FRÉDÉRIC SUSTRIS

Frédéric Sustris, named also Suster, or Zeustris, and to whom the first name of Lambert was improperly given, was born at Amsterdam, about the year 1540.

A pupil of Schwartz, and afterwards of Titien, this artist retired to Munich, where he performed a great many works. The year of his death is unknown.

GÉRARD TERBURGH.

Gérard Terburgh naquit en 1608 à Zwol et fut élève de son père. Ses tableaux se font remarquer par un fini des plus précieux. Il fut aussi très-recherché pour ses portraits, et il devint fort riche. Le comte de Pigranda, ambassadeur d'Espagne, l'emmena à Madrid, où il eut beaucoup de succès et fut créé chevalier; mais sa figure et son esprit l'ayant mis dans le cas d'exciter la jalousie de quelques personnes, il quitta l'Espagne, passa à Paris et à Londres, puis retourna en Hollande, où il s'établit à Deventer, dont par la suite il devint bourgmestre.

Terburgh n'a fait que de petits tableaux, tous d'une couleur brillante ses étoffes et particulièrement ses satins sont faits avec un talent extraordinaire, mais son dessin manque de correction.Le chef-d'œuvre de ce peintre est le tableau dans lequel il a représenté le serment prêté par les ministres plénipotentiaires de toutes les puissances de l'Europe, lors du traité de Munster.

Terburgh est mort à Deventer en 1681, âgé de 73 ans.

Gérard Terburgh, born in 1608, at Zwol, was his father's pupil; bis pictures were remarked for a most precious finishing. His portraits were also greatly esteemed, and he became very rich. The count de Pigranda, the Spanish Ambassador, carried him to Madrid, where he had great success, and was treated a knight; but his figure and wit having raised against him the jealousy of several persons, he left Spain, wentto Paris and London, and afterwards returned to Holland, where he settled at Deventer; in due time, he became burgomaster of

that town.

Terburgh has only made small pictures, all of a brilliant coloring his stuffs, and particularly his satins, are drawn with an extraordinary talent, but his drawing stands in need of correction. The master-piece of this painter is the picture in which he has represented the oath taken by the plenipotentiary ministers of all the European powers, at the treaty of

Munster.

Terburgh died at Deventer in 1681, aged 73.

ADRIEN VANDE VELDE.

Adrien Vande Velde naquit à Harlem en 1639. Dès son enfance et sans avoir eu de maître, il prenait du charbon et chargeait de figures d'hommes et d'animaux, toutes les murailles de la maison de son père. Placé dans l'école de Winants, il surpassa bientôt son maître, et devint l'émule de Paul Potter et de Du Jardin. A l'âge de quatorze ans, Vande Velde gravait déjà à l'eau-forte, des études d'animaux, pièces très-remarquables par la finesse et l'esprit de la pointe. Fort jcune encore, Vande Velde jouissait en Hollande d'une grande réputation, comme peintre de paysage et d'animaux. Il se fit aussi connaître comme peintre d'histoire, en exécutant une descente de croix, pour l'église catholique d'Amsterdam.

Les tableaux de Vande Velde sont d'une couleur excellente; sa touche est franche et pleine de finesse, ses figures sont spirituelles et bien dessinées. Ses chevaux, ses vaches, ses chèvres, ses moutons, sont d'une vérité parfaite; ses ciels brillans, ses arbres d'un feuillé délicat. Ses tableaux sont nombreux et d'un beau fini, ce qui prouve qu'il avait une grande facilité. Il mourut à 33 ans, dans l'année 1672.

ADRIEN VANDE VELDE.

Adrien Vande Velde was born at Harlem, in 1639. From his childhood, and without any master, with a piece of charcoal he covered all the walls of his father's house with figures of men and animals. Placed in the Academy of Winants, he soon excelled his master, and became the rival of Paul Potter and Du Jardin. At the age of fourteen, Vande Velde already etched some sketches of animals, very remarkable for the delicacy of their ingenious point. Yet very young, he enjoyed a great reputation in Holland, both for landscapes and animals. He also made himself be known as an historical painter, by executing the Descending of the Cross for a catholic church

at Amsterdam.

The pictures of Vande Velde are of an excellent coloring; his touch free and full of ingenuity, his figures are lively and well drawn. His horses, cows, goats and sheep, are perfectly true, his skies brilliant, the leaves of his trees of an extreme delicacy. His pictures are numerous and of a beautiful finish, which is the surest proof of his great facility. He died in 1672, being only 33 years old.
