STATE OF MINNESOTA, OFFICE OF STATE WEIGHMASTER, DULUTH, SEPT. 1, 1891. To the Honorable Board of Railroad amd Warehouse Commissioners of Minnesota : GENTLEMEN:-I have the honer to submit herewith a report of the business transacted by the State Weighing Department at Duluth during the crop year ending August 31, 1891. The business done here the past year shows a slight falling off from that of the preceding season. This is largely due to a short crop of the coarse grain, most of which found a local market, and consequently a small quantity reached this port for export. This, together with a large milling demand in the middle western states, caused large shipments to be made to Minneapolis that would have come here had these localities. produced wheat enough to supply this market. In the face of the above facts this port has done a good business, and the weighing department has, to the satisfaction of all concerned, weighed over 33,000 cars in and shipped out 17,000,000 bushels. 66 Elevators D," "E," "H," "Imperial," Duluth Roller Mill, Duluth Elevator Company and Great Northern "A" are the houses at which the state has had weighers assigned for duty. The men, I am pleased to say, are old and well tried and fully competent to perform the work required of them. With the approval of your honorable board a weigher was placed in the Duluth Roller Mill. In consequence this department has been increased one man. The weighman was placed in this mill with the understanding that should the fees from cars weighed not pay expenses the mill management would make good the difference. This they cheerfully agreed to. That they can give state weights has proven very satisfactory to them and their patrons, as most of their wheat is received. direct from the country. The following table shows the shipments and number of cars weighed in and out, by months, also receipts and expenses. Respectfully submitted, E. MCMANUS, State Weighmaster |
