A number of g ntlemen and respectable farmers, have lately affociated themselves for the fole purpo of meliorating the breed of the est cattie of the county. The meeting is to be held annually, on every 19th day of April, when a filver cup, valued at fifteen guineas, will be adjudged to the owner, that fhall exhibit the beft 1HREE-YEAR OLD BULL; and another, valued at ten guineas, to the owner, that shall exhibit the best three-year old heifer, which fhall have dropt a calf between the 1ft day of the month of January, and the 1st day of April.

As fome workmen were lately digging in a field, at Frampton, they difcovered a nunnery concealed about two feet under the furface of the earth. DEVONSHIRE. Exeter, Nov. 18.-This day a very numerous meeting was held at the Caftle, of the Gentlemen and Freeholders, &c. of the county, to confider "the propriety of prefenting an Addrefs to his Majefty, to thank him for the fteps he has already taken to procure an honourable and lafting peace."-Mr. BULLER moved, that a claufe fhould be inferted, containing a repetition of affurances of lives and fortunes, in fupport of the war, fhould the prefent negotiation fail. Mr. NORTHMORE oppofed the adoption of this clause, and moved an adjournment to that day two months. The Hon. Mr. FELLOWES fubftituted as an amendment, instead of this day two months, "till the county be convinced of the Minister's fincerity in the prefent negotiation." At Plymouth, on the 2d inft. in the 34th year of his age, after a lingering illnefs, which he bore with exemplary fortitude and refignation, Mr. Moore, a furgeon or that place, and vifiting apothecary to the Royal Naval Hofpital.

His talents and virtues did honour to a name and family, which have been long characterifed, and are itill adorned, by learning and worth. He was diftinguifhed by much skill in the exercife of his profeffion, by rare powers of mind, and by extenfive reading; but his mental endowinents and literary accomplishments, were united with the more valuable properties of character, with independence of principle, with firmets and confiftency of conduct. By his family, by his neighbourhood, and by the wide circle of his friends, his death is deeply regretted, and the remembrance of him will be ever affectionately cherished.

On Monday morning, the 24th of October laft, at his houfe in Landvery, Carmarthenshire, of the gout, in the 69th year of his age, ARTHUR DAVIES, efq. father of Doctor Davies, of Carmarthen, and one of his Majesty's juftices of the peace for that county. A gentleman, whofe death is univerfally, and defervedly, lamented. The various duties, and offices of focial life, he discharged with great zeal and philanthropy.— As a magiftrate, he was eminently useful in his neighbourhood; active, impartial, and independent; and he defcended into the grave, covered with the highest honour, that of being efteemed, and acknowledged, an honest man!

Of Swansea, Richard Phillips, eiq. one of the people called Quakers, whofe hofpitality and benevolent mind will be long remembered. IRELAND.

The cultivation of hemp and the manufac ture of fail-cloth, have recently made a confi derable progrefs in this country.

The maritime intercourfe between this country and Great Britain (which, before the year 1720, was very inconfiderable) has, for a number of years paft, increafed with regular and progreffive rapidity to its prefent furprifing magnitude :-it now forms one of the mont confiderable branches of Irish and British commerce, and is favourable to the reciprocal interefts of both countries.

The gentlemen of property throughout the kingdom, are not only enrolling themfelves in the different volunteer corps, but have alfo spiritedly offered to raife, at their own expence, any number of then judged expedient by Government, in addition to the permanent military eftal li hments, &c.

SCOTLAND.

On Friday the 7th of October, in the 87th year of his age, Thomas Feid, D. D. profeffor of Moral Philofophy in the University of Glafgow. His ingenious and elaborate works, efpecially his " Inquiry into the Human Mind," and his Effays on the Intellectual," and the "Active Powers of Man," are noble and lafting monuments of his eminent abilities, his deep penetiarion, and his extenfive learning. Dr. Reid's merit as a teacher and an author is very generally known. He was unquestionably one of the profoundest philofophers of the age, and although fome, who think it a proof of weakness to differ from Mr. Hume, have flighted the fpeculations of Dr. Reid, and undervalued the mathematical precifion which he laboured to introduce, his Enquiry into the Senfes will, probably be coeval with our language. It is founded on facts, which must continue to interett men while theis conftitution continues unchanged If any part of this admirable work were to be felected as the moit ingenious, the inquiry into the eye, into fingle and double vifion, might be quoted. His other works are of a more popular caft: In all of them, however, then appears, accurate arrangement, candid argument, with illustrations to clear and copious, as evince a
