CHAPTER 42. such indebtednass shall be authorized by any such district meeting and consummated by the board, then in that case it shall be the duty of said board to levy annually a tax on the taxable property of the district to pay the interest on such loan, and also to levy a tax or taxes on the property of said district to pay the principal as it shall become due by the terms and conditions of their contracts.

Repealed.

§ 29. All acts and parts of acts contravening the provisions of this act is hereby repealed.

§ 30. This act shall take effect and be in force from and after its passage and approval. Approved February 24, 1859.

Amendment.

CHAPTER 42.

AN ACT to amend an act entitled "An act to incorporate the First Congregational Society of the town of Milwaukee." Approved February 22, 1845.

The people of the State of Wisconsin, represented in Senate and Asesmbly, do enact as follows:

SECTION 1. That the act to incorporate the first Congregational society in the town of Milwaukee, approved February 22d, 1845, be and the same hereby is so amended as to permit and authorize said first congregational society to acquire, hold, possess, enjoy, sell and convery property, both real and personal, Provided, That the annual income thereof shall not exceed six thousand dollars.

CHAPTER 43.

AN ACT to alter and establish the State road from Chilton to Menasha, and to provide for improving the same.

The people of the State of Wisconsin, represented in Senate and Assembly, do enact as follows:

CHAPTER 43.

State road.

SECTION 1. That Asaph Green, James Robinson, C. Commissioners P. Clinton, Henry Hewit and John H. Fuss, be and to improve they are hereby appointed commissioners to alter, establish and improve the State road from Chilton to Menasha, and for that purpose they, or a majority of them may meet at such time and place as they may ap point, notice thereof being given by publication in the "Chilton Times," and "Menasha Conservator," ten days previous thereto, and proceed to view and determine the

same.

2. For the purpose of improving said road the Expense of imSupervisors of the county of Calumet and of each town, provement. being instructed thereto by the people of said town, and the trustees of each village on the line of said road are hereby authorized to appropriate such sum or sums of money as they from time to time may deem advisable for the improvement of said road which said money shall be paid over to said commissioners in payment for work done, or to be done on said road, in such time and manner as may be provided by contract between said commissioners or a majority of them, and said super

visors or trustees.

§ 3. For the purpose of more fully carrying out the Contracts. authority hereinbefore granted said commissioners and supervisors, or trustees, as the case may be, are hereby authorized to enter into any contract or contracts on such terms as they may deem for the best interests of said road.

CHAPTER 44.

AN ACT to amend an act to incorporate the Milwaukee Gas Light Company.

The people of the State of Wisconsin, represented in Senate and Assembly, do enact as follows:

SECTION 1. Section two of the act of which this is amendatory is hereby amended and modified by adding at the end thereof these words, to wit: "Provided, always, That at any time the board of directors for the time being may, and they are hereby authorized, by resolution, which shall be spread upon the records of the company, to add to the number of the directors of said company any number, so that the whole number of directors shall not in any case exceed nine." From and after the adoption and recording of such resolutioin all the provisions of the act of which this is amendatory thereof, relating to the board of directors provided for in said original act, shall relate and apply to the board so increased by resolution under this act. $ 2. This act shall take effect from and after its passage.

AN ACT to extend the time for the collection of taxes in the city of Portage,

The people of the State of Wisconsin, represented in Senate and Assembly, do enact as follows:

SECTION 1. The time for the collection of taxes in ment of taxes the city of Portage, levied for the year 1858, is hereby extended to the first Monday in April next, and return thereof shall be made to the county treasurer on or before the time specified in this section. CHAPTER 46.

AN ACT to change the time for the election of City and Ward Officers in
Milwaukee.

The people of the State of Wisconsin, represented in Senate
and Assembly, do enact as follows:

SECTION 1. The election of city and ward officers for Election postthe city of Milwaukee, which is now by law required poned. to be held on the first Tuesday of March, is hereby postponed until the first Tuesday of April, and all the elective officers of said city now in office, shall hold their respective offices until their successors shall be elected and qualified, as required by the laws regulating said city.

§ 2. This act shall take effect from and after its passage.

CHAPTER 47.

AN ACT to amend an act to incorporate the Mutual Fire Insurance Company of the City of Janesville.

The people of the State of Wisconsin, represented in Senate and Assembly, do enact as follows:

SECTION 1. The first annual election for directors of Election of Dithis company shall be held on the first Monday of rectors. April next, at the office of the company in the city of Janesville, and all succeeding elections shall be annually held at the same place and on the same day.

AN ACT to legalize the acts of John B. Vanpelt as Treasurer of School District No. 9, of the towns of Baraboo, Fairfield and Greenfield, in Sauk county.

The people of the State of Wisconsin, represented in Senate and Assembly, do enact as follows:

SECTION 1. The acts of John B. Vanpelt, as treasurer of school district number nine, of the towns of Baraboo, Fairfield and Greenfield, in the county of Sauk, be, and they are hereby declared legal.

2. This act shall take effect and be in force from and after its passage.

CHAPTER 49.

AN ACT to incorporate the Newport Bridge Company.

The people of the State of Wisconsin, represented in Senate and Assembly, do enact ae follows:

SECTION 1. That Stewart Blood, Abraham Vanderpool, Jacob S. Van Vechten, William Tweeddale and such other persons as may become associated with them for the purpose of building a bridge as provided by this act, are hereby created a body corporate by the name of the Newport Bridge Company, and by that name may sue and be sued, plead and be impleaded in all courts and places, contract and be contracted with, may have a common seal and alter the same at pleasure; and shall have power to purchase, hold, and transfer real and personal estate to the value of fifteen thousand dollars; and shall have all other powers and franchises
