PREFACE.

SUCH gross misrepresentations have gone abroad, relative to the conduct of the Presbytery of Glasgow, in what has been styled the Organ Cause, that regard for the honour of the Minister more immediately implicated in this affair, as well as justice to the character of the Brethren, demand that the erroneous opinions which have been so industriously eirculated, should be instantly repelled, and the facts and circumstances connected with this very singular business, fairly and impartially stated as they occurred.

Whether such misrepresentations ought to be ascribed to ignorance or ill nature, will be difficult to determine. The world, however, has been censorious enough to insinuate, that disappointed vanity, and misguided zeal, have had too great a share in giving them body, vigour, and popularity.

Had we lived in an age when men were uniformly actuated by a sacred regard to truth, and capable of discriminating always betwixt truth and falsehood, we would have thought it superfluous to have
