Any duty give me pain, Our Father and our love;

If I knew a Saviour's love? His care shall guard life’s fleeting hours, 3 When I turn mine eyes within Then waft our souls above.

O how dark, and vain, and wild! 4 There shall we see his face,

Prone to unbelief and sin, And never, never sin

Can I deem myself thy child ? There, from the rivers of his grace,

4 Yet I mourn my stubbom will, Drink endless pleasures in,

Find my sin a grief and thrall: 5 Yes, and before we rise

Should I grieve for what I feel, To that immortal state,

If I did not love at all? The thoughts of such amazing bliss

5 Could I love thy saints to meet, Should constant joys create.

Choose the ways I once abhorr'd 6 Children of grace have found

Find at times the promise sweet, Glory begun below :

If I did not love thee, Lord ? Celestial fruits on earthly ground, 6 Saviour ! let me love thee more, From faith and hope may grow.

If I love at all, I pray: 7 The hill of Sion yields

If I have not lov'd before,
A thousand sacred sweets,

Fielp me to begin to-day
Before we reach the heavenly fields,
Or walk the golden streets

PRAISE. 8 Then let our songs abound,

HYMN 154.

(L. M.)
Psalm c.
EFORE Jehovah's awful throne,
Ye nations, bow with sacred joy;
Know that the Lord is God alone;
He can create, and he destroy.

Songs of Praise.

(III. 1.)

SONGS of praise the angels sang,
Heaven with hallelujahs rang,
When Jehovah's work begun,
When he spake and it was done.

2 Songs of praise awoke the morn
When the Prince of peace was born;
Songs of praise arose, when he
Captive led captivity.

3 Heaven and earth must pass away;
Songs of praise shall crown that day:

God will make new heavens and earth:

Songs of praise shall hail their birth.
4 And shall man alone be dumb
Till that glorious kingdom come?
No-the church delights to raise
Psalms and hymns, and songs of praise
5 Saints below, with heart and voice,
Still in songs of praise rejoice;
Learning here by faith and love,
Songs of praise to sing above.
6 Borne upon their latest breath,
Songs of praise shall conquer death;
Then, amidst eternal joy,
Songs of praise their powers employ.

HYMN 156. (C. M.)
ATHER, whate'er of earthly bliss
Thy sov'reign will denies,
Accepted at thy throne, let this,
My humble prayer arise-

2 Give me a calm and thankful heart,
From every murmur free;
The blessings of thy grace impart,

2 His sov'reign pow'r, without our aid, Made us of clay, and form'd us men; And when like wand'ring sheep we

And make me live to thee:

3 Let the sweet hope that thou art mine
My life and death attend,

Thy presence through my journey shine,
And crown my journey's end.

HYMN 157. (L. M.)

He brought us to his fold again. [stray'd, BE still, my heart! these anxious cares

3 We are his people, we his care,
Our souls, and all our mortal frame;
What lasting honours shall we rear,
Almighty Maker, to thy name?
4 We'll crowd thy gates with thankful

songs,

High as the heaven our voices raise;
And earth, with her ten thousand
tongues,

Shall fill thy courts with sounding praise.
5 Wide as the world is thy command,
Vast as eternity thy love;
Firm as a rock thy truth must stand,
When rolling years shall cease to move.

To thee are burdens, thorns, and
snares;

They cast dishonour on thy Lord,
And contradict his gracious word.
2 Brought safely by his hand thus far,
Why wilt thou now give place to fear?
How canst thou want if he provide,
Or lose thy way with such a guide?
3 When first before his mercy-seat,
Thou didst to him thy all commit;
He gave thee warrant from that hour,
To trust his wisdom, love, and power.
4 Did ever trouble yet befall,
And he refuse to hear thy call?

And has he not his promise past, On him I lean, who, not in vain,
That thou shalt overcome at last? Experienc'd ev'ry human pain;
5 Though rough and thorny be the road, He feels my griefs, he sees my fears,
It leads thee home apace to God;

And counts and treasures up my tears. Then count thy present trials small, 2 If aught should tempt my soul to stray For heaven will make amends for all. From heavenly wisdom's narrow way,

To fly the good I would pursue, IN AFFLICTION. Or do the ill I would not do ; HYMN 158.

(C. M.)

Still he, who felt temptation's pow'r,

Shall guard me in that dang’rous hour HEAR, gracious God! my huinble

To thee I breathe my sighs; [moan, 3 When vexing thoughts within me rise, When will the mournful night be gone? And, sore dismay'd, my spirit dies; When shall my joys arise ?

Then he, who nce vouchsaf'd to bear 2 Yet, though my soul in darkness Shall

sweetly soothe, shall gently dry

The sick’ning anguish of despair, Thy promise is my stay; [mourns, The throbbing heart, the streaming eye. Here would I rest till light returns :

Thy presence makes my day. 4 When sorrowing o'er some stone I 3 Come, Lord, and with celestial peace which covers all that was a friend,

bend, Relieve my aching heart; O smile, and bid my sorrows cease,

And from his voice, his hand, his sinile, And all their gloom depart.

Divides me for a little while; 4 Then shall my drooping spirit rise,

Thou, Saviour, seest the tears I shed,

For thou didst weep o'er Laz’rus dead. And bless thy healing rays,

5 And changethese deep complainingsighs 5. And, oh! when I have safely past For songs of sacred praise.

Through ev'ry conflict but the last,

Still, still unchanging, watch beside

1 And see thy glory, face to face. 2 But rising griefs distress my soul,

But thou hast made me feel thy roil! And tears on tears successive roll;

And turn'd my soul to thee, my God. For many an evil voice is near,

2 What though it pierc'd my fainting To chide my wo, and mock my fear; heart, And silent mem'ry weeps alone I bless thy hand that caus'd the smart; O'er bours of peace and gladness flown. It taught my tears awhile to flow,

But sav'd me from eternal wo! 3 For I have walk'd the happy round That 'circles Zion's holy ground, 30, hadst thou left me unchastis'd, And gladly swell'd the choral lays, Thy precepts I had still despised, 'That" hymn'd my great Redeemer's And still the snare in secret laid praise,

Morning Hymn.

AWAKE, my soul, and with the sun
Thy daily course of duty run;
Shake off dull sloth, and early rise
To pay thy morning sacrifice.

2 When to heaven's great and glorious 14 O'er earth, when shades of ev❜ning My morning sacrifice I bring; [King! steal, And, mourning o'er my guilt and shame, Ask mercy. Saviour, in thy name; My conscience sprinkle with thy blood, And be my advocate with God. 3 As ev'ry day thy mercy spares Will bring its trials and its cares; O Saviour, till my life shall end, Be thou my counsellor and friend: Teach me thy precepts, all divine, And be thy pure example mine. 4 When pain transfixes ev'ry part, Or languor settles at the heart; When on my bed, diseas'd, oppress'd, I turn, and sigh, and long for rest; O great Physician! see my grief, And grant thy servant sweet relief. 5 Should poverty's destructive blow Lay all my worldly comforts low; And neither help nor hope appear, My steps to guide, my heart to cheer; Lord, pity and supply my need, . For thou, on earthi, wast poor indeed. 6 Should Providence profusely pour Its varied blessings on my store; O keep me from the ills that wait On such a seeming prosp'rous state: From hurtful passions set me free, And humbly may I walk with thee. 7 When each day's scenes and labours close,

And weari'd nature seeks repose,
With pard'ning mercy richly bless'd,
Guard me, my Saviour, while I rest:
And, each morning sun shall rise,
O lead me onward to the skies.

8 And, at my life's last setting sun,
My conflicts o'er, my labours done,
Jesus, thy heavenly radiance shed,
To cheer and bless my dying bed;
And, from death's gloom my spirit raise,
To see thy face and sing thy praise.

My soul, adoring, turns to thee! Thee, self-abas'd in mortal guise,

And wrapt in shades of death for me.]
2 On thee my waking raptures dwell,
When crimson gleams the east adorn,
Thee, victor of the grave and hell;

Thee, source of life's eternal morn.
3 When noon her throne in light arrays, 2
To thee, my soul triumphant springs;
Thee, thron'd in glory's endless blaze,
Thee, Lord of lords, and King of kings.

2 Redeem thy mispent time that's past;
Live this day, as if 'twere thy last:
T' improve thy talents take due care;
'Gainst the great day thyself prepare."
3 Let all thy converse be sincere,
Thy conscience as the noon-day clear;
Think how the all-seeing God, thy ways
And all thy secret thoughts surveys.
4 Wake, and lift up thyself, my heart,
And with the angels bear thy part;
Who all night long unwearied sing,
Glory to thee, eternal King.

May your devotion ine inspire;
That I like you my age may spend,
Like you may on my God attend

Have all day long my God in sight;
Perform like you my Maker's will:

Morning.
ARISE, my soul! with rapture rise!
And, fill'd with love and fear, adore
The awful Sov'reign of the skies,
Whose mercy lends me one day more.
And may this day, indulgent Power!
Not idly pass, nor fruitless be;
But may each swiftly flying hour
Still nearer bring my soul to Thee!

2 Forgive me, Lord, for thy dear Son, :
The ills that I this day have done;
1
That with the world, myself, and thee,
I, ere I sleep, at peace may be.

3 Teach me to live, that I may dread
The grave as little as my bed
Teach me to die, that so I may
Triumphing rise at the last day.

And with sweet sleep mine eyelids
Sleep, that may me more vig'rous make,
To serve my God, when I awake.
5 When in the night I sleepless lie,
My soul with heavenly thoughts supply:
Let no ill dreams disturb my rest,
No powers of darkness me molest.
6 O when shall I, in endless day,
For ever chase dark sleep away,
And hymns divine with angels sing
Glory to thee, eternal King!

7 Praise God, from whom all blessings flow,

Praise him, all creatures here below;
Praise him above, y' angelic host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

HYMN 169.

(L. M.)

Evening. REAT God! to thee my ev'ning song With humble gratitude I raise: O let thy mercy tune my tongue, And fill my heart with lively praise 2 My days unclouded as they pass, And ev'ry onward rolling hour, Are monuments of wondrous grace, And witness to thy love and power. 3 And yet this thoughtless, wretched Too oft regardless of thy love, [heart, Ungrateful, can from thee depart,

3 But can it be? that Power divine

Is thron'd in light's unbounded blaze;
And countless worlds and angels join
To swell the glorious song of praise:
4 And will he deign to lend an ear,
When I, poor abject mortal, pray?
Yes, boundless goodness! he will hear,
Nor cast the meanest wretch away.
5 Then let me serve thee all my days,
And may my zeal with years increase:
For pleasant, Lord, are all thy ways,
And all thy paths are paths of peace.
(C. M.)

HYMN 166.
Morning.
To thee let my first off'rings rise,
Whose sun creates the day,
Swift as his gladd'ning influence flies,
And spotless as his ray.

2 This day, thy fav'ring hand be nigh,
So oft vouchsaf'd before;
Still may it lead, protect, supply,
And I that hand adore.

3 If bliss thy providence impart,
For which, resign'd, I pray,
Give me to feel a cheerful heart,
And grateful homage pay.

4 Affliction should thy love intend,
As vice or folly's cure,
Patient to gain that gracious end,
May I the means endure.

5 Be this and every future day
Still wiser than the past,
And when I all my life survey,
May grace sustain at last.
(III. 1.)

HYMN 167.
Morning.

NOW the shades of night are gone;
Now the morning light is come;
Lord, may we be thine to-day,.
Drive the shades of sin away.
2 Fill our souls with heavenly light,
Banish doubt and clear our sight;
In thy service, Lord, to-day,
May we labour, watch and pray.

3 Keep our haughty passions bound;
Save us from our foes around;
Going out and coming in
Keep us safe from ev'ry sin.

4 When our work of life is past,
O receive us then at last;

Night and sin will be no more,
When we reach the heavenly shore.
HYMN 168
(L. M.)

Evening Hymn.
LORY to thee, my God, this night,
For all the blessings of the light:
Keep me. O keep me, King of kings,
Under thine own Almighty wings.

And from the path of duty rove.

4 Seal my forgiveness in the blood
Of Christ, my Lord; his name alone
I plead for pardon, gracious God,

And kind acceptance at thy throne.
5 With hope in him mine eyelids close,
With sleep refresh my feeble frame;
Safe in thy care may I repose,

And wake with praises to thy Name
HYMN 170.
.(C. M.)

Evening.

NOW from the altar of our hearts,

Let flames of love arise;
Assist us, Lord, to offer up
Our ev'ning sacrifice.

2 Minutes and mercies multipli'd
Have made up all this day;

Minutes came quick, but mercies were
More swift, more free than they
