Peleg Redfield, fifth son of George (19), son of THEOPHILUS (8), entered into the Connecticut Line as a musician (fifer) in 1777, being then in his sixteenth year. His first campaign was made under Capt. Josiah Baldwin, his second (that of 1778) under Capt. Stanton of Salisbury, Conn. In 1779 he served under Capt. Granger of Suffield. From 1780 until March, 1782, he served under Capt. Lockwood, whose company formed part of Gen. Waterbury's brigade. He assisted in what defense was made to save New Haven from the marauding expedition under Tryon and Garth, in July, 1779, and saw the flames arising from the burning of East Haven. While under Capt. Lockwood's command, he was one of a detachment which was sent out in Jan., 1780,* with orders to cut off Delancy's dragoons and a band of tories under Col. Hatfield, who had their head quarters at Morrisania. Delancy and his dragoons were absent, but Col. Hatfield and eleven tories were taken, after a desperate resistance, with a large amount of booty. In 1781 his regiment lay at White Plains, in full view of the allied armies, and he saw them strike their tents for the purpose of joining Lafayette in the siege of Yorktown, while the brigade to which he belonged was ordered back to Connecticut to guard the coast from invasion and to watch the movements of the tories. In March, 1782, he enlisted to go to Fort Niagara, under a promise that every twenty men should receive a township of land in New York State, for three years' service. He remained at Salisbury until June of that year when he was discharged, the officer under whom he had enlisted having failed to procure a commission from the New York legislature. Peace was soon afterwards proclaimed, and he returned to Killingworth where he worked at his calling as shoemaker. He soon after removed to Suffield, Conn.,

*This expedition was sent off during that remarkable "cold term," which has rendered the winter of 1780 preeminent. The party were absent 36 hours, and in many places had to march through snow three feet in depth. Mr. R's foot was frozen on the march, and the effects remained with him to his death. Many other instances of privation, both as to food and rai. ment, are on record with his descendants, as related from his own lips, but can not be detailed here. They but add to the innumerable evidences which attest the sincerity of our fathers' faith in the "inalienable rights" of "all men."
