SECT. 3. The Mayor and Aldermen shall appoint one of the three principal officers to be styled "Chief of Police," who shall be appointed a constable of the city, and shall take the oath, and give bond according to law. He shall have precedence and control over all other constables and police officers whenever engaged in the same service, and whenever directed thereto by the Mayor and Aldermen.

SECT. 4. The Chief of Police shall receive all complaints of the officers or inhabitants respecting offences committed against the laws of the Commonwealth, and the Ordinances of the city. He shall institute prosecutions against all of fenders without unnecessary delay, and shall attend to the trial of the same, and shall take proper measures for the conviction of such offenders, whenever the same are discovered by him, or brought to his notice.

SECT. 5. The principal constables or police officers shall enforce and carry into effect to the utmost of their powers all and every of the Ordinances of the city, and orders of the Mayor and Aldermen which shall be in force; they shall obey and execute all the commands of the Mayor and Aldermen in relation to any matter or thing in which the city may be in any wise concerned or interested, and comply with all such regulations as may at any time be prescribed by the Mayor Compensation. and Aldermen; and shall receive such compensation as the City Council shall from time to time determine.

AN ORDINANCE

PROVIDING FOR A DIVISION OF THE CITY OF CAMBRIDGE
INTO FIVE WARDS, AND FOR DETERMINING THE BOUN-
DARIES THEREOF, AND THE NUMBER OF MEMBERS OF
THE COMMON COUNCIL WHICH EACH WARD SHALL BE
ENTITLED TO ELECT.

Be it ordained by the City Council of the City of Cam- Oct. 21, 1857. bridge, as follows:

SECT. 1. The number of the Wards of the city for the Division into next five years shall be five, and said Wards shall be constituted and known as follows:

Ward No. 1. Beginning at the boundary line between Ward No. 1. Cambridge and West Cambridge, on Concord Avenue; thence by the centre of Concord Avenue to a street next northwesterly of the estate of E. S. Dixwell; thence by the centre of said street to Garden Street; thence by the centre of Garden Street to Shepard Street; thence by the centre of Shepard Street to North Avenue; thence by the centre of North Avenue to Sacramento Street; thence by the centre of Sacramento Street to the boundary line between Cambridge and Somerville; thence by said boundary line to a point which would be struck by the central line of Dana Street, if extended northerly to said boundary line; thence by a line to Dana Street, and by the centre of Dana Street to Main Street; thence by the centre of Main Street to Mount Auburn Street; thence by the centre of Mount Auburn Street to Putnam Street; thence by the centre of Putnam Street to Western Avenue; thence by the centre of Western Avenue to the boundary line between Cambridge and Brighton; thence by said boundary line to the boundary line between Cambridge and Watertown; thence by the lastmentioned boundary line to the boundary line between Cambridge and West Cambridge; thence by the last-mentioned boundary line to the point begun at.

Ward No. 2. Beginning at the boundary line between Cambridge and Somerville, at a point which would be struck by the central line of Dana Street if extended northerly to said boundary line; thence by a line to Dana Street, and by the centre of Dana Street to Main Street; thence through the centre of Main Street to Norfolk Street; thence by the centre of Norfolk Street to Washington Street; thence by the centre of Washington Street to the junction of Washington and Main Streets; thence by a line at a right angle southerly to the water; thence by the water to the mouth of Broad Canal; thence by the centre of Broad Canal to North Canal; thence by the centre of North Canal, and northerly, in a line continued therefrom, to the boundary line between Cambridge and Somerville; thence by said boundary line to the point begun at.

Ward No. 3. Beginning at the water, at the mouth of Broad Canal; thence by the centre of Broad Canal to North Canal; thence by the centre of North Canal, and northerly, in a line continued therefrom, to the boundary line between Cambridge and Somerville; thence by said boundary line to the waters of Charles River; thence by the water to the point begun at.

Beginning at the boundary line between Brighton, on Western Avenue; thence through the centre of Western Avenue to Putnam Street; thence through the centre of Putnam Street to Mount Auburn Street; thence through the centre of Mount Auburn Street to Main Street; thence through the centre of Main Street to Norfolk Street; thence through the centre of Norfolk Street to Washington Street; thence through the centre of Washington to the junction of Washington and Main Streets; thence by a line at a right angle southerly to the water; thence by the water to the point begun at.

Ward No. 5. Beginning at the boundary line between Cambridge and West Cambridge, on Concord Avenue;

thence by the centre of Concord Avenue to a street next northwesterly of the estate of E. S. SECT. 2. The Ward herein designated as Ward Number Number of One shall elect three members of the Common Council; the Common Ward designated as Ward Number Two shall elect five members of the Common Council; the Ward designated as Ward Number Three shall elect six members of the Common Council; the Ward designated as Ward Number Four shall elect four members of the Common Council; the Ward designated as Ward Number Five shall elect two members of the Common Council.

SECT. 3. All former Ordinances inconsistent herewith are Repeal. hereby repealed.

AN ORDINANCE

ESTABLISHING THE SALARY OF THE MAYOR OF THE

CITY.

Be it ordained by the City Council of the City of Cam- Dec. 7, 1857. bridge, as follows:

SECT. 1. So much of the Ordinance establishing the Sal- Repeal of foraries of sundry City Officers, adopted December the twentyfourth in the year one thousand eight hundred and fifty-six, as relates to the salary of the Mayor, is hereby repealed.

SECT. 2. From and after the first Monday in January, in the year one thousand eight hundred and fifty-eight, the Salary of the Mayor of the City shall be fifteen hundred dollars annually, payable in equal quarterly payments; which shall be in full for all services rendered by him in his official capacity.

Salary of Chief of Police.

AN ORDINANCE

ESTABLISHING THE SALARY OF THE CHIEF OF POLICE.

Be it ordained by the City Council of the City of Cambridge, as follows : —

From and after the first Monday in January, in the year one thousand eight hundred and fifty-eight, the salary of the Chief of Police shall be eight hundred dollars annually, payable in equal quarterly payments; which shall be in full for all services rendered by him in his official capacity.

Fund to be set apart.

AN ORDINANCE

IN RELATION TO THE FUND TO BE RECEIVED FROM
THE HANCOCK FREE BRIDGE CORPORATION.

Be it ordained by the City Council of the City of Cambridge, as follows:

SECT. 1. The fund of one hundred thousand dollars to be paid to the city of Cambridge by the Hancock Free Bridge Corporation, upon the surrender of the West Boston and Canal Bridges, as provided by Chapter 257 of the Acts of 1857, shall be set apart exclusively for the support and maintenance of those two bridges, and shall be denominated the Bridge Fund.
