GENTLEMEN:-In presenting this the sixth annual report of this department covering its transactions for the crop year ending August 31st, 1891, it is gratifying to note the evidences of continued growth in the productiveness of the Northwest, and the constantly increasing volume of business in grain handling at the terminal markets of this state.

Statistical information showing in detail the work of the department for the past crop year, also its earnings and expenditures, will be found in the different tables which are listed below:

EXHIBITS.

Exhibits "A" and "B" present the financial condition of the department, showing the sources of its income and the object of its expenditures.

Exhibit "C" shows the total number of cars of spring wheat inspected on arrival" during the year, at the three terminal points, St. Paul, Minneapolis and Duluth, arranged by months and roads.

Exhibit "D" shows the number of cars of spring wheat inspected on arrival" at the three terminal points, for the same time, arranged by months and grades.

Exhibit "E" is a statement of the number of cars of wheat inspected each month "out of store" at St. Paul and Minneapolis, also the amount in carloads and bushels "out of store" at Duluth.

Exhibit "F" shows the number of carloads of coarse grains, including winter wheat inspected "on arrival" at St. Paul, Minneapolis and Duluth, for the season.

Exhibit "G" is a statement of the amount of coarse grains, including winter wheat and flax seed inspected "out of store" at the three terminal points, for the season.

Exhibit "K" is a comparative statement showing the amount of each kind of grain inspected on arrival at Minneapolis, St. Paul and Duluth, during the crop year ending August 31 1891. Exhibit "L" shows the inspection of spring wheat in car loads on arrival at Minneapolis and Duluth for the crop year ending August 31, 1891, by roads, giving the grades and percentages of the same. THE YEAR'S WORK.

The number of car loads of spring wheat inspected "on arrival" for the crop year was 112,930; winter wheat 4,211 cars; coarse grain, including flax 15,532 cars, being a total of 132,673 carloads as against 130,654 carloads last season. There were inspected "out of store" during the same period 41,661 cars spring wheat; 2,354 cars winter wheat and 6,749 cars coarse grain, or a total of 50,764 carloads against 36,467 carloads last season. The total number of carloads "into" and "out of", store for the crop year just closed was 183,437, as against 167,638 cars the preceding year, indicating a gain of 15,799 cars. There was also inspected "out of store" into vessels, 14,022,207 bushels of spring wheat, 785,224 bushels winter wheat, 1,673,499 bushels of coarse grain, and 119,372 bushels flax seed, a total of 16,600,302 bushels of all kinds of grain as against 20,992,668 bushels the previous year, a falling off of 4,392,366 bushels in cargo shipments.

For the purpose of farther comparison with the business of previous years, I append a table which exhibits in a concise form the business transacted each year by the department from its organization up to the present time.
