day to the wicked! but a joyful one to the righteous! The triumphs of the wicked will then be The sufferings of the righteous will then have an end; and then will be fulfilled that passage of Scripture which I recollect having read, which says, "He that is unjust, let him be unjust still and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still and he that is holy, let him be holy still." Yes, the doom of each one will then be unalterably and eternally fixed. appear? What will be my lot?

be at the right hand, or the left? state now? Am I prepared to meet my Judge? Am I living prepared for the coming of Christ? or the hour of death? which is the same thing as regards my eternal state. Let me consider in time; for if I am not prepared, how shall I abide the day of his coming, or how shall I stand when he appeareth? May God give me grace to lay these things to heart, ere it be too late! May He who is the giver of all good gifts, give me true repentance and his Holy Spirit, that those things may please him which I do at this present; and that the rest of my life hereafter may be pure and holy; so that at the last I may come to his eternal joy, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Long nights do now come on apace, And stormy blasts I hear,

Which plainly tell me in this place, That winter now is near.

The winter night of death, I ween,
When I my eyes shall close,
If I act well my part on earth,
In heavenly repose.

DECEMBER.

DEC. 1. Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me: for that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the Lord : they would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof. Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices. Prov. i. 28, 29, 30, 31.

The days will come, when ye shall desire to see one of the days of the Son of man, and ye shall not see it. Luke xvii. 22.

Meditate on the danger of deferring your reconciliation with God, &c.

Pray that you may attend to those things which belong to your peace, before they are for ever hid from your eyes.

DEC. 2. Behold, a king shall reign in righteousness. Isaiah xxxii. 1.

And all flesh shall see the salvation of God. Luke iii. 6.

Contemplate the blessings of Christ's reign, &c. Pray that you may know by experience the salvation of God, &c.

DEC. 3. Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped. Then shall the lame man leap as an hart, and the tongue of the dumb sing: for in the wilderness shall waters break out, and streams in the desert. Isaiah xxxv. 5, 6.

Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and show John again those things which ye do hear and see the blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the Gospel preached to them. Matt. xi. 4, 5.

Meditate on the numerous miracles wrought by

the Saviour, &c.

Pray to Him to heal you of all your sinful diseases, &c.

DEC. 4. Speak ye every man the truth to his neighbour; execute the judgment of truth and peace in your gates. Zech. viii. 16.

Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord. Heb. xii 14

Reflect on the excellence of these graces, namely, peace, truth, and holiness.

Pray to be endued with these heavenly virtues.

DEC. 5. Israel shall be saved in the Lord with an everlasting salvation. Isaiah xlv. 17.

And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved. Acts ii. 21.

Meditate on the perpetuity of that salvation which is offered to all in the Gospel, &c.

Pray that you may enjoy it here and through the endless ages of eternity.

DEC. 6. Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad; let the sea roar, and the fulness thereof. Let the field be joyful, and all that is therein then shall all the trees of the wood rejoice before the Lord: for he cometh, for he cometh to judge the earth: he shall judge the world with righteousness, and the people with his truth. Psalm xcvi. 11, 12, 13.

The Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son: that all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. John v. 22, 23.

Meditate on the character of Him who is ordained to be the judge both of quick and dead, &c.
