E it remembered, that on the fifteenth day of August, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and seven, in the thirty-second year of the Independence of the United States of America, Mary Fappan, of said District, has deposited in this office the title of a book, the right whereof she claims as proprietor, in the words following, to wit: "Sermons on important Subjects, by the late Rev. DAVID TAPPAN, D. D. "Hollis Professor of Divinity in the University at Cambridge. To which are prefixed a Biographical Sketch of the Author; "and a Sermon preached at his Funeral by Dr. Holmes." 66 In conformity to the Act of the Congress of the United States, "intituled, “An Act for the encouragement of learning, by se"curing the copies of maps, charts, and books, to the authors "and proprietors of such copies, during the times therein men"tioned" and also to an Act, intitled, “An Act supplementato an Act, intitled, An Act for the encouragement of learn"ing, by securing the copies of maps, charts, and books, to the "authors and proprietors of such copies, during the times there" in mentioned; and extending the benefits thereof to the arts "of designing, engraving, and etching historical and other "prints." ry WILLIAM S. THE Discourses, which constitute this volume, were selected from the manucripts of the author, since his decease, by a number of his friends, who carefully revised, and in most instances transcribed them for the press. As these Sermons were not written for publication, some verbal and other minute alterations became necessary previously to their appearance in print; these the editors have taken the liberty to make; but in no instance have they intentionally changed the meaning of the author. The editors are responsible for the selection of these discourses, and the printers for the correctness and neatness of the dress in which they appear. In respect both to the matter and the execution, a hope is entertained, that the patrons of the work will be gratified. Short Memoirs of the Life of the Author are prefixed to this volume, containing facts and information not to be found in Dr. Holmes' discourse delivered at his funeral, which is prefixed to this volume. |
