AMERICAN RAILROAD JOURNAL,
Established January 1, 1831.

[blocks in formation]

The AMERICAN RAILROAD JOURNAL is published weekly by J. H. SCHULTZ & CO., at No. Spruce Street, New York, at $5 per annum.

It has been published nearly THIRTY YEARS, and its files contain the HISTORY OF ALL THE RAILROADS IN AMERICA, their Cost of Construction, Capital, Indebtedness, Earnings, Expenses, Dividends, Mileage, Equipment, &c., making a valuable collection for reference, which should find a place in all private and public libraries. The Statistical, Financial, and Legal Departments of the Journal, are fully sustained, furnishing a weekly epitome of transactions in railroad matters very valua ble to all those dealing in Stocks, Bonds, Equipments, Iron, &c., &c.

Its columns also present the BEST ADVERTISING MEDIUM for articles of which Railroad Companies or Machinists are the purchasers; as it circulates among all the Railroad Companies in the country, and their officers; the manufacturers of engines and machinery, machinists' tools, cars, turntables, and other equipments; bankers, brokers, and dealers in stocks and securities, both in this country and in Europe; contractors, engineers and surveycrs: manufacturers cf engineering and surveying instruments, &c. Its readers are, therefore, of that class of people who are, more or less, either directly or indirectly interested in railroads.

No railroad man CAN AFFORD to be without it, nor can any enterprising merchant who looks for railroad pat ronage, consult his best interest without ADVERTISING in it. The proprietors are aware that many affect to believe that advertising does no good, because they are unable to trace any particular transaction to any particular advertisement; they are also aware that vegetation can trace its growth to no particular drop of rain or ray of sunshine; but it is no less true that WITHOUT rain and sunshine it would fail to flourish. The terms for adver tising are $1.50 per line, per annum, for the space occupied.

Nothing more clearly illustrates the progress of the United States in territory and population than the growth of the railroad system, as shown by our new RAILROAD MAP. Twelve years ago, there were only 117 lines, comprising but little more than 6,000 miles of railroad in operation, of which more than one-half, or over 3,000 miles, were in the four States of Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia, and but 10 lines of 665 miles in length, to the north and west of the Ohio river. The Map represents some 420 distinct lines, comprising more than 30,000 miles of completed road, of which more than one-fourth, or nearly 8,000 miles are located in the four States above mentioned, and fully 10,000 miles in the States to the north and west of the Ohio; in addition to which there are upwards of 2,500 miles in progress, and 15,000 in contemplation-making a total of nearly 50,000 miles of Railroad in operation, progress, or projected in the United States. All the roads are very clearly represented on the Map; and the distinction between roads completed, and those in progress and projected, is plainly marked. Each state is Colored, or Cutlined, as suits the taste of the purchaser. It is also a County Map, showing the Counties, as well as the States, through which each road passes. The names and boundaries of all the Counties are given; and where each County is Colored, one can see at a glance the region through which every road passes, and ascertain the precise location of any described lot of land, and its distance from the nearest line of Railroad, and also from a market-important considerations in the determination of its value. Every city or town of any considerable importance, upon the line of each road, is also given, thus making it useful to the traveler, as well as to the engineer and financier. It is an indispensable accompaniment to the JOURNAL, and is intrinsically valuable, as a map of the physical condition and progress of the United States. No correct idea can be formed of any road, unless a person has before him a good MAP to illustrate its position and relations. A copy of the Pocket Edition of this Map we are now sending, free of postage, to each of our subscribers, upon receipt of remittances from them in payment of their subscriptions up to and including the current year.
