4 Though I have grieved Thy Spirit, Lord,
His help and comfort still afford;
And let a wretch come near Thy throne,
To plead the merits of Thy Son.

5 A broken heart, my God, my King!
Is all the sacrifice I bring;

The God of grace will ne'er despise
A broken heart for sacrifice.

6 O may Thy love inspire my tongue,
Salvation shall be all my song,

And all my powers shall join to bless The Lord, my Strength and Righteous

ness.

383 God be merciful to me a sinner.—

1 WIT

Luke 18, 13.

TITH broken heart and contrite sigh, A trembling sinner, Lord, I cry; Thy pardoning grace is rich and free, O God, be merciful to me.

2 I smite upon my troubled breast,

With deep and conscious guilt opprest;
Christ and His cross my only plea,
O God, be merciful to me.

3 Far off I stand with tearful eyes,
Nor dare uplift them to the skies;
But Thou dost all my anguish see,
O God, be merciful to me.

4 Nor alms, nor deeds that I have done, Can for a single sin atone;

To Calvary alone I flee;

O God, be merciful to me.

5 And when, redeemed from sin and hell,
With all the ransomed throng I dwell,
My raptured song shall ever be,
God has been merciful to me.

384 Shew us Thy mercy, O Lord, and grant us Thy salvation.-Ps. 85,7.

1 LORD! at Thy feet we sinners lie,
And knock at mercy's door:

With heavy heart and downcast eye,
Thy favour we implore.

2 On us the vast extent display
Of Thy forgiving love;

Take all our heinous guilt away;
This heavy load remove.

3 Tis mercy-mercy we implore;
We would Thy pity move:
Thy grace is an exhaustless store,
And Thou Thyself art Love.

4 Oh! for Thine own, for Jesus' sake,
Our numerous sins forgive:

Thy grace our rocky hearts can break,
Heal us, and bid us live.

5 Thus melt us down, thus make us bend,

And Thy dominion own;
Nor let a rival more pretend
To repossess Thy throne.

C.M.

385 only acknowledge thine iniquity.

10

-Jer. 3, 13.

LORD, turn not Thy face away
From them that lowly lie,
Lamenting sore their sinful life,
With tears and bitter cry.

2 Thy mercy-gates are open wide
To them that mourn their sin,
Oh, shut them not against us, Lord,
But let us enter in.

3 We need not to confess our fault,
For surely Thou canst tell;

What we have done, and what we are,
Thou knowest very well:

4 Wherefore to beg and to intreat,
With tears we come to Thee;
As children that have done amiss
Fall at their father's knee.

5 And need we, then, O Lord, repeat
The blessings which we crave,
When Thou dost know, before we speak,
The thing that we would have?

6 Mercy, O Lord, mercy we seek;
This is the total sum:

For mercy, Lord, is all our prayer,
O let Thy mercy come!

father.-Luke 15, 20.

UST as I am-without one plea,

JUST

But that Thy blood was shed for me, And that Thou bidst me come to thee, O Lamb of God, I come.

2 Just as I am and waiting not To rid my soul of one dark blot: To Thee, whose blood can cleanse each spot,

O Lamb of God, I come.

3 Just as I am-though tossed about,
With many a conflict, many a doubt,
Fightings within, and fears without,
O Lamb of God, I come.

4 Just as I am-poor, wretched, blind;
Sight, riches, healing of the mind,
Yea all I need, in Thee to find,
O Lamb of God, I come.

5 Just as I am-Thou wilt receive,
Wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve:
Because Thy promise I believe,
O Lamb of God, I come.

6 Just as I am-Thy love unknown
Has broken every barrier down;
Now to be Thine, yea, Thine alone,
O Lamb of God, I come.

not be ashamed.-Ps. 25, 2.
PPREST with sin and woe,
A burdened heart I bear;
Opposed by many a mighty foe,
But I will not despair.

With this polluted heart,
I dare to come to Thee,

Holy and mighty as Thou art,
For Thou wilt pardon me.

I feel that I am weak,

And prone to every sin:

But Thou, who giv'st to those who

seek,

Wilt give me strength within.

4

I need not fear my foes,

I need not yield to care,

I need not sink beneath my woes,
For Thou wilt answer prayer.

5 In my Redeemer's name,

I give myself to Thee;

Through Him, unworthy as I am,
My God will cherish me.

388 Lead me to the rock that is higher

than I.-Ps. 61, 2.

OCK of ages,cleft for me,

[ocr errors]

Let me hide myself in Thee!
Let the water and the blood,

From Thy wounded side which flowed,
Be of sin the double cure,

Cleanse me from its guilt and power.
2 Not the labour of my hands
Can fulfil Thy law's demands;
Could my zeal no respite know,
Could my tears for ever flow,
All for sín could not atone:
Thou must save, and Thou alone.
3 Nothing in my hand I bring,
Simply to Thy cross I cling;
Naked, come to Thee for dress,
Helpless, look to Thee for grace:
Black, I to the fountain fly,
Wash me, Saviour, or I die!

4 While I draw this fleeting breath,
When my eye-lids close in death,
When I soar to worlds unknown,
See Thee on Thy judgment-throne,
Rock of ages, shelter me!

Let me hide myself in Thee!

389 To lay hold upon the hope set

before us.-Heb. 6, 18.

1 JESUS lover of my soul,

Let me to Thy bosom fly,
While the nearer waters roll,
While the tempest still is high;
Hide me, O my Saviour, hide,
Till the storm of life is past:
Safe into the haven guide:
O receive my soul at last!

2 Other refuge have I none;
Hangs my helpless soul on Thee;
Leave, ah! leave me not alone,
Still support and comfort me.
All my trust on Thee is staid;
All my help from Thee I bring;
Cover my defenceless head
With the shadow of Thy wing.
3 Thou, O Christ, art all I want;
More than all in Thee I find:
Raise the fallen, cheer the faint,
Heal the sick and lead the blind:
Just and holy is Thy name,

I am all

unrighteousness; Vile, and full of sin, I am,

Thou art full of truth and grace.
4 Plenteous grace with Thee is found,
Grace to pardon all my sin;

Let the healing streams abound,
Make and keep me pure within:
Thou of life the fountain art,
Freely let me take of Thee:
Spring Thou up within my heart,
Rise, to all eternity!

8.8.6.

390 They shall look on Him whom they

pierced.-John 19, 37.

1THOU who hast redeemed of old, And bidst me of Thy strength lay hold,

And be at peace with Thee;

Help me Thy benefits to own,

And make me know what Thou hast
O dying Lamb, for me!

2 Vouchsafe the eye of faith to see
The Man transfixed on Calvary,

To know Thee, who Thou art,-
The one eternal God and true!
And let the sight affect, subdue,
And break my stubborn heart.
3 Lover of souls, to rescue mine,
Reveal the charity divine,

That suffered in my stead;
That made Thy soul a sacrifice

[done,

[eyes,

And closed in death those gracious

And bowed that sacred head.
