The Speaker announced the appointment of the following gentlemen, as assistant clerks of the House: B. F. Wallace, second assistant; William C. Sevier, third assistant; Daniel Murley, fourth assistant; William M. Kerr, assistant enrolling clerk; E. Cameron, assistant enrolling clerk, and Thomas H. McKean, folder for the members of the House of Representatives, who were severally sworn in, and entered upon the discharge of their official duties.

On motion of Mr. Darnes:

The House adjourned until Friday morning, 10 o'clock.

The House met pursuant to adjournment.

Message from the Senate, by Mr. Holliday, Assistant Secretary:-
MR. SPEAKER.-I am instructed by the Senate to inform the House of
Representatives, that a bill of the following title has been introduced in
the Senate and passed:-

A bill to amend an act to incorporate the Mercantile Library Hall Company, approved February 17, 1851.

The Senate has, also, passed a concurrent resolution fixing the time for meeting of the two Houses, in Joint Session, to count the votes for Gover nor and Lieutenant-Governor.

Hardin Marr Ward, member clect from the county of Mississipi, appeared, presented his credentials, was qualified, and took his seat.

The Speaker laid before the House, the depositions in contested election. for Representative from Cass county.

Also, the papers in the contested election for Representative from Audrain county.

The reading of which were dispensed with, and referred to the Committee on Elections.

The Speaker laid before the House reports of the Board of Commissioners and Superintendent of the Deaf and Dumb Asylum.

Also, a report of the Board of Managers of the State Lunatic Asylum;

Which were laid on the table.

On motion of Mr. Reid, of Jackson:

The rule, requiring propositions to amend the rules of the House to lie over one day, was dispensed with;

When he submitted the following resolution:

Resolved, That the twenty-ninth rule of the fourth article of the House

rules, be so amended as to make the standing Committee on Banks to consist of thirteen members;

Which was adopted.

The Speaker laid before the House a report of the Auditor of Public Accounts;

Which was, on motion of Mr. Blakey:

Laid on the table, and 10,000 copies ordered to be printed.

On motion of Mr. McClain:

Resolved, That Samuel A. Lowe be, and he is hereby, appointed Assistant Reading Clerk of this House.

The Speaker announced that petitions, remonstrances, memorials, &c., were in order; when the following petitions and memorials were presented and disposed of as follows:

By Mr. Parsons:

A petition of the citizens of Cole county, praying the enactment of a law authorizing suits vs. railroad companies;

Which was referred to the Committee on the Judiciary.

By Mr. Reid, of Jackson:

The memorial of W. H. H. Cundiff, of Cass county;
Which was referred to the Committee on Elections.
By Mr. Henderson:

The memorial of A. B. Tinsley, of Audrain county;
Which was referred to the Committee on Elections.

MR. SPEAKER,-I am instructed by the Senate to inform the House, that a bill of the following title has been introduced into the Senate and passed:

An act to appropaiate money.

Mr. Reid, of Jackson, on leave, called up Senate concurrent resolution. fixing a time for the two Houses to meet in Joint Session, to examine the votes for Governor and Lieutenant-Governor; when,

On motion of Mr. Darnes:

"10 o'clock, A. M.," was stricken out, and "2 o'clock, P. M.," inserted in lieu thereof;

And the resolution, as amended, was agreed to.

Mr. Dick, on leave, called up Senate bill entitled, "An act to appropriate money;"

Which was read a first time, rules suspended, read a second and third times and passed.

Also:

Senate bill entitled, "A bill to amend an act to incorporate the Mercantile Library Hall Company," approved February 17, 1851;

Which was read a first time, rule suspended, read a second time, when

Mr. Parsons moved to refer the bill to the Committee on Corporations; Which motion was decided in the negative.

The rule was suspended, the bill read a third time and passed-the rule requiring the ayes and noes on acts of incorporation being dispensed with. On leave, Mr. Reid, of Jackson, introduced a bill entitled, "An act to

amend an act entitled, an act incorporating Kansas City, Hannibal, and St. Joseph Railroad Company," approved, December 4, 1855;

Which was read a first time, rule suspended, read a second time, and referred to the Committee on Corporations.

Mr. Jones, of Callaway, submitted the following resolutions:

Resolved, That - copies of the report of the Board of Managers of the State Lunatic Asylum, be printed for the use of this House, and that the same be printed with leaded pica, on good book paper, and bound with glazed paper.

Resolved, That the Public Printer be instructed to strike and bind with said Report, copies of the plate representing the plan of said building, when completed; Provided, the officers of said Institution furnish said plate.

Resolved, That the Door-Keeper of this House, be directed to forward to the Superintendent of said Asylum, for the use of the same, five hundred copies of said report, when printed.

On motion of Mr. Blakey, the blank was filled with ten thousand copies; The resolution was then adopted.

Mr. Jones, of Callaway, submitted the following resolutions:

Resolved, That- copies of the Report of the Board of Managers of the State Deaf and Dumb Asylum, be printed for the use of this House, and that the same be printed with leaded pica, on good book paper, and bound with glazed paper..

Resolved, That that the Door-Keeper of the House, be directed to forward to the Superintendent of said Asylum, for the use of the same, five hundred copies of said report, when printed.

Message from the Senate, by Mr. Holliday:

MR. SPEAKER,-I am instructed by the Senate, to inform the House of Representatives, that the Senate has agreed to the House amendment to resolution, fixing 2 o'clock, P. M., this day, for meeting in joint session, to examine the votes for Governor and Lieutenant-Governor.

On motion of Mr. Blakey:

Resolved, That the Door-Keeper be, and he is hereby, instructed to furnish to the several Reporters of the House, each, a copy of the Revised Statutes, and House Journal, of last session, for reference; and, also, furnish each, with duplicate copies of all printed documents of the House, as they shall appear.

Message from the Senate, by Mr. Blow, a Senator :

MR. SPEAKER, I am instructed to inform the House, that the President of the Senate has signed bill entitled, "an act to increase the salary of the Governor of the State of Missouri.

On motion of Mr. Parcels:

The House adjourned till 2 o'clock, P. M.

EVENING SESSION.

House met pursuant to adjournment.

In conformity with a concurrent resolution, the Senate appeared in the Hall of the House of Representatives.

The President took the Speaker's chair, and announced the object of the Joint Session to be, to examine the vote cast at the last August election, for Governor and Lieutenant-Governor.

The roll of the House being called, the following members were noted. being absent:

Messrs. Allen of Henry, Burke, Dudley, Jones of Franklin, Rozier, Sitton, Smith of Jefferson, and Switzler.

The President of the Senate laid before the Joint Session, an abstract of the votes cast for Governor, and Lieutenant-Governor, at the general election, on the first Monday of August, 1856; also, amended returns from Polk and Carrol counties, and a certificate' from the Clerk of the County Court of Benton county.

Mr. Reid, of Jackson, moved that the President of the Senate, and Speaker of the House of Representatives, proceed to examine the vote cast for Governor, and Lieutenant-Governor, at the last August election; Which motion was agreed to.

On motion of Mr. Reid, of Jackson :

Resolved, That the President of the Senate, and Speaker of the House of Representatives, be requested to cause to be read to this Joint Session, the returns of the election for Governor, and Lieutenant-Governor, amended, as well as original.

Mr. Price of the Senate, offered the following resolution:

Resolved by the Joint Session, That the President of the Senate, and Speaker of the House of Representatives be, and they are hereby, instructed to consider, and take into their examination and count, as legal returns, the amended returns from the counties of Polk and Carroll, the township of Washington, in Jackson county, and the returns from township, in

St. Genevieve county;

Pending the consideration of which,

The Joint Session took a recess until to-morrow, 10 o'clock, A. M.
The Senate retired.

On motion of Mr. Albin:

The House adjourned till 10 o'clock, to-morrow, A. M.

SATURDAY MORNING, JANUARY 3, 1857.

The House met pursuant to adjournment.

Message from the Senate, by Mr. Holliday, Assistant Secretary:MR. SPEAKER,-I am instructed by the Senate, to inform the House, that a bill of the following title has been introduced into the Senate:

An act to incorporate the Western River Improvement and Wrecking Company.

Bills of the following titles have been introduced into the Senate and passed:

An act to protect family burying grounds or cemeteries;

An act for the relief of William A. Maddox, late collector of Marion county;

An act to amend an act entitled, "an act to establish and regulate County Treasuries.”

The Senate, accompanied by their officers, arrived in the Hall of the House of Representatives.

The President of the Senate took the chair, and announced that the question before the Joint Session was the consideration of the resolution submitted by Mr. Price, of the Senate, pending when the Joint Session took a recess.

Mr. Albin offered, as a substitute for Mr. Price's resolution, the following:

Resolved, That it is the opinion of this Joint Session that the amended returns from the counties of Carroll and Polk, and the vote of the township of Washington, in Jackson county, and the returns from township, in Ste. Genevieve county, are legal, and should be counted in ascertaining who is duly elected Lieutenant-Governor of the State of Missouri.

Pending which, on motion, the joint session took a recess until 2. o'clock, P. M.

The Senate retired,

And the Speaker resumed the chair.

On motion of Mr. Reid, of Jackson:

The House adjourned until 2 o'clock, P. M.

The House met pursuant to adjournment.

On motion of Mr. Reid, of Jackson:

Resolved, That the twenty-ninth rule of the fourth article of House rules be so amended as to make the standing Committee on Internal Improvements, to consist of thirteen members.

The rule requiring propositions to lay over one day being dispensed with,

Mr. McGee gave notice that on Monday next he would introduce. An act fixing the time for holding courts in the Eleventh Judicial Circuit; also,
