XXIII.-Minutes of the Common Council.

Owing to the fire at the Town Clerk's office many of the Hall Books and other papers were destroyed. To this is due the fact that many of the following extracts are undated and that but few documents remain in a perfect condition.

1719.

The Free School.-Whereas William Smeaton was about the 5 eleventh day of August last nominated elected and chosen Schoolmaster of the Free School of Nottingham which place he hath lately resigned we the Mayor Aldermen and Common Council of the said town of Nottingham and the Guardians of the said free School we whose names are hereto Subscribed pur- 10 suant to the power and authority vested in and by the Institucion of the Founder of the said free School or otherwise howsoever Do hereby nominate and elect conduct and hire William Saunders of the same town to be Schoolmaster of the Said Free School at and for the yearly Salary of twenty marks And we do hereby invest the 15 said William Sanders with the like perquisites profits tenements and hereditaments as any of the preceeding Schoolmasters of the said free-school of right had or used or were used to have To have hold take and Enjoy the [ ] as he shall well behave himself in the [ Jlace and well and faithfully perform his duties George Firth and William Shepheard Schoolwardens

to be under the Usher they being only in Æsops Fables Corderius1 30 and such like books. And that they did not find the said Master in

Corderius was the latinized form and name used by Mathurin Cordier (c. 14801564), a French schoolmaster. He taught Calvin among his other pupils in Paris.

His most famous book is 'Colloquia (Colloquiorum scholasticorum libri quatuor)' the one probably in use at the Free-school.

the said School when they visited it which was in School hours and find that he seldom comes into the said School And therefore have thought fit to draw up Articles Against the said Johnson which they now Exhibit in this Hall and are as follows vizt [

]fs Articles 5 exhibited to the Mayor Aldermen and Common Councill of the town of Nottingham And to the Schoolwardens of the Free School of the same town against Mr Richard Johnson Clerk Schoolmaster or pretended School Master of the said Free School this third day of November 1719.

That the said Richard Johnson hath for seven yeares last past very much omitted and neglected his duty in the said law and Office of Schoolmaster whereby the said School is Come to ruin and decay there having been scarce any Scollars in the Same especially under his tuition these two yeares last past.

That the said Richard Johnson hath refused and neglected to teach and instruct the Sons of the Burgesses of the said town of Nottingham as he ought to have done contrary to his duty according to the institucion of the founder of the said School by reason whereof the parents of those children have been obliged to remove them from 20 under his Care and send them to other Schools out of the town. That the said Richard Johnson for the space of [ en months and upwards hath been delirious and..

Sale of Ale-Ordered that no person do sell Ale within this town without a Licence from the Mayor and brethren So to do 25 And that henceforth no Licence to Sell Ale within this town be granted to any person who is not a Burgess of this town. 1

Now we the Mayor Aldermen and Common Council of the said town of Nottingham and Guardians of the said Free-School by vertue of and pursuant to the power and authority vested in us in and by the institution of the founder of the said Free School or otherwise

howsoever Do choose nominate and conduct and hire the said Thomas Miles to be Schoolmaster of the said Free School at and for the yearly Salary of forty pounds and do hereby invest him the said Thomas Miles with all the perquisites profits comodities and emoluments of the said Office and place of Schoolmaster belonging to and 5 appertaining as any of the preceeding Schoolmasters of the said Free School of right had or used or were accustomed to have And it is hereby ordered that [ ] and after the death of Richard Johnson Clerk late Schoolmaster of the said Free-school The said Thomas Miles Should be increased and made fifty pounds a year.

Whereas on or about the first of M[ J William Sanders was nominated and elected Schoolmaster of the Free School of this town of Nottingham Which was done only to try the title to the School and Schoolhouse then in question. 15 But that matter being determined It is now resolved that the said William Sanders shall be displaced and removed from the said place and office of School-master and he is hereby removed and displaced accordingly and the said William Sanders doth hereby Surrender and resign the Office and place of Schoolmaster of the 20 said School And doth hereby release and disclaim all his right and title thereto And in testimony thereof hath Subscribed his

name.

Present to the Duchess of Newcastle.-Ordered that a present of one Dozen Sugar loaves be made to the Duchess of Newcastle by this Corporacion as Mrs Mayoress shall think fit to give to her Grace and the Wifes of Aldermen Counsellers and Cloathing men are ordered to attend Mrs Mayoress when she makes her said visit.

The Free School. This day the common Seal of this Corporacion was affixed to a Certificate to his Grace the Arch Bishopp of York to signify that this Corporacion had on the 20th day of August last past elected John Womack Bachelour of Arts to be 35 School master of the Free School of this town.1 3482 fo. 13.

It appears that Richard Johnson was still in actual possession of the house and

mastership of the Free School.
