At half past 6 P.M. the Packet Ship Thomas P. Cope, which was at sea without a lightning rod was struck by lightning set on fire and destroyed. One of the passengers was suffocated by the smoke when the cabin doors were closed to subdue the flames, the rest of the passengers officers and crew made a narrow escape from death, they were taken off by a vessel which was fell in with before the flames had finished the work of destruction. The Thomas P. Cope when struck was in Lat. 410 15 min. N., Long. 650 West-therefore about 9 degrees of longitude East and 00 33 min. of latitude North of my place of observation. The lightning storm was accompanied by snow when the ship was struck-making allowance for the longitude-the storm traversed the 9 degrees in less than three hours-a rapid movement, it came from the Earthquake at Porto Rico of the 28th. with us to spend the pleasant weather, and recruit
themselves for their journey to a still more southern
