Received then of Mr Rippon Chamberlain ye Sume of thirty Shillings being ye Charity of Mr Robinson to be distributed in bread to ye Poor of St Peters Nottingham.2

Loan of Town Plate.-Whereas this Corporacion has suffered heretofore very much by lending the Towns Pewter and other 15 Goods To prevent which for the future Itt is hereby ordered That the present Mayor nor no other Mayor for the time being do lend the said Pewter or other Goods to any person whatsoever where the Corporacion are not concerned in the Dinner or Entertainment : And in case they or any of them doe so lend the same or any part 20 thereof That such Mayor be answerable for any Losse or Damage which may happen thereby.

The Charity School.-Upon Applicacion made to this Corporacion by Mr Jenner and Mr Clarke touching the setting up and founding

a Charity School1 in the Towne of Nottingham for the bringing up and Educating of poor Children and upon their Mocion for this Corporacion to encourage the same. The question being putt what shall be paid by the Chamberlains for that purpose Itt was carryed That the Chamberlains for the time being doe allow five 5 pounds per Annum to be paid as other subscripcions are during pleasure. 3473 fo. 6a.

1706. Thursday December 19.

Whereas her Majesty has appointed a Day of Thanksgiving to be observed throughout England on Tuesday the 31st of this Instant December for the Glorious Successes of the last Campaign This Corporacion think themselves obliged to Celebrate the same in this manner vizt. The Mayor, Aldermen, Common Councell and Cloathing to go in the Morning to St Maryes Church in their Formalityes to hear the Sermon to be preached there on that Occasion and from Church to go to Mr Chamberlain Lambs to Dinner and 15 there drink her Majestys Health &c. In order to which Itt is hereby ordered That this Corporacion do allow five pounds for the Entertainment abovesaid.

The Free School.-Memorandum this day upon this Corporacions receiving a Letter from his Grace the Archbishopp of 20 York and other persons Recommending one Mr Richard Johnson to be Head-Schoolmaster of this Town in the place of Mr Griffith (who is to leave att Ladyday next) The question was putt whether or no This house shall agree with and Acquiesce in his said Lordships Recommendacion and choice Itt was 25 carryed in the Affirmative by the Majority of Votes And itt is hereby ordered That the Thanks of this Corporacion be returned to his Grace the said Archbishopp for his great care and trouble he has been att and the favour he has been pleased to shew herein for the good of this Town in the choice and Recommendacion of a 30 Worthy and Able Schoolmaster.2

1706-7. Wednesday March 12.

Library at Free School.-Ordered that the Schoolwardens doe take care to fitt up a place in the School for the safe keeping of the Bookes designed from time to time to be bought pursuant to the direccions of the Will of late Mr Alderman Parker.1

Ordered that the Schoolwardens doe forthwith distrain of such of the Free School Tennants as refuse to pay their Arreares of Rent in order to raise present money to discharge Mr Griffith of the sallary due to him this last Ladyday itt amounting to £85. 3473 fo. 14.

1707. Wednesday April 16.

Union of England and Scotland.-Memorandum its this day agreed That an Addresse be drawn and sent up to Mr Plumptree in order to be presented to her Majesty to compliment her on the happy conclusion of the Union of the two Kingdomes of England and Scotland.

The question being putt whether any and what money shall be spent of a Treat to-morrow being the Thanksgiving day for the conclusion of the Union of the Kingdoms of England and Scotland Itt was carryed That there be five pounds spent on this Occasion.2 3473 fo. 15.

The Spa by the Leen.-Ordered That this Corporacion doe allow Alderman Watkinson ye summe of £10 towards the charges he has been att in making a convenient Walk to accomodate the WaterDrinkers &c.3 3473 fo. 15.

Ordered that (by reason of John Smith not having the full 25 Pindars Fee during John Ludlams Life) the Chamberlains doe

the present Bowling Green Hotel. This spring was known as the Spa. Lucy Joynes, writing of the years 1798-1800, describes it as "A Spa by the Leen, highly beneficial, a strong chalybeate . . . subsequently rendered inaccessible to the public and destroyed."

provide 35 stoops1 and 25 railes for to make the Fence good att the Long-Hedge but this not to be any Precedent for the Corporacion to repaire the said Fence which is lookt upon to belong to the Pindars or Feild-Keepers.

Dr. Bilby's Charity.-Memorandum this day Dr Bilbey agreed 5 to endow his Charity houses with these Lands following vizt, 3 Tenements in Goose Gate in possession of Henry Hearson, William Clarke and Mathew Hutchinson in manner following to wit to each person a tun of Coales and ye remainder of ye rents to be laid out in repaires. 3473 fo. 19a. 10

1707. Thursday July 31.

New Bridge over the Leen.-Memorandum this day a Wast peice of ground containing 12 yards in Length next to the new Bridge over the Leen into the Holms was lett to Gervase Pilkinton and Bartle Hallam att the rent of 6d per Annum and the same to be entred in the Chamberlains books.

The Recorder.-The Question being putt who shall succeed the late Duke of Devonshire in the Office of Recorder of this Town Itt was carryed That the Right Honourable Marquesse of Dorchester doe succeed him And accordingly he was this day Unanimously chosen Recorder of this Town in the room of the said Duke of 20 Devonshire. 2

Corporation Tolls at Newark.-Memorandum this day a Lease was lett to Mr Thomas Motteram of this Corporacions Tolls at Newarke for Nine Yeares from Michaelmas next att £40 Fine and £20 per annum Rent with usuall Covenants And Mr Motteram 25 to secure the Corporacion from all suits which may happen about the same through his Default.
