by furnishing the blood with an immediately absorbable combination of Organic Iron and Manganese, increases the oxygen and hæmoglobin carrying power of the red corpuscles and thus nourishes all the tissues of the body. It should be employed in cases of ANÆMIA, CHLOR-ANÆMIA, CHLOROSIS, RACHITIS, NEURASTHENIA, or in BLOOD IMPOVERISHMENT from any cause.

Orphol

(Betanaphtol-Bismuth=
Von Heyden)

A MOST RELIABLE AND EFFICIENT ANTISEPTIC AND
ASTRINGENT FOR THE CASTRO-INTESTINAL TRACT.

Orphol is a neutral, non-caustic and non-poisonous chemical compound composed of 80% of bismuth oxide and 20% of betanaphtol. It is a fawn-colored powder of faintly aromatic taste and odor, and insoluble in water. Experiments made in Professor Nencki's laboratory at the Imperial Institute for Experimental Medicine at St. Petersburg show that its decomposition begins in the stomach and is completed in the small intestine.

Orphol sooths the irritated and inflamed intestinal mucosa, acting, from its slow decomposition, as a continuous and harmless disinfectant. It directly destroys the disease germs and neutralizes their poisons; and after absorption fixes the toxic albumins and favors their elimination. It is free from the dangers of carbolic acid, naphtol, sublimate, etc., and its use obviates the necessity of employing complicated and uncertain diarrhoea and cholera mixtures.

A practical intestinal antisepsis can be effected and maintained with Orphol, and it is indicated in all catarrhal and fermentative gastro-intestinal processes, ptomaine poisoning, gastritis, summer diarrhoea, dysentery, typhoid fever, etc. It agrees with the most delicate stomach, and children take it without difficulty.

Orphol has been extensively and most successfully employed during the past six years. Reprints and abstracts of papers by Drs. R. W. Wilcox and Louis Fischer of New York; D. D. Stewart and Hugo Engel of Philadelphia; E. Chaumier of Tours, and others, will be mailed upon request.

DOSAGE.

For Adults: 25 to 75 grains, or 5 to 15 tablets, daily in divided doses.

For Children: 3 to 5 grains, or to i tablet, every three or four hours on an empty stomach.
Orphol in powder form is supplied in 1-oz. vials only.

Orphol in 5-grain tablets is supplied only in flat, oval vials, containing 50 tablets.

CAUTION TO PHYSICIANS.

Complaints having reached us from physicians that certain mixtures and tablets purporting to contain bismuth betanaphtolate have had a caustic and burning taste, we have found upon analysis that they contain the ordinary irritant naphtol, and not the neutral, tasteless and insoluble chemical compound of Von Heyden. To preclude all possibility of error we would request the profession to prescribe Von Heyden's Betanaphtol-Bismuth under the more distinctive name of "Orphol". We hold that no precaution, however slight, contributing to the absolute purity of antitoxin, can safely be neglected, and we should be false to our trust as purveyors to the medical profession if we did not surround every stage of its preparation with every safeguard known to science.

The medical profession may, therefore, be sure that our Diphtheritic Antitoxin is absolutely free from contamination of any kind; that its entire harmlessness has been demonstrated by physiologic tests so rigid as to leave no basis for doubt, before it is allowed to leave our laboratory; and that each bulb contains the full stated number of antitoxic units.

The manner in which our Special Concentrated diphtheritic antitoxin is put up further conduces to its perfectly aseptic administration, as it is contained in a bulb which in a moment's time can be converted into a simple, powerful hypodermic syringe, sterilized, filled and ready for use.

The reputation of our house for nearly half a century and the large amount of capital we have invested in our Biologic Laboratory make it imperative that our products shall be above suspicion-and so they have been, are now, and shall ever be! The rigidity of our requirements is the best possible guaranty of safety.
