All meinbers of the second gen. are numbered in the 200, of the third gen. in the 300, of the fourth gen. in the 400, and Where the numbers were not sufficient a letter of the alphabet is added.

To trace a line look first to the index at the back of the book-say for Edward. The index will give the page on which the name is mentioned. On the page you will find" 580 Edward." Just above you will find that he was one of the children of Levi 496. Turn to 496 in heavy black type at the left of each page and you will find all information of Levi. Just above you will find that Levi was one of the chil-. dren of Job 362. By turning to 362 you will find that Job was one of the children of James 208, and James a son of the emigrant Thomas 101. This system of numbering makes it an easy matter to go forwards or backwards with any

line.

COMPACT SIGNED IN THE CABIN OF THE MAYFLOWER.

IN Ye NAME Of God, Amen.-We whose names are underwritten, the loyall subjects of our dread soveraigne Lord King JAMES, by ye grace of God of Great Britaine, France & Ireland King, Defender of the Faith, &c.

Haveing under-taken for ye glorie of God, and advancemente of ye Christian faith, and honour of our King & Countrie, a voyage to plant ye first colonie in ye. northerne parts of VIRGINIA, doe by these presents solemnly & mutually in ye presence of God and one of another, covenant & combine our selves togeather into a civill body politick, for our better ordering and preservation, & furtherance of ye ends aforesaid; and by vertue hearof to enacte, constitute and frame such just & equall lawes, ordinances, acts, constitutions & offices from time to time, as shall be thought most meete & convenient for ye generall good of y Colonie; unto which we promise all due submission and obedience.

In witness whereof we have hereunder subscribed our names at Cape Codd ye 11 of November, in ye year of ye raigne of our soveraigne Lord King JAMES of England, France, & Ireland ye eighteenth, and of Scotland ye fiftyfourth Ano Dom. 1620.

The Mayflower pilgrims spent the first Sunday-December 20th, 1620-on Clark's Island, and the next day landed at Plymouth. The company had 102 members, about one-half of whom died during the first winter.

1623. Trial by jury was first instituted in Plymouth county.

1631. The first parish was built in Plymouth county.

1765. March 8, Parliament passed the Stamp act. 1765. Oct. 7, Colonial Congress met in New York. 1766. Mar. 18, Stamp act repealed.
