AFTERNOON.

The Senate proceeded to the order of the day on the bill entitled "An act establishing a new proportion for the assessment of public taxes."

On motion of Mr. Nutter

Resolved, that the rules of the Senate be so far suspended that this bill be read a third time by its title.

Said bill was accordingly read a third time.

Resolved, that it pass and its title be as aforesaid.

Ordered, that the Clerk notify the House of Representatives accordingly.

Mr. Johnson, from the joint select committee appointed to wait upon his Excellency the Governor and inform him of the election of the Hon. Levi Woodbury as Senator to represent this State in the Congress of the United States, and of his acceptance of the appointment, reported that they had attended to the duty assigned

them.

Resolved, that when the Senate adjourn this afternoon, it be to meet again on Monday next at three o'clock in the afternoon. On motion of Mr. Brown

Resolved, that the Senate now have a recess until a quarter past four o'clock this afternoon.

MONDAY, DEC. 21, 1840.

Mr. Goodhue, from the committee of conferees on the part of the Senate upon the disagreement of the two Houses on the amendment of the Senate to the resolution in favor of George P. Meserve and others, reported that they had met the conferees on the part of the House of Representatives, and that the committee had agreed to recommend that the Senate recede from their proposed amendment, and adopt a different one, striking out the words George P. Meserve," and inserting instead thereof the words "George Pendexter."

On the question, will the Senate recede from their proposed amendment and adopt that recommended by the committee of conference?

It was decided in the affirmative.

Ordered, that the Clerk notify the House of Representatives accordingly.

A message from the House of Representatives by their Clerk:

"Mr. President-The House of Representatives have passed bills with the following titles, and the following resolutions, in which they ask the concurrence of the Honorable Senate:

"An act to incorporate the Portsmouth and Dover Railroad." "An act for the encouragement of Agriculture."

"An act to alter the name of the first Baptist Society in Portsmouth."

"An act in addition to and in amendment of an act entitled an act for the support and regulation of primary schools, passed Jan. 4, 1833."

"An act allowing to the sixth company of infantry in the thirteenth regiment of the militia of this State an additional number of

arms."

"A resolution directing copies of the statutes and other books to be furnished to the commissioners appointed to revise, codify and amend the statute laws of this state."

"A resolution directing the printing of Dr. Jackson's Geological Report."

The House concur in the amendment of the Honorable Senate to the resolution fixing a day upon which the business of the pres

ent session may be brought to a close; with an amendment, in which they ask the concurrence of the Senate.

The House of Representatives concur in the first and refuse to concur in the second amendment of the Honorable Senate to the bill entitled "An act in addition to an act entitled an act for the support and regulation of primary schools, passed July 6, 1827."

The first of the foregoing bills, sent up from the House of Representatives for concurrence, was read a first and second time. Ordered, that it be referred to the committee on Incorporations.

The second of said bills was read a first and second time. Ordered, that it be referred to the committee on Agriculture and Manufactures.

The third of said bills, entitled "An act to alter the name of the First Baptist Society in Portsmouth," was read a first and second time.

On motion of Mr. Goodhue

Resolved, that the rules of the Senate be so far suspended, that this bill be read a third time at the present time.

Said bill was accordingly read a third time.

Resolved, that it pass and its title be as aforesaid.

Ordered, that the Clerk notify the House of Representatives accordingly.

The fourth of said bills was read a first and second time.
Ordered, that it be referred to the committee on Education.
The fifth of said bills was read a first and second time.

Ordered, that it be referred to the committee on Military Af

fairs.

The first of the foregoing resolutions, directing copies of the statutes and other books to be furnished the commissioners appointed to revise, codify and amend the laws, was read a first and second time.

Resolved, that the rules of the Senate be so far suspended that this resolution be read a third time at the present time. Said resolution was accordingly read a third time.

The second of said resolutions, directing the printing of Dr. Jackson's Geological Report, which was read a first and second time.

The Senate proceeded to the consideration of the bill entitled "An act in addition to an act entitled an act for the support and regulation of primary schools, passed July 6, 1827," together with their second amendment thereto in which the House had refused to concur.

On motion of Mr. Adams

Resolved, that the Senate recede from their said second proposed amendment to said bill.

Ordered, that the Clerk notify the House of Representatives accordingly.

The Senate proceeded to the consideration of the resolution fixing a day for the close of the present session, together with the amendment of the House to the Senate's amendment to said resolution, striking out the words "Wednesday, the twenty-third day of December instant," and inserting instead thereof the words "Thursday, the twenty-fourth day of December instant.”

Resolved, that the Senate concur in the amendment of the House to the Senate's amendment to said resolution.

Ordered, that the Clerk notify the House of Representatives accordingly.

The Senate adjourned.

TUESDAY, DEC. 22, 1940.

Mr. Goodhue, from the joint committee on Engrossed Bills, reported that they had carefully examined and found correctly engrossed bills with the following titles:

"An act relating to primary schools."

"An act relating to the return of votes, and making further provision for certifying the same."

"An act providing for the admeasurement of round Ship tim

ber."

“An act in amendment of an act entitled an act to incorporate the proprietors of the Pinkham Turnpike Road, approved July 4, 1834."

"An act in addition to and in amendment of an act entitled an act to provide for the choice of Road Commissioners."

"An act to repeal an act entitled an act relating to the organization of the militia and for other purposes."

"An act in amendment of an act entitled an act establishing the times and places for holding Courts of Probate in the county of Coos, approved June 19, 1840."

"An act in addition to and amendment of an act entitled an act relating to banks and banking, and to establish Bank Commissioners for the State of New Hampshire, approved July 5, 1837." "An act to abolish the right to vote by proxy except in certain cases."

"An act establishing a new proportion for the assessment of public taxes."

"An act to constitute the counties of Belknap and Carroll."

A message was received from the House of Representatives giving information that the Speaker of that body had signed the foregoing bills, reported as correctly engrossed by the committee on Engrossed Bills, and their Clerk was directed to lay them before the Senate for the signature of their President.

Thereupon the President of the Senate signed said bills and the same were delivered to the committee on Engrossed Bills, to be laid before the Governor for his approval and signature.

Mr. Goodhue, from said committee, reported that they had this day presented the aforesaid bills, by them reported as correctly engrossed, to His Excellency the Governor for his approval.

Mr. Johnson, from the committee on Military Affairs, to whom was referred the bill entitled "An act allowing to the sixth company of Infantry in the thirteenth regiment of the militia of this State an additional number of arms," reported it without amend

ment.

On the question, shall this bill be read a third time?

It was decided in the affirmative.
