SENATORS.

Robert Porter Allen, Lycoming county, was born in Lycoming county, February 6, 1835; educated at Dickinson Seminary, and graduated at Lafayette College in 1855; studied law at Harvard College, and is now engaged in the practice of law.

Charlton Burnett, Monroe county, was born in Stroudsburg, Monroe county, Pa., August 31, 1826; received an academical education; studied law, and is by profession a lawyer; was county superintendent of Monroe county, district attorney, and county treasurer, and member of the Senate 1867-8 and 9, and 1876.

Henry G. Bussey, York county, was born at Green Spring Plantation, Harford county, Maryland, in 1816; educated at Green Spring Academy; learned the profession, and is at present a physician; was physician to prison of York county, judge and inspector of elections, prothonotary 1857 to 1863, member of the Senate session of 1875-76.

Henry Butterfield, Erie county, was born in Butler county, Pa., in 1838; received an academic education; read law, and is an attorney; was transcribing clerk of the House of Representatives, session of 1864, and was a member of the House of Representatives, sessions of 1873 and 1874. James Chesnut, Cumberland county, was born in Southampton township, Cumberland county, 1827; educated in the common schools, read medicine, and attended Washington Medical School, at Baltimore, Md.; is at present engaged in farming; was a member of the Senate, sessions of 1875 and 6. James C. Clarke, Westmoreland county, was born in Westmoreland county, Pa.; educated at Jefferson College, read law, and is at present an attorney.

Thomas Valentine Cooper, Delaware county, was born at Cadiz, Jefferson county, Ohio, January 16, 1835; educated in the public schools; learned the art of printing, and is at present editor of the Delaware County American; was a member of the House of Representatives, sessions of 1870 and '72; member of the Senate, 1874-5-6, and re-elected for a term of four years; elected President pro tem, of the Senate at the close of session of 1877; re-elected session of 1878.

William L. Corbett, Clarion county, was born in Clarion, Clarion county, Pa., February 12, 1826; educated at Clarion Academy; learned the profession, and is an attorney-at-law; was a delegate-at-large to the Constitutional Convention of 1873.

David McLean Crawford, Juniata county, was born in Mifflintown, Juniata county, Pa., March 30, 1826; educated in common and select schools; graduated at University of New York, 1851; learned the profession, and is engaged as a physician and surgeon; was a member of the Senate, sessions of 1871-2 and 3.

William T. Davies, Bradford county, was born in Glanmorganshire, Wales, December 20, 1831; educated at Owego Academy, N. Y.; studied law, and is at present a lawyer; was district attorney of Bradford county, 1865 to 1868. Jones Detwiler, Montgomery county, was born in Upper Dublin township, Montgomery county, Pa., November 11, 1828; educated in the common schools; learned the trade of wheelwright, and is at present a farmer; was school director of Whitpain, Montgomery county, nine years; county auditor, 1859 to 1865.

Andrew H. Dill, Union county, was born at Hereford, Baltimore county, Md., January 18, 1836; graduated at Dickinson College, 1855; read law, and is at present practising law; was a member of the House of Representatives, session of 1870; has been a member of the Senate since 1871. Aaron K. Dunkel, Philadelphia, was born in Manheim township, Lancaster county, Pa., May 20, 1837; educated in the common schools; learned the art of printing, is at present the publisher of the Sunday Republic, of Philadelphia; was Senator from Sixth district, Philadelphia, 1875–76.

David Engelman, Northampton county, was born in Bath, Northampton county, Pa., December 30, 1835; graduated at Jefferson Medical College; learned the profession, and is at present a physician; was a member of the House of Representatives, sessions of 1870 and 1871.

Daniel Ermentrout, Berks county, was born in Reading, Berks county, January 24, 1837; educated at common school, academy, and college; learned the profession, and is an attorney-at-law; was district attorney of Berks county; Senator from Berks county, 1874-5 and 6.

James Bowen Everhart, Chester county, was born near West Chester, Pa.; educated at Princeton College and Law Schools of Harvard and Berlin, 1842 to 1845 and 1849; learned the profession of law; has retired from practice; was captain in the army, 1862, major in 1863.

John Fertig, Crawford county, was born in Venango county, received an academic education; learned the business of producer and manufacturer; is at present an oil producer; was mayor of Titusville, 1873-4 and 5.

Horatio G. Fisher, Huntingdon county, was born in Huntingdon, Pa., April 21, 1836; educated at Lafayette College; learned the business of merchant; is at present a coal operator.

Joseph M. Gazzam, Allegheny county, was born in Pittsburgh, December 2, 1842; educated at the Western University of Pennsylvania; learned the profession of the law; admitted to practice in Allegheny county, 1864; Supreme Court of Pennsylvania, 1866; United States Supreme Court, 1870; is at present an attorney at law; was member of councils of city of Pittsburg, 1870 to 1873.

John Gilfillan, Allegheny county, was born in Upper Saint Clair, Allegheny county, Pa., in 1826; educated at Bethel Academy; learned the business, and is at present a farmer; was a member of the House of Representatives, sessions of 1863 and 1872.

John C. Grady, Philadelphia, was born in Philadelphia, October 8, 1847; educated at the High School, and University Law School; studied the profession of law, and is at present a lawyer.

John M. Greer, Butler county, was born in Jefferson township, Butler county, Pa., August 3, 1844; obtained a common school and academic education; read law, and was admitted to practice in Butler county in 1867; is at present an attorneyat-law; was district attorney of Butler county 1869 to 1872. James W. Hays, Greene county, was born in Waynesburg, Greene county, Pa., December 21, 1817; educated in the common schools; learned the profession of editor; was collector of tolls on Pennsylvania canal, 1850; is at present in the mercantile business.

Eugene Beauharnois Hawley, Susquehanna county, was born in Franklin township, Delaware county, N. Y., June 26, 1838; educated at Delaware Literary Institute; read law, and was admitted to practice in Susquehanna county; is editor of the Democrat, Montrose, Susquehanna county; was principal of New Milford academy for nine years. Andrew Jackson Herr, Dauphin county, was born in Greencastle, Franklin county, December 31, 1832; educated in the high school of Philadelphia; read law, and is at present an attorney-at-law; was district attorney of Dauphin county nine years; member of the House of Representatives 1868 and 1869; member of Senate 1875-6.

Evan Holben, Lehigh county, was born at Pleasant Corner, Lehigh county, November 26, 1837; educated as an attorneyat-law, and is at present a lawyer.

Horatio Gates Jones, Philadelphia; born January 9, 1822, in Roxborough, Philadelphia county, now Twenty-first ward city of Philadelphia; was educated first in the common schools and Haddington College; graduated in 1841, at the University of Pennsylvania; had the honorary degree of A. M.

conferred upon him in 1863, by Brown University; studied law, and is engaged in the practice of that profession; is vice president of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania.

Luther R. Keefer, Schuylkill county, was born at Harrisburg, Pa., March 5, 1834; educated in the public sehools; learned the business of foundryman, and is at present an iron founder.

John Lamon, Philadelphia, was born in Philadelphia, October 17, 1828; educated in the public schools; is at present engaged in no business; was chief of detectives of Philadelphia; deputy collector of internal revenue; member of the House of Representatives, sessions of 1871-2-3; member of the Senate 1875-6.

John A. Lemon, Blair county, was born in Cambria county, Pa.; received a common school education; has followed coal operating and railroad contracting; was burgess of Hollidaysburg three years; was elected to the Senate in 1872. George Van Eman Lawrence, Washington county, was born in Washington county, Pa., November 13, 1818; educated at common school and Washington College; learned the business of a farmer; was a member of the House of Representatives, sessions of 1841-7 and 1858-9; member of the Senate 1849-50-51 and 1861-2-3; Congress 1864 to 1868; delegate at large to Constitutional Convention 1873; member of Senate 1876. George F. Meily, Lebanon county, was born in Jonestown, Lebanon county, Pa., September 8, 1833; educated in the common schools; learned, and is in the lumber, coal, and real estate business.

Hugh McNeill, Allegheny county, was born at Bally Castle, county Antrim, Ireland, September 21, 1822; educated at private school; learned and is engaged in the lumber business; was member of councils from 1862 to 1874; is director in several banks and other corporations; Senator 1875-6. A. H. Mylin, Lancaster county, was born in West Lampeter township, Lancaster county, September 29, 1837; educated at Andover, Mass.. and graduated in law department University of Pennsylvania 1854, and is at present a farmer; was member of the House of Representatives, sessions of 1873-4-5-6.

David A. Nagle, Philadelphia; born in Philadelphia, in 1839; obtained a common school education; learned the book business; is at present engaged in the business of printing law blank stationery; was assessor in Philadelphia four years, and elected to the Senate in 1866.

William I. Newell, Philadelphia, was born in Philadelphia, October 2, 1835; educated at public and private schools, and studied navigation; has been commander of several sailing vessels; is at present salesman in the ship chandlery business; was school director in Philadelphia.

John C. Newmyer, Allegheny county, was born in Westmoreland county, in 1848; read law, and is at present a lawyer; was a member of the House of Representatives, sessions of 1873-4, and of the Senate 1875-6, President pro tem. of the Senate, 1877.

Samuel Richard Peale, Clinton county, was born at Hughesville, Lycoming county, September 20, 1830; graduated at Dickinson College, 1850; learned the profession, and is at present a lawyer.

John Edgar Reyburn, Philadelphia, was born at New Carlisle, Clark county, Ohio, February 7, 1845; educated by tutor, and at Saunders' Institute, West Philadelphia; studied law, and admitted to the bar in Philadelphia, in 1870; a member of the House of Representatives, sessions 1871-4-5 and 6; elected member of the Senate for term of four years, from December 1, 1876.

P. J. Roebuck, Lancaster county, was born in Earleysville, Dauphin county, Pa., December 10, 1838; educated at the University of Pennsylvania; learned the medical profession, and is at present engaged in the practice of medicine. George B. Seamans, Luzerne county, was born at Abington, Luzerne county, Pa., November 11, 1830; received an academic education; studied medicine; graduated at the Pennsylvania Medical College, Philadelphia; is at present a physician and surgeon; coroner of Luzerne county 1872-3-4. Charles H. Seymour, Tioga county, was born in Bath, Steuben county, N. Y., June 21, 1820; obtained a common school and academic education; read law, and is by profession a lawyer. George Handy Smith, Philadelphia, was born in Philadelphia, July 21, 1834; educated at the Locust Street grammar school; learned the business of jeweler and silversmith; was member of the House of Representatives, sessions of 1872-3-4, and of the Senate, 1876.

Thomas St. Clair, Indiana county, was born in Indiana county, Pa., May 5, 1824; educated at the Indiana academy; graduated March, 1847, at Jefferson Medical College; Senator 1864-5. Charles Warren Stone, Warren county, was born in Groton, Middlesex county, Mass., June 29, 1843; educated at common schools, and graduated at Williams College, 1863; taught school and read law; admitted to practice September, 1867; is at present practising law; was county superintendent of common schools, 1865; member House of Representatives, 1870 and '71; member of school board of Warren nine years; president of school board three years; member of council three years.

William L. Torbert, Schuylkill county, was born in Philadelphia, October 24, 1828; educated in the public schools of Philadelphia; learned inercantile business and farming; is at present engaged in farming and the lumber business; was auditor, treasurer, and school director of East Union township, Schuylkill county, Pa.
