of butter, and a pint of beer; FOR WEDNESDAY morning, four ounces of bread, and a pint of broth; FOR DINNER, four ounces of bread, and a pint of peafe foup, and a pint of beer; FOR SUPPER, four ounces of bread, with two ounces of cheese, or one ounce of butter, and a pint of beer; FOR THURSDAY morning, four ounces of bread, with a pint of milk pottage; FOR DINNER, four ounces of bread, seven ounces of beef, or other wholesome flesh, with a pint of broth, and a pint of beer; FOR SUPPER, four ounces of bread, with two ounces of cheese, or one ounce of butter, and a pint of beer; FOR FRIDAY morning, four ounces of bread, and a pint of broth; FOR DINNER, four ounces of bread, and a pint of rice milk, and a pint of beer; FOR SUPPER, four ounces of bread, with two ounces of cheefe, or one ounce of butter, and a pint of beer; FOR SATURDAY morning, four ounces of bread, and a pint of milk pottage; FOR DINNER, fix ounces of bread, and three of cheese, or one of butter, with a pint of beer; FOR SUPPER, four ounces of bread, with two ounces of cheese, or one ounce of butter, and a pint of beer; as for thofe that work, more bread to be allowed, if required; greens or roots to be provided with the meat, if not too scarce; twice in the fummer season, beans and bacon; once green peafe buttered; the bread and beer to be good and wholefome, fuch as was heretofore made and used in the house when under the immediate direction of a committee; AND alfo fhall and will be fubject in all matters relating to the government of the faid poor, where the contrary is not specified in these prefent articles of agreement, to the direction and orders of a committee to be appointed by order of a veftry, who fhall, in conjunction with the faid churchwardens and overfeers, or their fucceffors for the time being, meet in the room heretofore used for that purpose in the faid work-house, or the major part of them, who shall be at any one time prefent (not lefs than five perfons to be deemed a committee) and all or either of whom may at any time have free accefs into the faid work-houfe, or any part thereof; AND alfo fhall and will find and provide for all fuch poor perfons as fhall be committed to his care by the faid churchwardens and overfeers, or their fucceffors for the time being, during the faid term of one year, warm and convenient cloathing, that is to fay, for each man and boy, a pair of fhoes, a coat, waistcoat, and breeches, and for each woman and girl, a pair of fhoes and a gown, and two things at the least of every other fort of neceffary apparel for each poor perfon, and for each poor child who fhall by order of the faid churchwardens, and overfeers, or their fucceffors (or the major part of them) for the time being, be put apprentice out of the faid workhoufe, fhall and will also, on their being bound, find and provide for, and deliver to each boy, a new fhirt, fhoes, and ftockings, and a cap; and to each girl, a new fhift, cap, gown, petticoat, fhoes and ftockings, over and above their common apparel, all which cloathing fhall be equal in quality to that which was heretofore provided for the poor, when under the immediate direction of a committee; AND fhall and will alfo provide all manner of phyfic, and furgery, and fuitable diet for fuch of the fick and ailing poor, who from time to time shall stand NUMB, II,

in need thereof, and fhall and will alfo, at the expence of the faid D. F. his executors or administrators, get all fuch of the faid poor who fhall need it into any hofpital, whether afflicted with lunacy or any other difeafe; and alfo fhall and will, if fuch poor perfons fhall happen to die in any hofpital, pay and defray the expences of all burials of fuch poor perfons, and alfo of all those that shall die in the faid workhoufe; and alfo fhall and will pay and defray the expences of providing a midwife, or a physician, if neceffary; and alfo the expence of the chriftenings of all fuch poor children as fhall be born in the faid workhouse; and alfo fhall and will pay and defray all expences of paffing and removing to the place of their proper fettlements, all fuch poor perfons as fhall be fent to the faid workhoufe, and do not belong to the faid parish; and the expence of all appeals dependent thereon, whenever the committee fhall think it reafonable to order the fame to be tried, and all other incidental charges and expences whatfoever which shall attend the maintaining and providing for the faid poor for the time aforefaid; and alfo fhall and will caufe the poor children of the faid workhoufe to be taught to read, and to repeat the Church Catechism by heart, and fhall read, or caufe to be read in the faid workhouse, the prayers used in the Church of England, morning and evening, at which all the poor who are able to attend fhall be present every day, except Sundays, and caufe all and every poor perfon who is able to attend Divine Service in the faid parish church every Sunday, both morning and afternoon, except fuch as he fhall have occafion to employ on bufinefs of neceffity; and if any of the poor do misbehave on thofe occafions, fhall and will fignify the names of fuch to the faid committee; AND alfo that he the faid D. F. his executors, adminiftrators or affigns, fhall not, nor will compel any of the faid poor to labour immoderately, or caufe them to work longer than from the hours of fix in the morning to fix in the evening, allowing half an hour's respite at breakfast time, one hour for dinner, and half an hour in the afternoon; AND alfo fhall not, nor will, without the confent of the faid committee, inflict, or caufe or fuffer any corporal puifhment to be inflicted on any of the faid poor who are above the age of fixteen years, otherwife than by confining fuch as are refractory to one or more rooms, till fuch time as the faid committee fhall meet, unless in fuch inftances wherein it fhall, or may, become neceffary to repeal force with force, nor fhall not, nor will correct, or caufe, or fuffer any of the poor children in the said workhoufe to be corrected but with moderation, and with no other inftrment than a fmall fwitch, or rattan cane, without the affent of the faid committe, nor any otherwife abufe or mifufe any of the faid poor who fhall, from time to time, be put under his care as aforefaid, but in all things well ufe, and provide for all the faid poor, in fuch good and fufficient manner as the church wardens and overfeers of the poor of the faid parifh are by law bound and obliged to do; AND alfo fhall and will, in all cafes of murder or accidental death (where otherwife the fame ought to be done by and at the expence of the faid parish) pay and defray all fuch expences as far as to obtain the coroner's warrant for

F. his executors and adminiftrators, fhall not appoint any perfon or perfons to act as his, their, or either of their fubftitutes, in the management, and direction, or government of the poor in the faid workhouse, or any affairs to be tranfacted therein, whom the faid committee fhall not approve; AND that he the faid D. F. his executors or administrators, fhall and will, at the end of the faid term of one year, or other fooner determination of these prefents, deliver back to the faid churchwardens and overfeers of the poor, or their fucceffors for the time being, all fuch poor perfons who (having been by them, or either of them, committed thereunto) fhall be then remaining under his care, fitly and conveniently cloathed; AND at the fame time fhall and will, quietly and peaceably, yield and furrender up the poffeffion of the faid workhouse, and the appurtenances, unto the faid churchwardens and overfeers of the poor of the faid parifh for the time being; AND the faid T. S. 7. W. and W. IV. the faid churchwardens, and the faid W. H.T. L. W. G. and J. P. the faid overfeers of the poor, DO hereby for themfelves and their fucceffors, grant, covenant, and agree, to and with the faid D. F. his executors and adminiftrators, that he, they, or either of them, fhall or may, during the faid term of one year, or other fooner determination of thefe prefent articles of agreement, have, hold, occupy, poffefs, and ufe, for the purpose of employing and maintaining the faid poor of the faid parish only, ALL that brick building, with a large yard behind, fituate in

in the faid parish, built, and now and for many years past used as a workhouse for the purpose aforefaid; AND alfo the brewhouse there erected, and all the appurtenances thereunto belonging, together with all the goods, furniture, utenfils for work, and other particulars mentioned in the schedule or inventory thereof hereunto annexed, free and clear of all, and all manner of rent, taxes, or expences whatfoever, except only the rent of the New River water; AND that they the faid churchwardens and overfeers, or their fucceffors, fhall and will lay oat and expend what shall be needful and neceffary to be done in and about the repairs of the faid premifes; AND alfo that they the faid churchwardens and overfeers, and their fucceffors for the time being, fhall and will, in cafe the faid D. F. his executors and adminiftrators, fhall, from time to time, have fulfilled his part of this agreement, well and truly pay, or caufe to be paid unto the faid D. F. his executors, adminiftrators, and affigns, the full fum of

pounds on each of the days hereafter-named, or within fourteen days after, that is to fay, the twenty-fifth day of December, the twentyfifth day of March, the twenty-fourth day of June, and the twentyninth day of September next ensuing the date hereof; AND alfo that if the number of poor perfons by them committed to, and remaining under the care of the said D. F. his executors or administrators, fhall at any one time time exceed one hundred and fixty, they fhall and will, for each and every one over and above the faid number, pay, or caufe to be paid unto the said D. F. his executors, adminiftrators or aigns, the further fum of two fhillings and four-pence per week, and

the faid weekly account fhall be reckoned to commence from Thurfday the and for all and every poor perfon who fhall be committed to his care by the faid churchwardens and overfeers of the poor of the faid parish, or their fucceffors for the time being, or who fhall be discharged, die, or abfcond on any of the intermediate days between any one Thursday and the Thursday following, during the time this agreement fhall fubfift, the fum of two fhillings and four-pence fhall be allowed and paid to the faid D. F. his executors and adminiftrators, in the fame manner as if he or they had maintained and provided for fuch poor perfons during the whole week, if the number of poor perfons remaining under his or their care do at the time of fuch admiffion, difcharge, death, or abfconding, exceed and not otherwife; AND alfo, that if any of the poor children belonging to the faid parish shall be, by them the faid churchwardens and overfeers of the poor of the said parish, or their fucceffors for the time being, put and placed apprentice, that then the confideration-money to be paid with fuch child or children, and the charge of binding fhall be paid by the faid churchwardens and overfeers, or one of them; AND alfo that it fhall and may be lawful for the faid D. F. his executors and adminiftrators, to fet to work all fuch poor perfons as fhall be by the faid churchwardens and overfeers committed to the care of him the faid D. F. his executors and adminiftrators, excepting fuch whofe age or infirmities render them incapable, and to receive and take to his and their own proper use and benefit, whatever profit fhall arife by or from the labour of the faid poor perfons, or any of them; AND further, that they the faid churchwardens and overfeers of the poor, and their fucceffors for the time being, fhall and will ufe their endeavours to affift the said D. F. his executors and adminiftrators (if by him or them requested fo to do) in removing the poor not legally fettled in the faid parish of unto their pro

per place of fettlement; AND alfo fhall and will, in all cafes of murder, or accidental death, which fhall happen in the faid parifh to any poor perfon, who hath not by them, or fome or one of them, been committed to the care of the faid D. F. his executors or adminiftrators, pay the expence of burying the corps ; AND alfo, that the faid D. F. his executors and administrators, fhall be exempt from any expence on account of fuch poor perfons, as the faid churchwardens and overfeers of the poor, or their fucceffors for the time being, or the committee fhall think proper to relieve, unless the faid poor perfons are by them, or fome or one of them, fent into the faid workhoufe, PROVIDED always, and it is hereby mutually agreed, by and between the parties to these presents, that he the faid D. F. his executors and adminiftrators, fhall not be required to find or give any other cloathing, than what is abfolutely neceflary for or unto fuch poor perfons as fhall be by the faid churchwardens or overfeers of the poor of the faid parifh, or their fucceffors for the time being, committed to his or their care, nor to cause them to attend Divine Service on any Sunday in the faid parish church as aforefaid, until fuch poor perfons fhall have remained fo three months, if at the fame time

the number of poor perfons remaining under his or their care doth exceed ▬▬▬▬▬; AND also, that if the legislature of this kingdom fhall enact or appoint any other method and means of providing for the poor thereof than that which is now lawfully used therein, by which means the faid churchwardens and overfeers fhall be withheld or restrained from performing this agreement, or any part thereof, that then the faid agreement, or fo much, and fuch part thereof, as fhall then remain unperformed, fhall be, and the fame is hereby declared void, and of none effect. AND WHEREAS the goods, utenfils, and things mentioned and contained in the fchedule or inventory herein before referred unto, were on the day of laft appraised and valued by Mr. B. H. and Mr. 7. r. who have fixed the value thereof at the sum of pounds, THEREFORE it is mutually agreed by and between the parties hereto, that at the expiration of the faid one year, or whenever this agree. ment fhall become void, the like appraisement of the goods in the faid workhouse shall be again made by two indifferent appraisers, of which each party to thefe prefents fhall chufe one; AND if by the faid fecond appraifement, the value of the goods then in the faid workhouse fhall amount unto less than the faid fum of pounds, fo much as the value of the faid goods fhall fall fhort of the faid fum of ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ pounds, fhall be paid in money by the faid D. F. his executors or adminiftrators, unto the faid churchwardens and overfecrs, or their fucceflors for the time being; AND if on the said fecond appraisement, the faid goods fh Il be valued at more than the sum of —— pounds, fo much as the value of the fame thall exceed the faid fum, fhall be paid in money by the faid churchwardens and overfeers, or their fucceffors for the time being, unto the faid D. F. his executors, adminiftrators or affigns; AND it is likewife agreed, that if any goods be brought into the said workhoufe during the faid term, being the property of any poor perfon, who hath been fince the commencement of the faid term of one year, or fhall be refident therein at the time fuch fecond appraisement fhall be made, fuch goods fhall not be any way included in the faid inventory or appraisement, but the fame fhall be difpofed of as the faid churchwardens and overfeers of the poor, or their fucceffors for the time being, fhall direct; AND it is alfo mutually agreed by and between the parties to thefe prefents, that on failure of performance of all or any one of the articles of this agreement, which on the part and behalf of the faid D. F. his executors and adminiftrators, should and ought to be done, that he, they, or one of them, fhall, on notice being given in writing, and left for him, them, or one of them, at the faid workhoufe, by order of the faid committee, or the majority of the faid churchwardens and overfeers of the poor, or their fucceffors for the time being, forthwith rectify the fame; and fhall also forfeit and pay to the faid churchwardens and overfeers of the poor, or their fucceffors for the time being, the fum of for the first omiffion or neglect, and fign his name to a written acknowledgement thereof; for the fecond omiffion or neglect, the fum of
