XXIX.-Minutes of the Common Council.

1723. Friday October 25.

Survey of Corporation lands. Ordered that an Exact Survey be made of all the lands belonging to this Corporacion or in which

they have any interest and also that account be taken of the Buttings and boundings thereof and of all the Houses also And to be entred in a Book to be provided for that purpose And that Mr Mayor, Mr Alderman Barke, Mr Alderman Greene, Mr Alderman Pennell, 5 Mr Alderman Burden, Mr George Firth, Mr James Huthwaite, Mr John Huthwaite Shall be a Committee to agree with a Surveyor and other proper persons for the doing thereof. 3483 fo. 4.

The White Rents.-Ordered that the houses at the bottom of Hungate called the White Rents be divided into three parts And 10 that one be allotted to the parish of St Mary another to the parish of St Peter and the third to the parish of St Nicholas within this Town to hold in severalty for the use of the said respective parishes. 3483 fo. 4.

1723-24. February 27

Inquiry as to the destruction of papers by the fire at Mr Morris'.— 15 Ordered that the Hall be resolved into a Comittee to inquire what Records grants papers Books and Memorandums belonging to this Corporacon were consumed by the fire which lately happened in Mr Morris his Study And to regulate all Such matters and things. as are wanting and out of order thereby And to make their Report 20 to the Hall from time to time And that any three of them may act whereof the Mayor or one of the Aldermen to be one. 3483 fo. 7.

1724. Tuesday March 31.

The Duke of Kingston to be formally thanked for favours to the Corporation. Ordered that Mr Mayor and his brethren and Mr Sweetaple do wait on his Grace the Duke of Kingston as Soon as he 25 shall come into the Country to return him thanks for all his favours to this Corporacion and particularly for opposing the passing of a Grant for a Fair at Derby in prejudice of St Mathew fair held at this town. 3483 fo. Jews Lane to be paved.—Ordered that the Chamberlains do forth30 with get the lane called Jews lane between Castlegate and Hungate paved at the Charge of the Corporacion. 3483 fo. Sa.

The Common near the Bowling Alley to be enclosed.-Ordered

St. Matthew's day is September 21. The fair was granted in 1688 to be held on 'the feast of Saint Matthew the Apostle

and for seven days immediately following the said feast.' See Borough Records, vol. v., p. 81.

That the Common near the Bowling alley house1 be inclosed and to that end that a Ring fence be forthwith made round about So much thereof as is intended to be inclosed And that Mr Mayor and his Brethren and the rest of the Gentlemen of the Hall be a Comittee to see the same done Any five whereof to constitute such Comittee 5 whereof the Mayor to be one And it is further ordered that the profit and advantage which from time to time shall be made of the ground to be inclosed as aforesaid Shall be imployed toward the maintenance of the poor of this town or for Some other publick use.

3483 fo. 8a. 10 Provision of Fire Engines, etc.-Ordered that seven Hand Ingines and twelve Leathern Bucketts be forthwith bought for extinguishing fires which may happen in this town And that the Mayor and his brethren Shall have the Keeping of the said Ingines each of them one And that the Bucketts be kept in the Hall and that the Cham- 15 berlains do pay for the Said Ingines and Bucketts.

Sale of Corporation property in London.-Ordered That Mr Mayor do write to Mr Launder forthwith to sell the houses at Puddle Dock London for 120 Guineas if he can get So much and not less than £120. 3483 fo. 10. 20

1724. Wednesday April 22.

Licences for Alehouses. It is this day agreed by the Mayor Aldermen and other Members of this Hall in Common Council assembled That from henceforth The Mayor and Aldermen shall not grant a Licence to any person for Keeping a Common Alehouse (not being a Burgess of this town) untill such person shall pay the 25 Sume of twenty pounds to the Chamberlains for the use of this Corporacion. 3483 fo. The New Hall.—Mr Mayor Mr Aldermen Pennell and Mr Morris are hereby deputed to go to Rufford to a meeting of the Justices of the Peace and Gentlemen of the County of Nottingham on Fryday 30 next to treat with them about building a Hall as well for the use of this Town as for the County of Nottingham And Mr Plumptre and

Mr Bennett are hereby desired to assist at the said Treaty on the behalf of this Corporacion And the said Deputies are hereby invested with a Discretionary power to agree with the said Justices and Gentlemen of the said County of Nottingham on Such terms as to 5 them shall seem reasonable and fit in the matter aforesaid.

The disposal of rubbish.-Ordered That leave be given to John Plumptre Esq. to lay the Rammell which he shall have occacion to carry out of town in the Sheep Skin pool near the Leen Bridge.

Sale of Corporation property in London.--Memorandum That this day the Common Seal of this Corporacion was affixed to an Indenture of Lease and an Indenture of Release bearing date respectively the 29th and 30th days of May last past And also to an Indenture of 15 Bargain and Sale bearing date the said 30th day of May All of them made or mencioned to be made Between the Mayor and Burgesses of this town of Nottingham of the one part and Charles King of the parish of St Anne's Black Fryers London of the other part purporting the absolute Sale Of a piece or parcell of Ground 20 Whereon three Brick Messuages now stand or lately stood mencioned to have been in the severall tenures of Robert Evans, Anne Robinson, and Joseph Peering, Scituate Lying and being in the parish of St Andrew Wardrobe London with the appurtenances to the said Charles King in consideracion of the sume of £126 Con25 sideracion money And that this day also the said Indenture of Bargain and Sale was acknowledged by this Hall before Henry Morris one of the Masters in Chancery extraordinary in order to be inrolled. These were part of the School lands.1 3483 fo. 14a.

1724. Friday July 31.

Payment towards Paving.-Ordered that the Chamberlains do pay 30 to the Overseers of the Highways of the parish of St Maries £20 towards paveing the said Highways in Swine Green, Hockley and Goosegate.

1724. Friday September 11.

Lease of a house at Trent Bridge.-Ordered That a Little house at the Trent Bridge next to the Trent formerly part of Far Trent Bridge Warehouse be let to Samuel Owen Junior at the rent of Forty shillings per annum at the pleasure of this Corporacion And he having been in possession of the said house for a year and more 5 preceeding Lady day last He is ordered to pay 40/- for a years rent then due. 3483 fo. 19a.

Grant to Charity School.-Ordered that this Corporacion do pay £5 in arrear to the Charity School and £5 a year for the future during pleasure provided this Corporacion may have the priviledge of 10 Nominating a Boy and a Girl yearly into the said School.

XXX.-Sessions Record Books.

1724. Monday June 1.

Whereas an Order was made at the General Quarter Sessions of the Peace held for this Town and County of the Town of Nottingham the seventeenth day of January 1722 relating to the Highways 15 within the Parish of St Mary in this Town Which Order was Burnt and destroyed by the Fire which happened in the Office or Study1 of Henry Morris the Town Clerk in the Night between the Seventh and eighth days of February last but a Copy of the said Order being in the Hands of the Surveyors of the said Highways It is therefore 20 ordered by this Court that the same shall be entered of Record in the Court and that the same shall be of the same force and effect as the original Order Was. And to be observed in all things as the same should or ought to be. The Tenour of which Order followeth in these Words vizt. Villa Nottinghamia scilicet. Ad generalem 25 quartialem Sessionem pacis domini Regis tentam per Adjornamentum in et pro Villa et Comitatu Villa Nottinghamiæ prædictæ apud Guihaldem ejusdem Villa Coram Thomas Trigge Armigero Majore Ville illius Benjamino Greene et. Alexandro Burden generosis Aldermannis dictae ville justiciariis dicti domini Regis ad pacem in 30 Villa et Comitatu Villa Nottinghamiæ prædicta conservandam
