THE LORD'S DAY. C.M. 816 The Sabbath was made for man.— 1 WE Mark 2, 27. THEN the worn spirit wants repose, How sweet to hail the evening's close, 2 How sweet to hail the early dawn When first that soul-reviving morn 3 Sweet day! thine hours too soon will 817 S.M. [peace, Seek those things which are above. ISE, heart! thy Lord arose 2 3 4 With the first morning ray; Leave far below thy cares and woes; Rise! with a spirit's love, Follow the Master's way, And seek the things that are above; Mount in the holy light; Up! to the calm serene; To heavenly places take thy flight Ascend where angels soar! Pray with them side by side, And, with the white-robed church, adore Thy Saviour glorified S.M. 818 4 day in Thy courts is better than a thousand.-Ps. 84, 10. 1 WELCOME, sweet day of rest, That saw the Lord arise; Welcome, to this reviving breast, 2 The King Himself comes near, 4 Where my dear God hath been, My willing soul would stay And sit and sing herself away L.M. 819 God blessed the seventh day.-Gen. 2, 3. 1 ANOTHER six days' work is done, Another Sabbath is begun; Return, my soul, enjoy thy rest, 2 Come, bless the Lord, whose love assigns So sweet a rest to wearied minds; And gives this day the food of seven. 8 O that our thoughts and thanks may rise. As grateful incense to the skies; And draw from heaven that sweet repose Which none but he that feels it knows. 4 This heavenly calm within the breast, Is the dear pledge of glorious rest, Which for the church of God remains, The end of cares, the end of pains. 5 With joy, great God, Thy works we view, In various scenes, both old and new; With praise we think on mercies past; With hope we future pleasures taste. 6 In holy duties let the day, In holy pleasures pass away; How sweet a Sabbath thus to spend, C.M. 820 The Son of Man is Lord also of the 1 Sabbath.-Mark 2, 28. LORD of the Sabbath, Thee we praise In concert with the blest; Who, joyful, in harmonious lays 2 Thus, Lord, while we remember Thee, We blest and happy grow; In hymns of praise we learn to be 3 On this glad day a brighter scene By God, the Eternal Word, than when 4 He rises, who our pardon bought "Twas great to speak the world from nought, "Twas greater to redeem ! C.M. 821 This is the day which the Lord hath 1 THIS made.-Ps. 118, 24. HIS is the day the Lord hath made, Let heaven rejoice, let earth be glad, 2 To-day He rose and left the dead, 3 Hosanna to the anointed King, Help us, O Lord! descend and bring 4 Blest be the Lord who comes to men Who comes in God His Father's name, To save our sinful race. 5 Hosanna, in the highest strains The church on earth can raise : The highest heavens in which He reigns shall give Him nobler praise. C.M. 822 He is risen from the dead.-Matt. 1 BLES 28, 7. LEST morning, whose young dawn: ing rays Beheld our rising God: That saw Him triumph o'er the dust, And leave His dark abode ! 2 In the cold prison of a tomb Till the revolving skies had brought 3 Hell and the grave unite their force 4 To Thy great name, Almighty Lord, 5 Salvation and immortal praise Let heaven, and earth, and rocks, and seas, With glad hosannas ring. REAT Creator, who this day From Thy perfect work didst rest; By the souls that own Thy sway, Hallowed be its hours and blest; Cares of earth aside be thrown, This day given to heaven alone. 2 Saviour, who this day didst break The dark prison of the tomb, Bid my slumbering soul awake, Shine through all its sin and gloom; Let me, from my bonds set free, Rise from sin and live to Thee. 3 Blessed Spirit, Comforter, Sent this day from Christ on high; |
