Farewell Orders to the Armies of the United
States, 2 November, 1783
The armies of the United States being about to
be dissolved, the Commander-in-Chief takes leave of
them; their object attained much earlier than they
had reason to expect; their prospect of happiness
is unexcelled; good soldiers should be good citizens;
the public cannot fail to do them justice; exhorts
them to strengthen the union, and commends them
for their past conduct.
Congratulates Congress on the favorable termina-
tion of the war, and retires from public life.
