PROCEEDINGS

OF

THE SEMI-ANNUAL MEETING,

OCT. 8, 1884.

THE Semi-Annual Meeting of the Society was held at the Boston University School of Medicine, on the above date.

The meeting was called to order at 10.40 A.M. by the President, J. Heber Smith, M.D., Boston.

The records of the Annual Meeting, and of the meetings of the Executive Committee, were read and approved.

NEW MEMBERS.

By recommendation of the Board of Censors, and with the approval of the Executive Committee, the following physicians were elected to membership:

George A. Tower, M.D., Watertown; and R. W. Southgate, M.D., Rockland.

Dr. Louisa B. Atwood of Watertown failed of election.

This committee tendered their report through the Recording Secretary, who, in the absence of the author, read the following paper (VI.).

Zymotic Diseases. By E. H. Packer, M.D., Lowell.

COMMITTEE ON PHARMACY.

REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE ON SURGERY.

This committee presented the following papers (VII.):

Stone in the Bladder; Extirpation of the Testicle; Spina Bifida. By James Utley, M.D., Newton.

Hernia (Cases). By J. K. Warren, M.D., Worcester.

Extreme Prolapsus Uteri. By Horace Packard, M.D., Boston.

A Case of Necrosis of the Anterior Segment of the Fourth Cervical Vertebra. - Recovery. By F. C. Richardson, M.D., East Boston.

DISCUSSION. Dr. Richardson's patient was present for examination.

Dr. Warren, Worcester, spoke of the Heatonian method of treating hernia, injecting into the sac the fluid extract of quercus alba mixed with the solid extract. This produced irritation and thickening of the membrane. He has performed the operation only, a few times, but with success.

Dr. Walker, Chelsea, mentioned one case in which he had known this method to be successful.

Dr. Talbot, Boston, had used it in eight cases.

Dr. Lougee, Lawrence, speaks favorably of the method.

Dr. William Woods, Boston, is using the quercus alba externally in a case of congenital hernia in a child nine months old, and anticipates good results.

Dr. Phillips, Boston, as to prolapsus uteri, thinks that mere closure of the vaginal canal is not sufficient: superincumbent weight must be removed, as well as the weight of the uterus itself; this weight acts as a wedge.

Dr. Krebs, Boston, had a case of complete prolapsus of uterus of two years' standing. He replaced it, and kept it in position by a large ring pessary. He thinks closure of the vagina justifiable only when the woman is past middle life.

EXECUTIVE AND PUBLICATION COMMITTEES.

Dr. Harris, Boston, in accordance with a previous request read a paper, as follows:

The Duties of the Executive and Publication Committees. By J. T. Harris, M.D., Boston.

DELEGATES.
