From or to Hellgate, for schooners or sloops, one dollar and twenty-five cents; squarerigged vessels, one dollar and seventy-five cents. Steamers, barks, and ships, two dollars to two dollars and fifty cents. From November 1 to April 1, in addition to the above, for every ship, bark, or brig, three dollars; for every schooner or sloop, two dollars.

SOUND PILOTS.

The office of the Sound Pilots is located at No. 89 South street, where information connected with the navigation of Long Island Sound can be obtained.

Harbor Masters.

Office, No. 74 Wall street.

There are eleven Harbor Masters, who have, for the better accommodation of the public, divided the port of New York into eleven Districts, viz. : First District-J. M. Thompson, 270 South street. District extends from Pier 42 up East river.

Second District-II. N. Sherwood, 168 South street. District extends from Pier 27 to 41, East river.

Third District - Butler G. Noble. District extends from Pier 19 to 27, East river.

Fourth District-N. P. Pond. District extends from Pier to 19, East

river.

Fifth District-James W. Husted, 26 Coenties slip. District extends from Pier 13 to 19, East river.

Sixth District-W. Smelt. District extends from Whitehall to Pier 8, East river.

Seventh District-J. Cashon, 46 West street. District extends from Battery to Pier 9, North river.

Eighth District Isaac W. Swan. District extends from Pier 9 to 28, North river.

Ninth District-L. N. Paine. District extends from Pier 28 to 36, North river.

Tenth District-J. C. Adams. District extends from Pier 36 up North river.

Eleventh District (Brooklyn)—–J. E. Watson, Atlantic Dock. District extends from Red Hook Point to extent of port.

In case of the sickness or absence from the city of any of the Harbor Masters, either of them will attend to his district.
