"George B. Nesmith" instead of "George W. Nesmith." On motion of Mr. Sawyer of Nashua of the House

Resolved, that he be permitted to amend his return according

to the record.

Said town clerk then amended his return accordingly, by inser ting therein the words "George W. Nesmith" instead of "George Nesmith."

George W. Drake, town clerk of the town of Effingham having been duly sworn, in reply to the question, whether he had made any mistake in making up the record of the votes cast in said town of Effingham for Electors of President and Vice President of the United States on the first Monday of Nobember instant, or whether he had made any mistake in his return of said votes, and if so what that mistake was

Answered, that he had made no mistake in his said record, but that he had made a mistake in his return, by inserting therein "Thomas Edwards" instead of "Thomas M. Edwards."

On motion of Mr. Gregg of the Senate

Resolved, that he be permitted to amend his return according to the record.

Said town clerk then amended his return accordingly, by inser ting therein the words "Thomas M. Edwards" instead of "Thomas Edwards."

Nathan Colburn, Jr., town clerk of the town of Temple having been duly sworn, in reply to the question, whether he had made any mistake in making up the record of the votes cast in said town of Temple for Electors of President and Vice President of the United States on the first Monday of November instant, or wheth er he had made any mistake in his return of said votes, and if so what that mistake was

Answered, that he had made a mistake both in his said record and return, by inserting therein "George Nesmith " instead of "George W. Nesmith," and "Samuel Patch" instead of "Samuel Hatch."

In reply to the question, whether any votes were cast or declared for "Samuel Patch" at the meeting held in said town of Temple on said first Monday of November instant for the choice of Electors of President and Vice President of the United States, and if not how said name of Patch came to be entered upon the records of said town of Temple

He answered, that no such votes were cast or declared at said meeting, and he knew no reason why such votes were entered on

the record and return as aforesaid, except through haste and by mistake.

On motion of Mr. Gregg of the Senate

Resolved, that he be permitted to amend his record and return according to the fact.

Said town clerk then amended his record and return accordingly, by inserting the words therein "George W. Nesmith " stead of "George Nesmith," and "Samuel Hatch" instead of "Samuel Patch."

David Thornton, town clerk of the town of Lempster having been duly sworn, in reply to the question, whether he had made any mistake in making up the record of the votes cast in said town of Lempster for Electors of President and Vice President of the United States on the first Monday of November instant, or whether he had made any mistake in his return of said votes, and if so what that mistake was

Answered, that he had made no mistake in his said record, but that he had made a mistake in his return, by inserting therein "Amos Brewster" instead of "Amos A. Brewster."

On motion of Mr. Gregg of the Senate

Resolved, that he be permitted to amend his return according to the record.

Said town clerk then amended his return accordingly, by inserting therein "Amos A. Brewster " instead of "Amos Brewster." James M. Paine, town clerk of the town of Centre Harbor, having been duly sworn, in reply to the question, whether he had made any mistake in making up the record of the votes cast in said town of Centre Harbor, for Electors of President and Vice President of the United States on the first Monday of November instant, or whether he had made any mistake in his return of said votes, and if so, what that mistake was,

Answered, that he had made no mistake in his said record, but that he had made a mistake in his return by omitting to insert therein twenty-five votes which were cast for Thomas M. Edwards.

On motion of Mr. Sawyer of Nashua of the House

Resolved, that he be permitted to amend his said return accor ding to the record.

James Crawford, town clerk of the town of Alexandria, having been duly sworn, in reply to the question, whether he had made any mistake in making up the record of the votes cast in said town

of Alexandria, for Electors of President and Vice President of the United States on the first Monday of November instant, or whether he had made any mistake in his return of said votes, and if so, what that mistake was,

Answered, that he had made a mistake both in his said record and return, by inserting therein "John Weeks" instead of "John W. Weeks."

Resolved, that he be permitted to amend his record and return according to the fact.

Said town clerk then amended his record and return according ly, by inserting therein the words "John W. Weeks" instead of "John Weeks."

Benjamin Skinner, town clerk of the town of Croydon, having been duly sworn, in reply to the question, whether he had made any mistake in making up the record of the votes cast in said town of Croydon, for Electors of President and Vice President of the United States, on the first Monday of November instant, or wheth er he had made any mistake in his return of said votes, and if so, what that mistake was,

Answered, that he had made no mistake in his said record, but that he had made a mistake in his return by inserting therein "Thomas Edwards" instead of "Thomas M. Edwards."

On motion of Mr. Gregg of the Senate

Said town clerk then amended his return accordingly, by inser ting therein the words "Thomas M. Edwards" instead of "Thomas Edwards."

Timothy P. Turner, town clerk of the town of Bethlehem, be ing duly sworn, in reply to the question, whether he had made any mistake in making up the record of the votes cast in said town of Bethlehem, for Electors of President and Vice President of the United States on the first Monday of November instant, or whether he had made any mistake in the return of said votes, and if so, what that mistake was,

Answered, that he had no record of the meeting held in said town on said day, except some minutes made on a separate piece of paper at the time of said meeting, that he had not yet recorded" the proceedings of said meeting in his book of records, that the name of Amos Brewster appeared both in his minutes and in his return as having received 44 votes.

In reply to the question, whether he had any doubt that the

name upon the ballots thrown at said meeting was "Amós A. Brewster" instead of "Amos Brewster,"

He answered, that he had not.

On motion of Mr. Sawyer of Nashua

Resolved, that said town clerk be permitted to amend or correct his record and return according to the facts within his knowledge. Said town clerk then made up his record and corrected his return accordingly, by inserting therein "Amos A. Brewster," instead of "Amos Brewster."

William L. Chase, town clerk of the town of Bristol, having been duly sworn, in reply to the question whether he had made any mistake in making up the record of the votes cast in said town of Bristol, for Electors of President and Vice President of the United States on the first Monday of November instant, or whether he had made any mistake in his return of said votes, and if so, what that mistake was,

Answered, that he had made a mistake both in his said record and return, by inserting therein "John P. Weeks" instead of "John W. Weeks."

On motion of Mr. Gregg of the Senate

Resolved, that he be permitted to amend his record and return according to the fact.

Said town clerk then amended his record and return accordingly, by inserting therein the words "John W. Weeks" instead of John P. Weeks."

The town clerk of the town of Northumberland having been called by the chairman of the Convention, did not appear.

On motion of Mr. Quincy of the House

The Convention proceeded to read and record the returns of votes from the foregoing towns, as amended.

On motion of Mr. Quincy of the House

Ordered, that the returns from said towns as above amended together with the return from the town of Northumberland, be recommitted to the joint select committee to whom were referred the returns of votes for Electors of President and Vice President of the U. States.

On motion of Mr. Quincy of the House

The Convention proceeded to open, read and record the returns of votes for Electors of President and Vice President of the United States from the towns of Dalton and Society Land, and com pleted the same.

The Convention rose and the Senate withdrew.

Resolved, that the rules of the House be so far suspended as that the several committees have leave at this time to make reports.

Mr. Dame, from the committee on Unfinished Business, to whom was referred the petition of Levi Wilson, praying that a part of his farm be disannexed from the town of Orange and annexed to the town of Canaan, made a report,

Resolved, that said petition be referred to the committee on Towns and Parishes.

Mr. Ayer, from the committee on Finance, to whom was referred a resolution instructing them to inquire into the expediency of altering the law so that the inventories for making taxes shall be taken on the first day of May instead of the first day of April, made à report,

Resolved, that it is inexpedient to legislate upon the subject. Mr. Cate, from the committee on Military Affairs, to whom was referred the petition of the officers of the artillery company
