richest commoners in England. His real eftate in Leicestershire amounted to 10,000l. per annum, including an immenfe property of timber. His perfonal eftate, in funded money, bank bills, and cafh, amounted to nearly 200,000l. The whole of this property devolves, by bequeft, to the hon. Mrs. Butler, wife of the hon: Aug. Butler, fecond fon of the countefs of Lanesborough.-The remains of this knight lay in ftate, on the 4th inftant, at Leicester, furrounded by a magnificent plumage, decorated with efcutcheons, and all the paraphernalia of funeral pomp. They were afterwards removed to Swithland, there to be interred in a magnificient monument, which was erected by Sir John in his life-time. On this monument is an infcription, which states, that Sir John was defcended from Norman d'Alverfe, a Brabanter, who came into England in 1066; that one of his ancestors was a faft friend to Charles the First, and another a fupporter of the Commonwealth under Cromwell, and that he himself was a friend to civil and religious liberty, aud always the fupporter of revolution principles.] RUTLANDSHIRE.

On the 7th inftant, the Leicestershire volunteer cavalry were reviewed in the Abby Meadow, by their colonel, Sir W. Sheffington. The affemblage was brilliant and interesting.

NORTHAMPTONSHIRE.

The parish officers of Priddington, in the county of Bedford, have lately advertised, with an eagernefs not very honourable to their generofity, as a runaway from his family, an unfortunate man, who had ruined himself by a contract to provide for the poor, before the late enormous advances in the price of provifions.

At Northampton quarter feffions, on Thurfday, Daniel Abbot, of Little-Addington, was indicted for a mifdemeanor, in engroting and getting into his hands, by buying of Richard Wightman, fifty quarters of wheat, with the intent to fed the fame again; and being found guilty, was fined in the penalty of 51. 5D 2

At Atherstone, in the 41ft year of his age, C. G. Hartold, furgeon and apothecary, fon of the Rev. Sherman Harrold, rector of Temple Patrick, and vicar of Antrim, Ireland. He was initiated at an early age, in the rudiments of his profeffion by his uncle, Grove Harrold, an emiiet furgeon at Coventry. Upon his fettling afterwards at Atherstone, a populous town and extenfive neighbourhood gave scope to talents which merited a larger field for their difplay. In a few years his fuperior knowledge and fuccefsful practice advanced him to the fummit of profeffional eminence: his fkill and judgment engaging the confidence, and bis humanity and tender attentions the love and elteem of his patients. His death was the confequence of a violent fever, which the preffure of too much business at a fickly feafon is fupposed to have occafioned.

Several vagrants have been flogged out of Gloucefter, by which that city, to the credit of the magiftrates, is kept free of that difgraceful nuifances common beggars.

Mr. DANIEL ROBERTS, of Painswick, announces, in Raikes's Gloucefler Journal, that he has fucceeded in condenfing the vital or oxigene air, by which he produces a fait of peculiar nature, that by repeated folution and coagulation becomes fixed, and will endure the fire."

A house at Huntley was lately burnt to the ground, in the night, by the family having omitted effectually to extinguish a fire in the chimney on the preceding day.

Died At Oxford, 82, Mr. S. Fletcher, formerly a bookfel.er in that city. Suddenly, 70, J. Uri, LLD. of the University of Leyden; he was by birth an Hungarian. Several years fince he was employed by the University of Oxford to arrange the Oriental MSS. in the Bodleian Library, a catalogue of which was published in 1787, in confequence of his labours.

At Banbury, at the advanced age of 79, the Rev Geo. Hampton, A. M-He was a native of Wrexham, in Denbighshire, took his degree in the University of Glafgow, where he was contemporary with the Rev. H. Worthington, of Leicester: he was at the head of a diffenting congregation at Banbury for 56 or 57 years, and did honour to the character of the fcholar, the gentleman, and the divine: he diftinguished himfelf by a treatise in fupport of the Doctrine of the Atonement, in oppofition to the late Dr. Taylor, and in later years to Dr. Priestley, who acknowledged him among the moft candid of his opponents. He was refpected by all who knew him; by the clergy of all denominations, and by none more than thofe of the Establishment, fome of whom have borne teltimony to his candour, by reading in the fame defk, and preaching from the fame pulpit, for the last fix years of his life, during the rebuilding of the parish church. His memory had been impaired by a paralytic stroke, but his reafon was clear, and his fight fo good as not to require the help of glaffes his strength had been gradually abating for fome time, but he was fo well as to go from home to a friend's house the day before his death, and was arrested by the grim Tyrant in his way down ftairs to his breakfaft; he had fet his foot upon the last step, fell down, and with a fingle figh funk into the arms of Death. From the length of time he officiated as paftor, in fome families he has left three generations, initiated by him into the Christian church by baptifm.

At a late meeting of the proprietors of estates in Markland Fen, a plan for draining the fame and other adjoining lands effectually and certainly, fo as not to be affected even in seasons extraordinarily wet, was delivered in by an able engineer, &c.-The advantages to be obtained from this drainage (proceeding by the outfall of Tilney Gaol) will confiderably overbalance the expences to be incurred (which, according to the eftimate, amount to 18,58ol. 12s. 6d.) and mu ultimately prove a great public benefit.

He had been lately appointed governor of Grenada; his remains were conveyed to Portsmouth, and interred in the garrifon chapel there.

Five Mofaic pavements have been lately dif Covered in this county, in a field called Nunnery Meadow, in the parish of Maiden Newton., One of them measures 20 fect by 30, another 20 by 16, and a third 15 by 16, connected with the two former by means of a Mofaic paffage 100 feet long, and 8 wide The largest appears to have been the floor of a Roman temple, erected about the time of the emperor Conftantine. All the pavements are enriched with figures of a mafterly defign, chiefly relating to the god Neptune on one of them have been difcovered three legible Latin infcriptions.

Died.] At Exeter, Mrs. M. Sweetland. Mrs. Baft. 40, Mr. W. Ruffel; he was taken ill while in the fields, walked home, and died in about an hour.

Lately, near Plymouth, in the 22nd year of his age, Mr. Benjamin Edy, furgeon of MillPrifon. His death was occafioned by an illnefs of only three days, fuppofed to be occafioned by attention to the duties of his profeffion: He was a young man of very amiable manners and pleafing addrefs; and endowed with good natural abilities, which had been improved by a liberal education. The writer hercof, and a

large circle of his acquaintance, lament their

fevere lofs.

[The remains of the Rev. J. G. Aubrey, weie interred in the family vault at Ystradgunlais, Glamorganshire; the pall was fupported by eight clergymen, and the corpfe was attended to the church by all his tenants, 100 horfcmen, and 400 on foot.]
