confiderable Sums of Money have been raised and added thereto by private Contribution :

And whereas the Bridge called Magdalen Bridge, over the River Cherwell, near Magdalen College in the faid University, is in a decayed and very ruinous State; by Reafon whereof and of its Narrownefs, and the Difficulty of Accefs thereto through the faid Parish of Saint Clement, it is very incommodious and dangerous to Travellers:

And whereas the Roads from the faid Bridge, through the feveral Streets in the faid Univerfity and City, to the great Roads lying on the North, South, and West Sides of the faid Univerfity and City, are in many Parts fo very narrow and incommodious, and fo greatly obftructed by Nuisances and Annoyances, as well as by various Encroachments and Projections, as to render the faid Roads inconvenient and dangerous to Travellers :

And whereas the faid Univerfity and City, and the Suburbs thereof, and the Parish of Saint Clement, are not properly cleanfed or lighted, and are much annoyed by Projections and Encroachments, and subject to many Nuisances;

May it therefore please your MAJESTY,

That it may be Enacted; and be it Enacted, by the KING'S MOST EXCELLENT MAJESTY, by and with the Advice and Confent of the Lords Spiritual and Temporal, and Commons in this prefent Parliament affembled, and by the Authority of the fame; that the following Magiftrates and Officers, for the Time being, of the University of Oxford, and of the Colleges and Halls Commif- therein, (To wit) The Vice-Chancellor, his Affeffor, or Deputy in the University Court, all Heads or Governors of Colleges and Halls, the Canons of the Cathedral Church of Christ, the feveral Royal Profeffors, and all other University Profeffors and Prælectors, the Proctors of the University, the Publick Orator, the Bodleian and Radclivian Librarians, the Keepers of the University

hereby appointed Commiffioners for putting this A&t
in Execution.

And be it further Enacted, That it fhall and may be For Eleclawful, to and for the Head or Governor of each College tion of within the faid University, and the Mafters of Arts, Commifand Perfons of fuperior Academical Degree, refident for the Colthe Time being within fuch College, and on the leges. Foundation thereof, to meet together in their Common Dining Hall, or fome other public Place, between the Hours of Nine and Twelve in the Forenoon of the Third Tuesday after the paffing of this Act, or as foon after as conveniently may be, and the major Part of fuch Persons then refident, and there affembled, shall and may proceed to elect One of the Fellows, or Mafters of Arts, or Perfons of fuperior Degree on the Foundation of fuch their refpective College, to be a Commiffioner for fuch refpective College: And in case of an Equality of Votes in the Election of a Commiffioner for any fuch College refpectively, the Head or Governor, or in his Abfence his Deputy, or in their Abfence, the fenior Fellow prefent, of fuch College, fhall have the cafting Voice; and fuch Perfon fo elected fhall and may continue to act and be a Commiffioner for putting in Execution the Powers in this Act contained, during the Time he fhall actually remain a Fellow of fuch College, or on the Foundation thereof; provided that when and as often as any of the faid Commiffioners, to be chofen by their respective Col

leges as aforefaid, fhall happen to die, refign, or refuse to act, or his Fellowship, Studentship, or other Place on the Foundation fhall become vacant, it fhall and may be lawful within One Month after fuch Difqualification, Death, Refignation, Refufal, or Vacancy, for the feveral Voters in the College of which fuch Commiffioner was a Member, to proceed to elect another Commiffioner, in manner above-mentioned, and fo toties quoties, as Occafion fhall be or require.

And be it further Enacted, That the Parishioners in each and every of the faid refpective Parishes beforeCommif- mentioned, having a Right to vote in the Election of Churchwardens, hall and may meet together in the Church or Veftry Room belonging to each Parish refpectively, between the Hours of Nine and Twelve in the Forenoon, on the faid Third Tuesday next after the paffing of this Act, or as foon after as conveniently may be, and the major Part of fuch Parishioners, then and there affembled, fhall and may proceed to the Election of One Perfon to be a Commiffioner as aforefaid, for fuch respective Parish: And that in case of an Equality of Votes in the Election of a Commiffioner for any fuch Parish, the Churchwarden ftanding first upon the Lift of Parish-Officers then prefent, or in cafe no Churchwarden fhall be prefent, the Perfon then present who fhall ftand highest rated to the Poors Rate in the faid Parish, shall have the eafting Voice; and the Name of every fuch Perfon fo elected a Commiffioner for each refpective Parish, fhall be entered in a Book to be provided and kept for that Purpose by each respective Parish, in their public Cheft.

And be it further Enacted, by the Authority aforefaid, That the Perfons fo elected for the faid refpective Parishes, fhall continue Commiffioners until Eafter Tuesday One Thoufand Seven Hundred and Seventyfour, and no longer; and upon the faid Eafter Tuesday in the Year One Thousand Seven Hundred and Seventyfour, or within fourteen Days afterwards, new Commiffioners fhall refpectively be elected in Manner aforefaid, by the faid Parishioners of each and every of the Parishes before mentioned; and that from thenceforth
