The authorship, after vast controversy (there being about one hundred and twenty different works on the question), rests uncertain; John Gerson and Kempis are, however, the favourites in this literary affray. The main particulars of the history of this remarkable book may be found in Barbier's "Anonymes et Pseudonymes," at the title Imitatio Christi. Charles Butler has written a life of Kempis, London, 1814, 8vo. Stanhope was Dean of Canterbury. Dibdin has given a very pretty illustrated edition. Elzevir, Ruddiman, Barbou, Didot, and Bodoni have printed beautiful editions of the Latin original. The two last, one of Barbou's and Ruddiman's, have followed a disapproved text-Vallart's.
