INTRODUCTION. This Compilation contains the General Regulations and Orders in force, for the Discipline, interior Economy, and Payment of the Bombay Army, as promulgated from the earliest period on record up to the Ist of January 1824; including also those referable to His Majes ty's Troops on the Establishment, as issued by the local Authorities in India :—the whole arranged under the respective Heads of Service to which they immediately relate, and by a strict observance to the connexion of each subject. The Code is divided into Sections, which are alphabetically and numerically placed; and each Section sub-divided into Articles, in view to afford the required facility of future reference or quotation. The occasional Numbers prefixed to the Paragraphs of Letters from the Hon'ble Court of Directors, or to the Clauses of any special Regulations, are indicated by Roman Numerals to distinguish them from the Numbers of the Articles of each Section, which are denoted by Figures. The date and authority, and also the original style or diction of every Order, are invariably preserved; omitting, however, all official preamble, or personal detail, not absolutely requisite to enforce or explain the general tenor of each Regulation; and where any further Rules may exist on particular points, in other parts of the Work, referential Notes are given thereto, by which repetition is avoided. The Regimental Pay and Allowances of every branch of the Service, both in Garrison and in the Field, are separately shewn by distinct Tables, compiled according to the present rates granted to each Rank; and in the Column of Remarks affixed thereto, the Dates of Authority for the several Items, are also recorded, in view to obviate the necessity, in most instances, of retaining the numerous Orders which have from time to time been issued, adjusting the same. The Pay and Allowances of every description, appertaining to the King's Troops serving at Bombay, are similarly specified under their distinet Head. |
