PREFACE.

The Tenth Minnesota State Conference of Charities and Correction was held at Owatonna, November 19, 20 and 21, 1901, and in the absence of the President, James J. Dow, L. H. D., the Conference was called to order by Vice-President H. A. Tomlinson, M. D., who presided over the general sessions. The State Board of Control was represented by two of its members, and the Charitable and Reformatory institutions of the State were well represented by officials associated in their management.

The papers read at the Conference were replete with valuable information and suggestion, and the liberal allotment of time for discussion gave added zest and interest to the sessions, amply proving the increasing value of the Conference as a School of Instruction. Special sessions of the Conference were held at the State Public School at Owatonna, and at the Institute for Defectives, at Faribault. A delightful repast was served to the delegates and visitors by the management of the State Public School, and a similar courtesy added to the comfort and pleasure of the delegates and visitors during their visit to the Schools at Faribault.

A resolution was adopted instructing the officials of the Conference to seek the co-operation of the various county officials, township officials, and city officials, whose official duties bring them into relation with the subjects studied, to the end that all may be associated in wise and helpful methods of prevention and relief. Assurances were given on behalf of the State Board of Control that the same fostering care extended to the Conference by the preceding` State Board of Charities and Correction, would be continued under the auspices of the State Board of Control.

The next meeting of the Conference will be held in Rochester, November 1902, Hon. C. E. Faulkner, of Minneapolis, President, and Miss Anna Swanson, Secretary.
