Mr. SCHAUSS. I would never have any reason to because nearly all of my ventures are joint ventures.

Mr. ATKISSON. The question I asked you is this. Whether or not---

Mr. SCHAUSS. No; I never have.

Mr. ATKISSON. I will ask the staff to put in front of you a document which purports to be some sort of map.

Mr. Moss. Without objection that will be placed in the record at this point.

[The document referred to follows:]

[Witness examines the document and counsel examines it.] Mr. ATKISSON. I will ask you if you recognize it. Is that your handwriting on that map, Mr. Schauss?

It looks like the handwriting on the checks we were looking at a moment ago.

Down in the left-hand corner we have the language, "Don't put any in this hole." Then it says, "Last hole West" up on the left and on the bottom there are four little arrows pointing at holes. It says, "these four piles also. Some in the big cutting pile."

Up in the right hand corner there is an arrow pointing to a hole. It says, "Put just a small amount in this cutting pile at the same level."

Put what, Mr. Schauss?

Mr. SCHAUSS. I would like an explanation of it.

Mr. ATKISSON. That is what I would like.

Mr. SCHAUSS. I really would.

Mr. ATKISSON. Is that your handwriting?

Mr. Moss. Let me say, now, that you have before you a document. We seek from you the explanation of it.

Mr. SCHAUSS. I have no idea about it.

Mr. ATKISSON. Is that your handwriting?
Mr. SCHAUSS. It looks bad enough; yes.
Mr. ATKISSON. What did you mean?

Mr. SCHAUSs. I have no idea.

Mr. ATKISSON. You say you do not recognize the document?
Mr. SCHAUSS. I certainly do not recognize the document.

Mr. ATKISSON. It would appear to have been the yellow page and the Xerox shows the lines from the typical legal pad margin. Does that refresh your memory at all?

Mr. SCHAUSS. I have no idea. Unless it is that one time somebody salted some cuttings on me and I was drawing a diagram showing them an example. I do not know.

Mr. ATKISSON. That is why you issued the command, Put just a small amount in this cutting pile?

Mr. SCHAUSs. I have no idea what it would be or where or for what purpose or who.

Mr. ATKISSON. Mr. Chairman, I have no further questions.

Mr. Moss. Mr. Luken?

Mr. LUKEN. I have no questions.

Mr. Moss. Mr. Gore?

Mr. GORE. Is salting a common practice in the uranium claimstaking business?

Mr. SCHAUSS. It serves absolutely no purpose. I got taken in by it one time. I got taken in good.

Mr. GORE. Is it done commonly?

Mr. SCHAUSS. No. You have no reason to because most companies-first of all, if you have a radioactive hole and say it is, then they want to see the log. You show them the log. Most of the time they will come out and offset the hole or even drill right through the hole and log the hole themselves. They just do not accept this type of garbage.

However, I did get duped into a deal many years ago. It cost me a considerable amount of money.

Mr. GORE. It served the purpose in that instance.

Mr. SCHAUSS. Do you want me to explain?

Mr. GORE. Well, you stated that it serves no purpose and you say that it is not a common practice.

Mr. SCHAUSS. I would not say it is a common practice. It served their purpose. They got the money out of me and the way it was handled I walked right into a trap.

Mr. GORE. You did not drill into the hole?

Mr. SCHAUSS. I had a group of claims, and we found some ore on it. I thought certainly the ore trend went off of this end and that end and another party had the claims. So one day he said that he had a drilling rig and he wanted to borrow my babble probe. He was going out to do some drilling.

I said, "Fine." A few days later he brought the probe back to me and said it was not working, but he went ahead and did the drilling anyway. I went out there with my scintilator and put my scintilator on some of the cutting piles down there where I thought the ore would be. They were hotter than a June bride in a feather bed.

I thought, "Oh, boy, that does go through there."

So a few weeks later in talking with him over a beer and so forth, I mentioned that maybe I ought to buy those claims. I had a homestake in my other claims. They suggested it.

So, I made a deal and I bought the claims.

Mr. GORE. Why could you not make some money the same way? Mr. SCHAUSS. Because I am basically not in the business of selling claims or staking them. I prefer to do my prospecting and my geology and my exploration and staking claims for good, real valid reasons. I do a certain amount and then go into a joint venture like we did with Minerals Exploration, for instance. They have discovered a fine, big ore body and they are building a mill on it.

Mr. GORE. Going to another subject, you stated earlier that in the context of saying that you were, in fact, doing exploratory work on these claims as required by law, you stated that the Whiskey Gap Mining Co. and Crazy Woman Creek Mining Co. both had drilling rigs.

I would like to insert in the record, Mr. Chairman, the corporation reports of both of these corporations [indicating] that list the assets of the corporations. There is not a drilling rig――

Mr. Moss. Without objection, the request will be agreed to. So ordered.
