H! who can speak the vast dismay
That fills the sinner's mind,

C. M.

When, torn by death's strong hand away, He leaves his all behind!

2 Worldings who cleave to earthly things,
But are not rich to God,

Will feel that death is full of stings,
And hell a dark abode.

3 How blinded mortals fondly scheme
For happiness below,

Till death destroys the pleasing dream,
And they awake to wo.

4 O Saviour! make us timely wise,
Thy Gospel to attend;

That we may live above the skies,
When time and life shall end.

TIME! how few thy value weigh,

How few will estimate a day!

L. M.

Days, months, and years are rolling on,
The soul neglected and undone.

2 In painful cares, or empty joys,
Our life its precious hours destroys:
Whilst death stands watching at our side,
Eager to stop the living tide.

3 Was it for this, ye mortal race,
Your Maker gave you here a place?
Was it for this His thoughts designed
The frame of your immortal mind

4 For nobler cares, for joys sublime,
He fashioned all the sons of time;
Pilgrims on earth, but soon to be
The heirs of immortality.

LIFE is the hour that God hath given

L. M.

To 'scape from hell, and fly to heaven, The day of grace; and mortals may Secure the blessings of the day.

2 Then what my thoughts design to do,
My hands, with all your might pursue;
Since no device nor work is found,
Nor faith, nor hope, beneath the ground,

3 There are no acts of pardon passed
In the cold grave to which we haste;
But darkness, death, and long despair,
Reign in eternal silence there.

HILE life prolongs its precious light, Mercy is found and peace is given, But soon, ah! soon, approaching night Shall blot out every hope of heaven.

L. M.

2 While God invites, how blessed the day! How sweet the Gospel's charming sound! Come, sinners, haste, oh! haste away,

While yet a pardoning God is found.

3 Soon, borne on time's most rapid wing, Shall death command you to the grave; Before his bar your spirits bring,

And none be found to hear or save,

4 In that lone land of deep despair,
No Sabbath's heavenly light shall rise
No God regard your bitter prayer,
Nor Saviour call you to the skies.

YOME, O ye sinners! to the Lord,
In Christ to paradise restored;
His proffered benefits embrace,
The plenitude of Gospel grace.

2 A pardon written with His blood;
The favor and the peace of God;
The seeing eye, the feeling sense,
The mystic joys of penitence;

L. M.

3 The godly fear the pleasing smart,
The meltings of a broken heart;
The tears that tell your sins forgiven;
The sighs that waft your souls to heaven;

4 The guiltless shame, the sweet distress,
The unutterable tenderness;

The genuine, meek humility;
The wonder, why such love to me?

5 The o'erwhelming power of saving grace, The sight that veils the seraph's face; The speechless awe that dares not move, And all the silent heaven of love.

YOME, weary souls, with sin distressed,
Come, and accept the promised rest;
The Saviour's gracious call obey,

And cast your gloomy fears away.

L. M.

2 Oppressed with sin, a painful load,
Oh! come and spread your woes abroad:
Divine Compassion, mighty Love,
Will all the painful load remove.

3 How mercy's boundless ocean flows,
To cleanse your guilt and heal your woes:
Pardon and life, and endless peace;
How rich the gifts-how free the grace!

4 Lord, we accept, with thankful heart,
The hope Thy gracious words impart;
We come with trembling, yet rejoice,
And bless the kind inviting voice.

5 Dear Saviour, let Thy wondrous love
Confirm our faith, our fears remove;
Oh! sweetly influence every breast,
And guide us to eternal rest.

4 The Spirit calls to-day
Yield to His power.
Oh! grieve Him not away-
'Tis mercy's hour.

HASTINGS.

56.

COME, sinner, to the Gospel feast;

come without delay;

For there is room in Jesus' breast
For all who will obey.

2 There's room in God's eternal love
To save thy precious soul;
Room in the Spirit's grace above
To Heal, and make thee whole.
