Deputy Recorder made a Burgess.-Resolved unanimously That Taylor White Esquire Deputy Recorder of this Town be Sworn and Admitted a Burgess of this Corporation Gratis 3503 fo. 7. 10 1743. Saturday December 3.

Address to the King. This day The Common Seal was Affix'd to an Address to his Majesty on his safe Arrivall from abroad and the Dukes and on the Victory at Dettingen, on the Princess Louisa's Marriage and the Birth of the Prince of Wales's Son.2

Bridlesmith Gate.-Resolved That Bridlesmithgate shall forthwith 20 be Repaved and laid Round in a handsome manner The freeholders and Inhabitants therein Raising twenty pounds towards the Charges thereof and the Remainder to be born by this Corporation.

3 Early in 1744, the French Minister, Cardinal Tencin, planned an invasion of England, collected a force of 15,000 troops at Dunkirk and secured the co-operation of Charles Edward, son of the Old Pretender. The French fleet was destroyed by storms and the projected expedition was, of necessity, abandoned.

Tithes of Hay.-Richard Dodson took the Tythes of Hay for another year at the same Rent of £35 a year

Resolved that Thomas Birch son of John Birch a Burgess of 5 this Corporation (having some Right to be made a Burgess but not a Clear one) be made a Burgess for the sum of £10 now paid by him to the Chamberlains. 3503 fo. 23.

1744. Monday July 16.

The Old Town Hall to be rebuilt.-Resolved Unanimously that this Old Towns Hall1 is the most Convenient for doing the Common 10 business of this Corporation and therefore that the said Hall shall be Repaired and Rebuilt by this Corporation and as Severall Plans are proposed and delivered in for Approbation It is Resolved that Mr Mayor and the Aldermen and as many of the Hall as will attend be a Comittee to treat with workmen about doing the same to Consist 15 of Seven at least and that they make their Report next Hall day. 3503 fo. 29.

Whereas a Comittee of Seven Members of the Hall or more have met Samuel Barnes and treated with him about building the old Hall and he proposing to bring in a more particular proposall 20 It is Ordered that the said Comittee bargain and agree with the said Samuel Barnes for and concerning the Same 3503 fo. 31.

1744. Friday August 17.

Ordered That the same Comittee who Agreed with Samuel Barnes about Rebuilding the Old Hall be a Comittee to Attend and take off the Records and Repository of this Corporation from the said 25 Hall to Mr Mayor's dwelling house there to lye and remain till the said Hall be rebuilt and a new Repository made. 3503 fo. 36. Disfranchisement of Burgesses.-This day Francis Shears the Elder and Thomas Blasedale Framework knitter both Capitally Convicted for Severall Crimes Were Disfranchized from being Burgesses of this 30 Corporation.

1744. Friday September 7.

Re-enfranchisement of a former burgess.-This Day Thomas Martin appeared and Expressed his Concern for the occasion he gave for his disfranchisement and Desiring to be Restored Burgess again It is Ordered That he the said Thomas Martin be Restored again to his Burgesship and Freedom and he is Restored accordingly.

Resolved that Thomas Holland Gentleman be made a Burgess of this Corporation Gratis and that James Barrett be also made a Burgess tho' his time do not Expire till Saturday next he being to leave the Town before. 3503 fo. 43. 10

Resolved that Sir Henry Harpur Baronet be Presented with his freedom of this Corporation for the Assistance he hath given to the Trade of this Town relating to the Navigation thereof.
