Not to know from whence we came, not to care anything about our ancestors, is to detract from the honor and gratitude due them, to suppress from posterity and to blot from human record the elements which have made us what we are.

THE FRONTISPIECE.

The front part of the house, as shown in the Albertype Frontispiece, was built in Bernardston, Mass., by (8) Samuel Cunnabell3 about 1770-probably a little earlier. A part of the "L" in the rear, still standing but not shown in the cut, was built by him on the first settlement of the town in 1739-the second dwelling-house in the town-at which time there was no road or travel beyond his home through the entire State of Vermont to Canada. The roof was covered with slate in 1828 by his grandson, (34) Joseph Connable, and remains in perfect condition. The old shingles as well as the clapboards were secured with wrought nails made upon the anvil by a neighboring blacksmith. After the death of (8) Samuel3 the homestead was occupied by his son (16) John and his grandsons (34) Joseph5 and (45) Samuel until 1842. Three generations of thirty-three Connables were born here. For further notices of the house see pages 37, 41, 42, 44, 53, 54, 55, 58, 77 and 91. The picture is from a photograph taken in October, 1885. The house fronts easterly, and is on the main road from Greenfield, Mass., to Brattleboro, Vt.
