Fryday the seaven and twentyeth day of this Instant October by two of the Clocke in the Afternoon of the same day att the Guildhall of the said Town of Nottingham to answer certain Articles then. and there to be exhibited against him and to shew sufficient cause 5 why he should not be then Disfranchised from being a Member or Burgess of this Corporacion of Nottingham and from all the Libertyes and Priviledges thereto belonging And itt is hereby ordered That the present Chamberlaines doe in the name of this Corporacion serve the said Mr Smith with this Order.

Memorandum this day Mr Chamberlain Drury did by order of this Corporacion demand the Charter of Mr Smith which he would not deliver and also he then demanded the Mayor's Booke which the said Mr Smith has and he also refused to deliver the same. And he further demanded the Translacion of the said Charter which he 15 said was not ready or to that effect. And the said Mr Drury then offered him money for the Translacion aforemencioned which he would not accept.

Ordered by the Unanimous Consent of this house That a Writt be sent for the next Post against Mr Alderman Smith att the suite 20 of the Mayor and Burgesses of Nottingham for his detaining this Corporacion's Charter and other Books and Records etc.

Whereas Mr Alderman Smith was by an order of this house made the last Hall-day duly summoned to appear before this house att the time and place in the said Order mencioned to answer certain Articles and to shew cause why he the said Mr Smith should not be Disfranchised from being a Burgess of this Corporacion. And whereas severall Articles have been this day offered and agreed upon by this house and were ready to be offered to the said Mr Smith 30 for him to make Answer unto in case he had this day appeared but by reason he hath in contempt of the Mayor's summons neglected to give his Appearance att this Hall not having any sufficient cause for such Neglect Itt is therefore ordered by the unanimous Consent of this house That the said Mr Alderman Smith be once more 35 peremptorily summoned to appear before this house upon Thursday, the second day of November next by two of the Clocke in the Afternoon of the same day att the Guildhall of the said Town of

Nottingham to answer the Articles above-mencioned and then and there to shew sufficient cause (if he can) why he should not be then Disfranchised from being a Member and Burgesse of this Corporacion pursuant to the former Order. And itt is further ordered That the present Chamberlains do serve the said Mr Smith with this Order. 5 3471 fo. 8.

1704. Monday October 30.

Itt is this day ordered by the Mayor and Burgesses of this Town in Councell assembled That the Charter or Letters Patents of this Corporacion now or late in the custody of Samuel Smith Gentleman one of the Aldermen of the said Town be by him the said 10 Samuel Smith delivered to William Drury and Robert Brentnall Gentlemen the present Chamberlaines of this Town or to either of them for the use of the said Mayor and Burgesses. And they the said William Drury and Robert Brentnall are hereby desired impowered and authorized to go to the said Samuel Smith and in the 15 name of the said Mayor and Burgesses to demand ask and receive of the said Samuell Smith the said Charter or Letters Patents. And the said Samuel Smith is hereby desired and required to deliver the said Charter or Letters Patent to the said William Drury and Robert Brentnall or one of them. And this shall be his, the said Samuel 20 Smith's sufficient discharge for the same.

Memorandum upon serving Mr Alderman Smith with a Copy of the Order above he delivered to Mr Drury the Corporacion's Charter and a paper Draught which he said was the translacion thereof and also his Mayor's Booke all which were laid up in the Hall. 3471 fo. 9.

Ordered that the Chamberlains doc forthwith take care to send up to this Corporacions Representatives in Parliament to each of them halfe a hogshead of good Ale pursuant to the old Custome. 3471 fo. 12. 30

1704-5. Wednesday March 14.

Whereas Mr William Mabbatt a Burgesse of this Corporation by a Note in Writing under his hand attested by Witnesses has declared his full and free consent to be Disfranchised from being a Burgesse of the same Corporacion in order to qualifye himselfe

for an Evidence in a Cause to be tryed the next Assizes between Francis Ward Plaintiffs and the Mayor and Burgesses of the said Town Defendants wherein the Rights and Libertyes of this Corporacion are concerned Itt is therefore fully agreed that 5 the said Mr William Mabbatt be from henceforth Disfranchized from being a Member or Burgesse of this Corporacion and from all the Rights and Priviledges of the Same and he is hereby Disfranchized accordingly. 3471 fo. 17.

1705. Thursday May 24.

Ordered that Nathaniel Recklesse be proceeded against ye 10 next Assizes for Imposing upon this Corporacion by bringing in a person to be made a Burgesse2 as being his Apprentice when he was 3471 fo. 21.

1705. Saturday June 16.

Schoolwardens.-Memorandum this day Mr William Bilby and Mr Lionel Lamb were duely and unanimously Elected Schoolwardens 15 for the Yeare next ensuing And itt is hereby ordered that the Schoolwardens for the time to come shall be allowed twenty shillings per Annum besides the allowance for their Horses.

1705. Tuesday June 26.

The Free School.-The Question being putt whether or no Mr 20 Griffith shall have his Sallary continued by reason there is a Visible decay in his Schools and he refuses to leave the same Itt was carryed in the Negative by the Majority of Votes.

And itt is hereby ordered That the Schoolwardens for the time to come do not pay or allow the said Mr Griffith the Head25 schoolmaster any Sallary till further Order. 3471 fo. 24.

Market Place. The Question being put whether or no the Toll House or Engine house be pulled down for the better Ornament of the Markett place and the Wall repaired and the Toll house built in another place. Itt was carryed in the Affirmative by the 30 Majority of Votes And itt is hereby ordered that the same be

Fairlady Closes.-Ordered that Mrs Frances Fothergill have the Burgesse parte lying in Fairlady Closes which Mrs Oldham lately had att the old rent 12d paid in earnest by Dominus Bilby 10 Bridgeland. 3471 fo. 27.

Field Reeves.-Memorandum this day Mr Armstrong Mr Francis Smith and Mr Thomas White were unanimously chosen Feild Reeves for the Yeare ensuing.

Corporation Property in London.-Ordered That this Corpora- 15 cions houses in London be sold and disposed of by Mr Robie Sherwin for the best price he can gett for the same And he is hereby empowered to sell and dispose of the said Houses accordingly.2 3471 fo. 30.

Bilby's Almshouses.-Memorandum this day this Corporacion 20 sold Dominus Bilby a peice of Wast ground over against the Plow in consideration of 6d upon Condicion he do within a yeare build 6 or more Almshouses for 6 or more poor Widdows to dwell in and sette Lands sufficient to repaire them and to allow each Widdow 2d per Weeke and so as after his death he lett ye Corporacion have the 25 Government of the same. 3471 fo. 30.

Memorandum this day a Lease for 500 yeares was sealed to

Deering (p. 153) says these houses were in Coalpit lane. An illustration of this hospital as it was in 1750 will be found in his History. In Deering's time Coalpit Lane ran from Goose Gate or Hockley to the end of Broad Lane-now Broad Street, but about 18co the upper
