Mr. Baker of Hillsborough moved that the resolution be farther amended by adding the words following, to wit: "and that the chairman of said committee be directed to inform the selectmen of the town of Henniker of the reception and reference of said memorial or statement of facts, and assign a day when said selectmen and town clerk may be heard before said committee in relation to the matter of said statement, if they shall see cause, and report facts to the House"-

Which was accepted by the mover.

Mr. Ayer moved that the resolution be farther amended by inserting after the word selectmen the words "and town clerk."

AFTERNOON.

Mr. Howard of Rochester gave notice that he will to-morrow ask leave to introduce a bill entitled "An act to lessen the expenses of pauperism."

Mr. Jenness of Portsmouth, by leave, presented the account of Andrew S. Woods.

Ordered, that it be referred to the committee on Claims. On motion of Mr. Perkins of Jackson

Resolved, that the committee on the Judiciary be instructed to inquire into the constitutionality of unincorporated places notifying and holding meetings in their respective places for the choice of Representatives to the General Court.

A message, in writing was received from His Excellency the Governor by the Secretary of State, which was read and is as follows:

and House of Representatives:

From the Department of the Secretary of State at Washington there has been forwarded to this place and is now deposited in the Capitol, a set of Standard Weights, subject to such disposition as the Legislature shall direct.

A message from the Senate by their Clerk:

"Mr. Speaker-The Senate concur with the House of Representatives in the passage of a bill entitled "An act to render railroad corporations liable for damages by fire or steam," with an amendment in which they ask the concurrence of the House.

"The Senate also concur with the House in the passage of a a resolution classing Pinkham's Grant with the town of Jackson, and a resolution classing Nash and Sawyer's Location, Hart's Location and Crawford's Grant with the town of Carroll.'

The House proceeded to the consideration of the amendment to the bill which came down from the Hon. Senate.

Resolved, that the House concur in said amendment.
Ordered, that the Clerk inform the Senate thereof.

A message from the Senate by their Clerk:

Mr. Speaker-The Senate concur with the House of Representatives in the passage of a bill entitled "An act in addition to and in amendment of an act entitled an act regulating process and trials in civil causes.'

The Senate have passed a bill entitled "An act authorizing an increase of members to Engine companies No. 2 and 4 in Concord," in which they ask the concurrence of the House."

The House proceeded to the consideration of the bill which came down from the Honorable Senate.

On motion of Mr. Locke of Alexandria

Resolved, that the committee on the Judiciary be instructed to

inquire into the expediency of providing by law that persons who receive certificates from surgeons, shall not receive any thing for doing military duty during the continuance of said certificate, although they be returned to the selectmen by the commanding of ficer of any company, and report by bill or otherwise.

Mr. Poor of Raymond submitted the following resolution: Resolved, that when the House adjourn this afternoon, they adjourn to meet again on Monday next at three o'clock in the after

noon.

On motion of Mr. Knapp-

The House resumed the consideration of the bill entitled "An act to abolish imprisonment for debt.”

Which was read a second time.

Mr. Parker of Fitzwilliam offered an amendment to the bill. Pending the question of the adoption of said amendment, Mr. Swasey moved that the bill and amendment lie on the table and that the Clerk be directed to procure three hundred printed copies of the amendment for the use of the House.

Mr. Wells called for a division of the question.

On the question,

Shall the bill and amendment lie on the table?

It was decided in the affirmative.

And on the question,

Shall the Clerk be directed to procure three hundred printed copies of the amendment for the use of the House?

It was decided in the negative.
