LOVE.

BY JAMES KNOX.

What is love? It is a fairy
Vision, deck'd with flowers gay,
Fraught with figures light and airy,
But which quickly fade away.
'Tis a sun-lit cloud-a vapour,
Adverse winds blow-it is fled;
'Tis a faint and glimmering taper,
By a touch extinguished.
Though 'tis prated of by many,
And exalted to the skies,
Yet 'tis never known to any,
But it causes heart-felt sighs.

Then avoid him, gentle maidens,

Dread his looks-his lightest smiles;
They may seem with pleasure laden,
But they are deceitful wiles.

CONUNDRUMS.-BUDGET IX.

"D'ye give it up?"

13. Why may a tallow chandler be said to be the worst and most unfortunate of men?

14. What does a stone become in water?

15. What is that which is above all human imperfections, and yet shelters the weakest and wisest, as well as the wickedest, of all mankind?

16. Why are dissenters like vermin?

17. I'm all enigma, ne'er was understood;

Some call me evil-some the greatest good.

Under my power some curse, some kiss the rod;
Some call me devil, and some demi-god.

The world's my play-ground, and mankind my toys;
Kings, queens, lords, ladies, young,
old men, and boys.

From sweet fifteen to impotent fourscore,
They burn and pine, frisk, drivel, and adore;
E'en with the lowest sporting, though a god,
I tame the boor, and animate the clod.
