SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION

The Smithsonian Institution is an establishment responsible for (1) promoting the increase and diffusion of knowledge among men and conducting basic scientific research through its private funds and (2) administering the following Government bureaus which the Smithsonian originated and which are maintained by governmental appropriation; National Museum, National Gallery of Art, Bureau of American Ethnology, International Exchange Service, Astrophysical Observatory, United States Regional Bureau of the International Catalogue of Scientific Literature, and National Zoological Park.

Since the Secretary of the Institution and certain other administrative officials are paid from private funds, such funds are used in part for the administration of Government bureaus, and in addition thereto, some private funds are designated for use in connection with the work of certain sections of some of the Government bureaus. The general organization of the Institution, together with its functions and those of the bureaus under its administration, is shown in the accompanying chart, and this is followed by tables giving the expenditures by functions and statutory authority.
