SENATOR THE HONORABLE GEORGE FOSTER PEARCE (Minister of State for Defence), Commonwealth of Australia.

Nov. 1908-May 1909 and May 1910-(still in Office, Dec., 1911)

Upon whom has fallen the heavy task of not only bringing into operation in Australia Universal (Compulsory) Military and Naval Training, and carrying
out Lord Kitchener's recommendations relating thereto, but also of laying the foundations of the Royal Australian Navy, with the help and guidance of
Admiral Sir R. Henderson's Report. With such general acceptance is he performing these duties that we find his political opponent, Hon. Joseph Cook,
M.P., the Deputy Leader of the Opposition, lately declaring in the Federal Parliament in a very generous manner that, whilst the Government continued as
it was going in defence matters, it would receive no opposition from him. Senator Pearce is no recent convert to the principle of Universal Training:

ho supported it (and helped the Defence League) long before it was adopted by his party (T abou)

NAVAL AND MILITARY ANNUAL

1911-12

(With which is incorporated "THE CALL,"
the Journal of the Australian National
Defence League, N.S.W. Division).

"WA R."

(Lines by the late Archbishop of Armagh, Right Rev. W. Alexander, D.D.)

'They say that war is hell,' 'the great accursed,'
'The sin impossible to be forgiven ;'

Yet I can look beyond it at its worst

And still find blue in Heaven.

"And as I note how nobly natures form

Under the war's red vein, I deem it true,
That He who made the earthquake and the storm
Perchance makes battles too.

"The life He loves is not the life of span
Abbreviated by each passing breath;

It is the true humanity of man

Victorious over death."
