He has been, by the English, regarded as the founder of the science of political economy. The French economists, however, of whom Dr. Quesnay was the leader, preceded him, and were the direct source of his doctrines, which he imbibed from them in a long visit to Paris; and the Italians possessed, long before, an almost complete body of writers on the subject, of whom the English still appear, for the most part, ignorant. A new edition of Smith has lately appeared, with a commentary by the author of "England and America compared." After all, it must be said that the additions to his theory of public wealth, by subsequent writers, have been, even when just, rather metaphysical than practical.
