The Examination is conducted by means of Printed Papers, but the Examiners are not precluded from putting viva voce questions to any Candidate, for the purpose of ascertaining his competence to pass.

All Candidates for the Degree of Bachelor in Arts are examined in Greek, Latin, Mathematics, and in either French, German, or Italian. For the remainder of his Examination each Candidate may choose between the three groups mentioned below.

In Greek each Candidate will be allowed to select for his Examination the works enumerated below of any two of the following Classical Authors :—

Xenophon-Anabasis, Books 2 and 3.
Homer Iliad, four first Books.
Herodotus-Book I.

Eschylus-Prometheus Vinctus.
Euripides-Medea.

Lucian-Walker's Selections.

In Latin he will be allowed to select for his Examination the works enumerated below of any two of the following Classical Authors: :

Virgil-First Six Books of the Æneid.

Horace Satires, Epistles, and Art of Poetry.
Sallust-Catiline Conspiracy and Jugurthine War.
Terence Adelphi and Phormio.

Cicero Orations against Catiline.

Tacitus-Agricola and De Moribus Germanorum.

In Mathematics he will be examined in—

The 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 6th Books of Euclid, and in the
Definitions of the 5th Book.

Arithmetic, including Vulgar and Decimal Fractions.
Algebra, including the usual rules, to the end of Quadratic
Equations, and the Nature and Use of Logarithms.

Plane Trigonometry.

In French, German, or Italian, he will be required to translate from two Modern Authors, in the language selected, and to translate an exercise from English into the same language.

In addition to the above course, each Candidate must also pass in the subjects of one of the following three groups :

FIRST GROUP.

English Philology and Criticism.

Logic.

Metaphysics, or (in place of Metaphysics, at the option of the Candidate) Political Economy and Jurisprudence.

EXAMINATIONS FOR HONORS WIth the Degree OF B.A.

The Examiners select from among the successful Candidates at the Pass Examination those whom they consider deserving of being examined for Honors, and return their names to the Secretary, with the result of the Pass Examination. None others are entitled to compete for Honors, save for those in the Celtic, Sanscrit, or Arabic languages, for which any Candidate who has passed for a Degree may present himself.

Candidates for Honors in the Celtic, Sanscrit, or Arabic languages, are requested to give their names to the Secretary as soon as possible after the Degree Examination.

The Honor Examinations are conducted principally by Printed Papers.

The special courses for the year 1859 are as follows:

1. ANCIENT CLASSICAL LANGUAGES AND LIterature. The Candidates for Classical Honors will be examined in the following course :—

Horace-Odes, Satires, and Epistles.
Virgil-Eneid, Books 1 to 8.
Cicero-Tusculan Disputations.

De Oratore.

Actiones Verrinæ.

Juvenal-Satires, 1, 3, 8, 13, 14.

Tacitus-Annals, Book 1.

Histories, Book 1.

Livy-Books 4 and 22.

Terence Adelphi and Phormio.
Plato-Apologia and Crito.
Thucydides Book 1.
Herodotus-Book 1.

Eschylus Prometheus Vinctus.
Sophocles Edipus Coloneus.
Homer-Iliad, 20 to 24.

Odyssey-12 to 18.

Euripides--Medea, Alcestis, and Orestes.

Greek and Latin Composition in Prose and Verse.

A Gold Medal and £15 will be awarded to the best answerer in this course, and a Prize of £10 to the next answerer, if recommended by the Examiners as possessed of sufficient absolute merit.

2.-ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE.

The Candidates will be examined in the History, Philology, and Grammar of the English language, at various periods, and in the principles of Literary and Grammatical Criticism, as exemplified in its application to various Authors in English Literature.

A Gold Medal and £15 will be awarded to the best answerer in this course, if recommended by the Examiner as possessed of sufficient absolute merit.

3.-MODERN CONTINENTAL LANGUAGES.

Candidates may select for Examination the History, Philology, and Grammar of any of the following Languages, viz. :-French, German, and Italian. They will be required also to translate from English into the language or languages selected.

A Gold Medal and £15 will be awarded to the best answerer, and a Prize of £10 to the next answerer, if recommended by the Examiner as possessed of sufficient absolute merit.

4.-PURE MATHEMATICS.

The Candidates will be examined in the following Course :

Euclid Books—1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and the definitions of the 5th
Book.

Algebra, including its Application to Questions of Proba-
bilities and Annuities, the Theory and Solution of the
Higher Equations, the Theory of Logarithms, and the
Construction and Use of Logarithmic Tables.

Plane Trigonometry, including Demoivre's Theorem and its
Applications, and the Construction and use of Trigo-
nometrical Tables. Spherical Trigonometry and its
Application to Astronomy.

Differential and Integral Calculus, including Differential
Equations.

The First three Sections of the First Book of the Principia.
Conic Sections.

Co-ordinate Geometry, of Two and of Three Dimensions.

A Gold Medal and £15 will be awarded to the best answerer, and a Prize of £10 to the next answerer, if recommended by the Examiner as possessed of sufficient absolute merit.

5.-NATURAL PHILOSOPHY-MIXED MATHEMATICS. The subjects of Examination will be :

Mechanics.
Optics.
Astronomy.

A Gold Medal and £15 will be given to the best answerer in this course, if recommended by the Examiner as possessed of sufficient absolute merit.

6.-NATURAL PHILOSOPHY-PHYSICS.

The Examination will be conducted in accordance with the course of instruction in Physics given in the Queen's Colleges.

A Gold Medal and £15 will be given to the best answerer in this course, if recommended by the Examiner as possessed of sufficient absolute merit.

7.-CHEMISTRY.

The subjects of Examination will be

Chemical Philosophy.

Inorganic and Organic Chemistry.
Crystallography.

A Gold Medal and £15 will be given to the best answerer

in this course, if recommended by the Examiner as possessed of sufficient absolute merit.

8.-NATURAL SCIENCES.

The subjects of Examination will be

The Principles of Animal Structure and Classification.
The Principles of Vegetable Structure and Classification.
The Elements of Geology and Physical Geography.

The Laws of Geographical Distribution of Plants and Ani-
mals.

A Gold Medal and £15 will be given to the best answerer in this course, if recommended by the Examiners as possessed of sufficient absolute merit.

9.-LOGICS AND METAPHYSICS.

The Examination will be conducted in accordance with the courses of instruction in Logics and Metaphysics given in the Queen's Colleges.

A Gold Medal and £15 will be given to the best answerer in this course, if recommended by the Examiner as possessed of sufficient absolute merit.

10.

JURISPRUDENCE AND POLITICAL ECONOMY.

The Examination will be conducted in accordance with the courses of instruction in Jurisprudence and in Political Economy given in the Queen's Colleges.

A Gold Medal and £15 will be given to the best answerer in this course, if recommended by the Examiner as possessed of sufficient absolute merit.

11.-CELTIC LANGUAGES.*

The Examination will include the Critical History and Philology of the Hiberno-Celtic language, with translations of passages from Authors of different periods, and re-translations from English.

A Gold Medal and £10 will be given to the best answerer in this course, if recommended by the Examiner as possessed of sufficient absolute merit.

*Candidates for other Degrees may compete with those for the Degree of B.A. for the Prizes in the Celtic, Sanscrit, and Arabic languages.
