Mr Mather Chamberlain Pray pay to Thomas Officer and 10 Francis Richards Two Pounds Two Shillings for inspecting into the State of the Distemper amongst the horned Cattle for three Weeks last and place it to Account.1

1748. June 6. We present as follows:

John Deveral Butcher for Curseing the Corporation in the 20 following Prophane words, The Devil Damn all the Corporation : and the Devil blow them up with Gunpowder.

Samuel Fowles for abuseing Joseph Nall and Calling him a Barberous Murthering Villian because he served his Majesty in the Light Horse in Scotland.2

Another like payment was made on 16 December, 1747.

I August 1748 We present Thomas Cooper Frameworkknitter lives at the Bull in Narrow Marsh for Assaulting and with a Gossbill in his hand threatning the life of a Constable in the Execution of his Office.

The following entry occurs after the formal notice of the election of the Mayor

William Trigge Gentleman Alderman duly elected Mayor. Mr Alderman Thomas Trigge protested against the Voting for Mr 25 Alderman William Trigge as irregular.

Election of Chamberlains.-Be it Remembered That William Trigge Esquire the Mayor Elect for the year from henceforth now next Ensuing in and for the Town of Nottingham and the County of the same Town immediately after such his Election according to Antient Use and Custom Did Nominate John Egginton Gentleman and 5 Humphrey Cox Gentleman as two fit Persons to be chosen Sheriffs and likewise Samuel Wright Gentleman and Samuel Milner Gentleman as two fit Persons to be Chosen Chamberlains immediately of and for the Said Town of Nottingham and the County of the Same Town for the same Ensuing Year. Which two Chamberlains were 10 voted against by divers of the Electors; and Mr Jonathan Dodson and Mr Samuel Need were chosen Chamberlains in opposition to the Gentlemen nominated by the said Mayor Elect.

The Bridgemasters.—This Hall do now Unanimously chuse and appoint Mr Joseph Finch and Mr Richard Harrison Two Freemen of 20 this Corporation to be Bridgmasters for the ensuing year And it is ordered that the Bridgmasters for the future do not expend in any extraordinary work the Sum of Forty Shillings without having first an order of this Hall for the same. 3508 fo. 7.

Ordered that John Greene, the Scavenger for the last Year 25 shall not be paid his last Quarters Salary left in the hands of Mr Richard Butler the late Chamberlain untill he hath done the work he undertook as Scavenger 3508 fo. 7.

From Chappel bar to the Malt Cross, cleaned and taken away once a Month, all the Winter Season.

Swept, and taken away once a Fortnight.

To be swept and taken away every Monday and Tuesday.

Clean'd and the Dirt taken away once a
Month.

To be taken away once in Three Weeks,
all the Winter Season-as likewise from
the Change to the Hen Cross.

To be taken away once in a Month and the rest to be thrown up to the Wall as oft and to be taken away Three Times in the Winter Season and once in the Summer.

Swept and carried away once a Fortnight To be cleand up, and taken away once in Six Weeks during the Winter Seasonand that part of Stony Street against the Dead Wall, The same-The other part against the House To be cleaned and taken away once a Month during the Winter Season-The Dirt to be taken away from St. Peters church Wall Twice in the Winter and once in the Summer, if necessary.

Also to clean the Bridge End effectually as far as hath been accustomed.

November the 8th. 1748. Agreed with the Mayor and Burgesses to be Scavenger for a Year from the Eleventh Instant, and to clean the Pavements as above written at the Salary of Forty Five Pounds Witness my Hand

35 for the Year and to be paid Quarterly.

1748. Friday December 2.

Resignation of a Senior Councilman.—Mr. Truman sent to this Hall the following Letter, directed to William Trigge Esq. Mayor of Nottingham.

Eastwood. 1748. November 3.

Sir, I beg the favour you'l please to acquaint the Gentlemen of the Hall that upon Account of my great Age and the Infirmitys 5 attending it makes me uncapable of doing my Duty there as one of the Senior Council men, therefore am desirous that they will accept my Resignation of that office (reserving to myself the office of being one of the Cloathing) and do hereby acknowledge to resign my above mentioned place as a Senior Council Man, and am Sir Your most humble (?) Servant to comand

3508 fo. II. Ordered that Mr Mayor do invite the Corporation this Evening 20 and what Gentlemen of this Town he pleaseth, to drink his Majesties Health this Evening; it being omitted on the Birth day on account of his Majesties absence. 3508 fo. 12.

1748/9. Tuesday January 3.

A Committee of the Mayor and any Five of the Hall and as many more as will be pleased to attend the Mayors Summons are to 25 inspect Mr Richardsons House and Mr Luptons Incroachment by the Leen Side; The Rowel in the Market place, The Stocks and the Arch in the High Road by Panniers Close etc. and make their Report touching the Condition of the same respectively at the next Hall. 3508 fo. 13. 30

Attorney made a freeman.-The Hall agrees to make Mr Robert Seagrave a Freeman on the footing of other Attorneys that have served a Clerkship of Five Years to a Freeman. 3508 fo. 13.
