SECT. 1. The qualified voters of the city of Cambridge, Election of Asat their annual meeting for the election of municipal officers, Stat. 1857, first to be held after the passage of this act, shall elect three persons to be Assessors; and the person who receives the highest number of votes, or, in case two or more persons receive an equal number of votes, the person who is senior by age, shall hold the office for three years, and until another is chosen and qualified in his stead; and the person who receives the next highest number of votes, or who is senior by age in the contingency aforesaid, shall hold the office for two years, and until another is chosen and qualified in his stead; and the other person shall hold the office for one year, and until another is chosen and quali

fied in his stead; and at every subsequent election one person shall be chosen to be an Assessor for three years, and until another is chosen and qualified in his stead; and the persons thus chosen Assessors shall constitute the Board of Assessors, and shall exercise the powers, and be subject to the duties and liabilities, of assessors of towns. The qualified voters shall, at the same time, and in like manner, elect such number of Assistant Assessors as the City Council may from time to time determine, and such Assistant Assessors shall hold their office for the term of one year.

SECT. 2. The City Council shall, in the month of January, annually, in convention, and by joint ballot, fill all vacancies that may exist in the Overseers of the Poor, or in the Assessors or Assistant Assessors, by reason of a failure to elect by the inhabitants at their annual meeting. The candidates for filling such vacancies shall be determined in the manner provided in the Constitution of the Commonwealth for filling vacancies in the State Senate. All vacancies in either of said boards of officers, arising from any other cause, may be filled by the City Council in like. manner from the citizens at large.

SECT. 3. The qualified voters of the city, at the annual meeting, shall choose ten persons for a School Committee, three of whom shall be residents of Ward numbered One, four of Ward numbered Two, and three of Ward numbered Three; but whenever the number of Wards shall be increased to four, there shall be chosen two from each Ward and two at large; and whenever a greater number of Wards shall be constituted, there shall be chosen two from each Ward.

SECT. 4. In addition to the election of officers in the month of January, provided for in the "Act in Addition to 'An Act to establish the City of Cambridge,'" approved
