VI.-Minutes of the Common Council.

1704. Monday October 2.

Debts of Corporation.—Ordered by this house That for the Yeare ensuing all summes of money that shall be received by this Corporacion for the Fines of the Chamberland Bridgeland and School land which shall be lett upon Lease shall be brought into the Hall

This was the usual grant made by the Corporation towards a plate given by the town of Nottingham at the races held on the Forest. Deering (p. 76) writes:'Nottingham is one of the twelve Towns where the King's Guineas are run for, besides other money or plates. These Races are kept in July, the Course which formerly was four Miles round, is at this time but two Miles. It is one of the best in England, and is never out of Order for running be the weather what it will. Here is a fine Valley for Coaches, Chariots, etc. to pass and repass, and for the accomodation of the Nobility and Gentry who come

to the Races. This Nottingham Course could once have vyed with any Course in the Kingdom for a grand appearance of Nobility, neither Newmarket nor BansteadDowns, boast of better Company nor Horses, but since the great Increase of Horse-Races it has rather dwindled, however the late Act of Parliament has been of some Service to it, and there seems a very great likelihood that in a number of years it may recover its former Lustre.'

From the fact that a further grant was made in July of the same year it appears that races were held twice a year.

This entry is somewhat misleading. On September 20th 1703 the Imperialist forces under Stirum were defeated by the French under Villars at Höchstadt. Obviously this cannot be the battle referred to, which must be that better known as the battle of Blenheim, fought on August

13th, 1704. Here Prince Eugene and Marlborough defeated the French under Tallard.

2 On October 1st, 1672, the town waits had ceased to exist as an official body. The above entry refers to the revival of the office.

the said Charter be once more peremptorily demanded of the said Mr Alderman Smith by the present Chamberlaines in the name of this Corporacion and they are hereby also required to serve the said Mr Smith with a true Copy of this order.
